Horace Greeley defeats Byram Hills 9-0 during girls field hockey at Horace Greeley High school in Chappaqua on Sept. 7, 3016.

CHAPPAQUA –  No matter how the rest of the season plays out, Horace Greeley can justifiably say, “Wait till next year.”

The Quakers, a team of all juniors, plus one sophomore, should definitely be stronger next year. But they hardly looked weak Wednesday.

Greeley routed visiting Byram Hills 9-0 in the teams’ season opener.

The Quakers’ defense essentially had the afternoon off. But Lauren Rosh certainly did not. The junior made her varsity debut a memorable one, netting five goals.

Player of the game: Rosh. The first of her five goals came 8:26 into the game with the Quakers already up 2-0 on goals by Sophie Berkowitz and Lauren Neff. Rosh’s last came with just a few seconds on the clock as she backhanded home a rebound after Kathryn Eisenhower kicked away three consecutive shots.

“It’s definitely the perseverance. Our coaches tell us, ‘It’s not over till the goal hits the net,’ ” Rosh said.

“I think coming in all of us had really high energy all day during school. We wanted to come in really strong and work as a team. … I loved how we worked together. I think this was huge for us.”

Turning point: Neither Bobcats goalie played poorly. Starting netminder Serena Feldman had 14 saves and Eisenhower had seven.

Greeley simply was always on the doorstep. It had 15 penalty corners and it took 32 shots.

The tone was set just 4:12 in as Berkowitz scored, assisted by Nikki Potter.

Neff’s goal was scored just 38 seconds later on another Potter assist.

Stat line: Potter, in fact, had a tremendous game. She had two other assists and two goals, one coming with time expired in the first half on a penalty stroke awarded after Feldman made an excellent save off a scramble but illegally covered the ball.

Potter’s other goal came midway through the second half off a corner with Berkowitz getting the assist.

Horace Greeley's Catherine Brennan, left, tries to steal the ball from Byram Hills' Aerin Bacon during Wednesday's game at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua.

Neff also had two assists and Catherine Brennan and Katie Graham one each.

Quotables: Greeley coach Sukhi Sanhu said his team slowed down a couple of times but, overall, he was pleased.

“They covered each other,” he said. “They help each other, talk to each other and stepped up.”

Of the Quakers pushing until the final horn, he said, “We’re not stopping as long as the game is not ended. … The game can change in the last two minutes. … It doesn’t matter what happens. You’ve got to show them your level because, looking from all sides – from the parents, from the fans, and the coaches – you’ve got to look fantastic, like one unit.”

Field hockey recaps from September 16, 2016

Field hockey recaps from September 16, 2016

It was a battle between two very good teams.

But one always had the upper hand.

Always, as in since 2004.

But Wednesday was different.

The Scarsdale field hockey team blanked Mamaroneck, winners of the last two state Class A championships, 4-0, putting the game away with three second-half goals.

The upset came with Scarsdale beginning 2016 after graduating seven starters from a team that went to last year’s Section 1 Class A semifinals.

“I don’t think anyone was expecting this,” nine-year assistant coach Genette Zonghetti said.

“I think it just comes from our girls just playing really hard. This is the hardest I’ve seen a Scarsdale team play in my nine years here.”

It was also, by far, the most goals a Raiders team had netted against the Tigers during that span. Zonghetti guessed the sum total during those nine years might have been three or four.

“Scarsdale played a great game and we just played bad,” said Mamaroneck coach John Savage, whose team was undefeated last year.

Senior Jilly Melhman scored what proved to be the winning goal with about 13 minutes left in the first half off an assist from Theresa Alarcon.

Senor Erin Nicholas made it 2-0, scoring on a breakaway with about eight minutes gone in the second half.

Nicholas scored again off a corner with about 14 minutes left with Emma Coleman getting the assist, and Melhman’s sophomore sister, Lizey, added the fourth goal (assist from Angie Burns) a couple of minutes later.

“I think our backs – Angie and Emma – really played the best games they’ve played in four years with us and Erin Nicholas was exceptional in the midfield,” Zonghetti said.

In fact, Mamaroneck’s usually potent offense was limited to just six shots on net, all of which Raiders goalie Lila Horwood handled.

Mamaroneck’s Katie Rasor had four saves.

Recaps of September 7, 2016 games

Recaps of September 7, 2016 games

Wednesday was a day like no other – at least for not for the past 13 seasons.

Scarsdale upset Mamaroneck, which has won the past two Class A New York State Championship, and did so convincingly, 4-0.

The last time the Raiders topped the Tigers was 2003. (See related story.)

Other games included Horace Greeley’s 9-0 shutdown of Byram Hills. Lauren Rosh was a good part of the story there. Making her first varsity start, she scored five times. (Also, see related story.)

But there were also plenty of other games. Below are their recaps.

Suffern 2, Pearl River 1: Dana Meehan and Sophie Jay scored and Kaity Gannon had an assist in the Mounties’ win. Suffern goalie Alyssa Sanchez had eight saves.

Pearl River’s Megan Foiles scored off an assist from Sarah McNamee.

Pirate goalie Kerry Gettler had two stops.

Bronxville 3, Nyack 2: Hannah Weirens, Mia Bettino and Fiona Jones scored for the Broncos.

Ellie Walsh had two assists and Kat Ungvary one.

Morgan MacCartney and Arielle Rodriguez scored for Nyack.

Nyack goalie Elizabeth Lavendar had three saves. Katie Gordon stopped three shots for Bronxville.

Panas 4, Putnam Valley 1: Panas upped its season mark to 2-0 after trailing 1-0 at the half.

Cyera Daughtry scored Putnam Valley’s lone goal at 21:52 of the first half off a Caleigh Jacobs assist.

But it was pretty much all Panthers in the second half as Lisa Guzzo scored twice and Carlyn Mucci scored and had three assists.

Danielle Merante scored the other Panas goal and also had an assist.

Lauren Turner had 10 saves for Put Valley.

Clarkstown South 5, Nanuet 1: Colleen Geyer scored twice and had two assists and Clare Dooley also scored twice in the Vikings’ win.

Dara Studnitzer also scored and Grace Dempsey and Danielle Noia added ssists for Clarkstown South.

Corrine Berkery registered Nanuet’s goal.

Jenna Franchino had five stops for Nanuet and Miranda Linehan stopped one for Clarkstown South.

Pelham 7, Sleepy Hollow 1: Alissa Manos had a huge day with two goals and five assists and Delia Crotty also had two goals in the Pelicans’ win.

Josephine Galeotafiore scored for the Headless Horsemen, whose goalie, Marissa Fortugno, had 18 saves.

Horace Greeley defeated North Rockland in a boys soccer playoff game at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua Oct. 23, 2015.

This will be the busiest day so far in this young season, and I’ll be heading out to catch a game with plenty of intrigue. Horace Greeley and new coach Camp Shropshire will host league opponent Fox Lane, which will be playing its season-opener. The Quakers started their season with a 9-0 rout of Putnam Valley on Tuesday, showing a deep and versatile offensive attack. The Foxes are also expected to have an explosive offense, led by senior Kristian Shkreli, who returned to the team after playing in the U.S. Academy system last year.

This has the potential to be a high-scoring, exciting game to watch. I’ll have live updates on Twitter and SnapChat (“vzmercogliano” is the username for both), plus game coverage on the blog later this evening.

Here is the full schedule for Thursday, with my picks in bold:

Clarkstown South at Ketcham, 4:15 p.m.
Fox Lane at Horace Greeley, 4:15 p.m.

Familiarity makes for smooth transition at Greeley

CHAPPAQUA – Camp Shropshire is no stranger to the sidelines during Horace Greeley boys soccer games. He was an assistant under Bobby Herodes for the previous four seasons, often serving as a calming force behind a fiery head coach.

With Herodes deciding to retire this offseason, it’s now Shropshire running the show for the Quakers. And while he maintains his quiet, calculated approach, don’t mistake his gentle demeanor for complacency.

“Bobby gets amped up,” said Shropshire, who called Herodes “my one mentor in soccer.”

“He’s very passionate about the boys, and I’m a little bit mellower than him. But the intensity to win, I’d like to think, is still there.”

Greeley has won its first two games under Shropshire, including Thursday’s 3-2 win over league rival Fox Lane. But after dominating possession for much of the first half and early in the second, he made it clear during his postgame speech that he wasn’t happy with how his team finished the game.

“We definitely didn’t go at them the way that we should have,” senior Jack Cohen said. “Coach was talking about it after — the way they just knocked balls at us, and we were back on our heels and just kicking it out. Sometimes that has to happen, but I’m not a huge fan of that game.”

The Quakers lost some key players from last season — most notably Greg Ginsberg, Zander Levitz and leading-scorer Matt Neuberger — but they feel that they have more depth in 2016. And with Shropshire’s familiarity with these players, they’re confident about some of the adjustments that he’s made.

“Herodes liked more of a physical game,” Cohen said. “Camp understands that we’re a tactical team, and it’s also cause last year with Greg and Neuby and Zander, we had a bunch of big guys. We were able to kick the ball up and just body our way through. With this team, it has to be more of a finesse and technical game. Camp is aware of that and he’s done a good job of moving us in that direction.”

Player of the game: Jack Cohen, Horace Greeley — The senior did a little bit of everything. He got the scoring started with a penalty-kick goal in the 34th minute and then dropped back to man-mark Fox Lane’s most dangerous player, Kristian Shkreli, later in the game. Shropshire called him “a coach on the field.”

Turning point: After Shkreli cut Fox Lane’s deficit to 2-1 early in the second half, Johnny Gerstein found Will Seidman in the 55th minute to extend the lead back to two. That insurance goal turned out to be crucial.

Stat line: Horace Greeley (2-0) — Gerstein had a goal and an assist, while Cohen and Seidman also scored. Theodore Rader made four saves and the Quakers took 18 shots. Fox Lane (0-1) — Shkreli scored on an assist from Alex Rivera-Naiera and Miles Levy added a goal in the 75th minute. Preston McKenney made eight saves and the Foxes took 11 shots.

Quotable: “It’s definitely been a smooth transition,” Gerstein said of the coaching change. “Everyone has a certain level of comfort, and they’ve told us to just do our roles. I think that’s why we’ve been playing as a team this year, and that’s something that I think we struggled with a bit last year.”

Corace strong as Mahopac edges Tuskers for Somers title

Mahopac’s Briana Corace tries to tip shot past Somers goalie Jess Monaco during the Somers Tournament final. Mahopac won 2-1 and Corace had two assists.

SOMERS – Mahopac finished what it started last week, leaving the field at Somers High School at dusk Thursday night with a large trophy in hand.

The Indians, who beat Yorktown in last week’s first round of the Somers Tournament, edged the host Tuskers 2-1 in the final to capture the title.

“It’s like a little preview of what we can bring this season,” said senior Briana Corace, who starred both defensively and offensively.

It might have been a mini-tournament with just two other teams – Pawling broke a 1-1 tie in the second half en route to a 3-1 win over Yorktown in Thursday’s consolation game (see related story) – but the quality of play was high.

That was true of both games but especially in the Mahopac-Somers nail-biter that was full of near-misses and some second guesses.

Player of the game: One thing not in doubt Corace’s play.

Corace recorded the assist off a corner with 13:24 left in the first half as Dominique Milian tallied the game’s first score.

Corace also had the assist on what would prove to be the winning goal after her hard run with the ball to the Somers net got the penalty corner call that led to it.

But first Somers provided its own rush, taking the ball at midfield to open the second half and scoring with just 18 seconds expired in the half.

The Tusker rush involved not just speed but three hard, on-the-stick passes.

Teagan Lucchese got the goal and Emma Kittredge the assist.

Turning point: But Somers’ momentum disappeared within seconds – 39 seconds to be exact.

Kim Brower, who had four goals in the Indians’ win over Yorktown, jammed the ball in with 29:03 left, beating Somers goalie Jess Monaco to it. Monaco had made a save on a Corace shot and was just about to kick the ball away when the speedy Brower swooped in.

Somers had multiple chances to tie, though.

Mahopac keeper Gianna Brigante, who played the second half, charged out to kick the ball away with about 19 minutes remaining with Tusker Michelle Croen right on the doorstep.

And Taylor Turchick, who hustled throughout the game and did everything offensively for the Tuskers except score, sent a shot just wide of the goal with 5:44 left.

But Tusker coach Jamie Pryschlak, who was already annoyed after a foul wasn’t called after she believed one of her players was deliberately taken down, became more incensed with two minutes to play, contending her team should have been awarded a penalty stroke.

Brigante made a great save on Mary Mollaghan’s chance to Brigante’s left at the goal line but  the keeper momentarily fell on the ball. Unlike with pucks in ice hockey, field hockey goalies may not cover the ball.

But no cover was called.

“It was tough,” Mollaghan later said, appearing to comment on both the non-call and game.

Mahopac breaks from second-half huddle timeout.

Mahopac breaks from second-half huddle timeout.

Stat line: Brigante and Mahopac’s first-half goalie, Shannon Barry, both had three saves.

Monaco had four saves for Somers.

Mahopac had five penalty corners and Somers had two.

Quotables: “I liked how fast-paced we were in the second half. We had more shots and it was a good faster-paced game,” said Corace, who added, “Just winning this tournament gives us a lot of motivation (for the rest of the season).

Pryschlak lamented Yorktown’s quick second goal but said, “I think the team played a much stronger second half and there was better communication.”

“Mahopac always is good. To compete with them is really nice,” she added.

SOMERS – Pawling, the defending Somers Tournament champion, would have liked to have played later Thursday.

That’s when this year’s tournament final was held.

But the young Tigers looked much improved from last week as they defeated Yorktown 3-1 in the tourney’s consolation contest.

The same could be said for Yorktown, which kept Pawling off the scoreboard until 27 minutes were left in the second half.

That’s when Carly McGrath scored off an assist from Ava Panzer

Yorktown tied it about nine minutes later on Katie Vogel’s unassisted goal.

But the game turned on the Tigers’ ability to cash in on its penalty corners and Yorktown’s inability to do the same.

Yotkown’s defense made a huge stop off a penalty corner shot with 9:23 to go but the rebound came out to Courtney Adams. She hammered home what proved to be the winning goal.

Panzar got the assist.

The penalty corner followed Tiger Sam Smith’s interception of a Yorktown pass.

But Pawling wasn’t through. At 6:52, Frankie Fleming showed off her hand-eye coordination. Off another corner, she batted in a deflected ball that was high over her head.

Yorktown goalie Olivia Sanchez (four saves) had no chance on the play.

Sarah Campbell was credited with the assist.

“Corners can make or break a game,” Yorktown coach Bernadette Gannon said. “We had our corners and they could have been used to capitalize.”

Yorktown's Katie Vogel carries the ball up the field against Pawling.

Instead, Yorktown developed little offense out of its eight corners. Pawling had only three corners, cashing in the two times.

Pawling goalie Lauren Sullivan had six saves.

Pawling also received a strong defensive effort from Adams, who stopped a one-on-one midway through the second half, and from Isabela Santiago, who came up big on corners.

Pawling coach June Lagan said her team still has a long way to go. But she was pleased with Thursday’s effort.

“The kids came out to play today,” she said. “We were finally able to get it together.”

Other games from Thursday

Briarcliff 3, Rye Neck 1: Emma Diller, Teresa Marinaccio and Devon Litchfield scored for the Bears.

Marinaccio, Aleena Hussain and Sophia Gelard had assists.

Nyack 3, Harrison 0: Jenna Dangler, Ava Dobbelear and Dani Lydecker scored and Elizabeth Lavender had five saves for the Indians.

Nellie Fisher, who got strong defensive support, also had five saves for Harrison.

Pleasantville 1, North Salem 1: Lexi Moskowitz scored for Pleasantville and Mariana Alpizar scored for North Salem.

Katie Keane assisted on Moskowitz’s goal.

The Panthers’ Jackie Bendeson made four saves, none bigger than the penalty stroke she stopped with 28:08 remaining.

Olivia DeSanto had three saves for North Salem.

Croton 5, Putnam Valley 0: The Tigers-vs.-Tigers battle went to the more southern Tigers as Maggie Dymes and Teagan Burke both scored twice and Emily Morrison added another goal.

Morrison had two assists and Victoria Lewis one.

Croton scored four goals in the second half.

Putnam Valley netminder Lauren Turner turned away eight shots. Croton goalie Maddy Camillieri had three saves.

Edgemont 2, Hastings 0:  Emma Lampert scored off a first-half corner and Peyton Welker found the net on a second-half breakaway.

Clarkstown South’s Kyle Samuels (4) is tackled by Clarkstown North defensive back Brian Fuller (44) in the first half of their football game at Clarkstown North High School in New City on Friday, September 02, 2016. Clarkstown South won 14-13 taking the supervisors trophy.

Week 2 lohud football rankings

1. Stepinac (0-0) — The Crusaders were idle last week after starting their season a week behind the public schools. They’ll face one of the region’s best Friday night when they host Section 9 Cornwall, but the Green Dragons struggled in a 40-27 loss to Middletown in their opener. Stepinac is another step up in competition.

2016 preseason rankings: Stepinac begins where it ended — No. 1 again

2015 rankings: Defending champs open atop preseason football rankings

2. New Rochelle (1-0) — Although the Huguenots had a few issues in a 34-13 season-opening win over North Rockland, they are going to be all sorts of trouble for Class AA foes by season’s end. Their top-end talent matches up with any team in the area. The scariest part is most of New Rochelle’s stars are sophomores and juniors.

Week 1 rewind: Romeo Holden begins New Rochelle’s season in a hurry

3. John Jay-East Fishkill (1-0) — Any questions about how strong John Jay would be without departed QB Ryan Schumacher were answered quickly against Ossining. The Patriots rolled up 33 points in the first half of their 46-20 win at Ossining. They’re going to be fine.

4. Iona Prep (0-0) — Iona Prep was idle last week, but the Gaels have a major test this week on the road at Brunswick, one of the tri-state’s best non-public schools (not including the Jersey schools, of course). Their skill players should be OK, but the Gaels must prove they can withstand the physical test and come away from the game healthy for Stepinac.

5. Rye (1-0) — Forget about Harrison’s result last week. Rye would enter this week as a formidable opponent for anyone after its 42-7 rout at Beacon. The Garnets are loaded at the skill positions and will be the heavy favorite for the 87th playing of “The Game.”

6. Somers (1-0) — Messiah Horne and the stable of backs behind him had a huge opening week, but watch out for quarterback Kevin Olifers. The junior has a year of experience behind him and opened up with an efficient 7-for-10, 130-yard, two-touchdown day. He could be a difference-maker all season for the Tuskers, who host Sleepy Hollow Friday night in their home opener.

7. Yorktown (1-0) — Brett Makar’s debut as the starting running back was both notable and productive, but Yorktown was pretty good throughout its lineup in Friday’s win at John Jay. Both the defense and special teams had special moments. Already, the Huskers’ Week 3 clash with Somers looms as a marquee Class A game.

Week 1 rewind:Brett Makar sparks complete Yorktown effort

8. Ketcham (1-0) — Several opposing coaches had spread the buzz about Ketcham and the Indians more than lived up to it, rolling past Mahopac 40-23. The key for Ketcham will be consistency, the lack of which has doomed a few promising seasons in recent years.

9. Scarsdale (1-0) — The Raiders probably had the surprise result of the week in Section 1 — even if they won. Mount Vernon gave them everything they could handle, but Scarsdale ultimately secured a 28-26 victory. If the Raiders took the Knights likely at all, they shouldn’t have to worry about a repeat against rival Mamaroneck. The game will have plenty of meaning for the schools.

10. Clarkstown South (1-0) — Like Scarsdale, South received some rave preseason reviews but it had to squeak out a close victory in Week 1. The Vikings will need a better offensive effort against North Rockland, which appeared better than the score would indicate in a three-touchdown loss to New Rochelle.

Week 1 rewind: Tagaris’ leg lifts Clarkstown South in thrilling win

On the bubble: Brewster (1-0), Arlington (1-0).

Class AA — 1. New Rochelle, 2. John Jay-East Fishkill, 3. Scarsdale, 4. Clarkstown South, 5. Ketcham, 6. Arlington, 7. Spring Valley, 8. North Rockland, 9. Clarkstown North, 10. Carmel.

Class A — 1. Rye, 2. Somers, 3. Yorktown, 4. Brewster, 5. Lourdes, 6. Pearl River, 7. Sleepy Hollow, 8. Eastchester, 9. Hen Hud, 10. Tappan Zee.

Class B — 1. Westlake, 2. Nanuet, 3. Pleasantville, 4. Ardsley, 5. Valhalla.

Class C/D — 1. Woodlands, 2. Rye Neck, 3. Dobbs Ferry, 4. Bronxville, 5. Tuckahoe.

Catholic/Private — 1. Stepinac, 2. Iona Prep, 3. Rye Country Day, 4. Hackley, 5. Kennedy.

Harrison tries to rebound against a formidable foe: Rye

Harrison coach Dom Zanot talks to his players during a 34-6 defeat at Rye High School in the Class A playoffs on Oct. 17, 2015.

Harrison coach Dom Zanot talks to his players during a 34-6 defeat at Rye High School in the Class A playoffs on Oct. 17, 2015.

With a victory this Saturday, Rye can draw even in its all-time series with Harrison for the first time since 1974. The teams had actually traded leads throughout the four previous decades of their historic rivalry, but never since.

Harrison entered this week trying to both reverse a dubious trend and regroup off a season-opening loss at Eastchester. Rye, The Journal News’ No. 1-ranked team in Class A, will provide both a familiar and formidable obstacle: The Garnets have won 13 of their last 14 against the Huskies, including two games in the span of a week just last year.

“Our kids – our backs are against the wall, so we have no other option except to move forward and fight our way out of this,” said Harrison coach Dom Zanot, whose team leads the all-time series 42-41-3. “The kids are dialed in mentally and physically and we’ve had a very good week of practice. We just have to put our best foot forward on Saturday. We’re not looking for a moral victory. We’re doing everything we can to win the game.”

Week 2 picks: 87th playing of Rye-Harrison tops this week’s predictions

Week 1 rewind: High school football scoreboard, Sept. 2-3

The Week 2 high school football schedule

Thomson: Rye, Harrison join forces to grow tradition

For the Huskies, that process might start at the line of scrimmage. Rye has returned a collection of skill players who starred for last year’s Class A runner-up, including quarterback T.J. Lavelle and two-way stars Mat Bruno, Brett Egan and Jamie Chabot. But the Garnets broke in four new starters on their offensive line during last week’s 42-7 win at Beacon, while Harrison welcomed back returning linemen Robert Donohue, Sonny LoFranco, Harrison Witte and Zef Djurasevic.

“I’m not downplaying this game because I think their coach has worked hard and I know they have their whole offensive and defensive line coming back,” Rye coach Dino Garr said. “That’s their strength. Our weakness is that we have some people learning to play at that position. … We have to worry about them being more physical at the line of scrimmage than us.”

To that end, Harrison outgained Eastchester 330-215 last week despite playing two new quarterbacks, Michael Cherico and Frank Nannariello, but lost 22-20. The players said that result hasn’t dampened their excitement for this week, not with so much pride at stake.

LoFranco, a senior tackle, said the Huskies believe they can beat Rye despite knowing few expect that of them.

“I’m sure we’re viewed as the underdog in this situation, but we can’t act like or think we’re underdogs,” LoFranco said. “We have to think we’re right on the same level with these guys. You can’t beat somebody if you don’t think that, so we just have to come out and play as hard as we can. And we have to finish.”

Harrison actually started strong in last year’s regular-season finale before Rye’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half of a 28-14 victory. The Garnets were much more dominant the following week, rolling to a 34-0 halftime edge and winning 34-6 in the Class A qualifying round.

With so many players returning on both sides, little appears to have changed between the rivals. Harrison hopes to prove that false.

“We all want to get those games back and want to prove we’re a good team,” LoFranco said. “Last year in that second game (vs. Rye), we didn’t prove we are a good team, so we want to come back and right our wrongs — prove that we’re stronger and faster now.”

Good morning, lohud volleyball faithful! For those of you who did not see any of the previous posts, I was at a concert last night, which is why this is going up now. (For those wondering, it was a great time.)

I’m covering some football tonight, but I’m going to try and catch Scarsdale-North Rockland beforehand since it’s so close to my apartment. I’ll try and get tonight’s roundup post up before I leave the football game at Mamaroneck. The real feel temperature outside my door at noon was 97 degrees and that is high enough to cancel outdoor athletic contests under NYSPHSAA rules. Check with your school before you head out. It’s only going to get warmer and the humidity is ridiculous. The real feel temperature has be 95 or below according to AccuWeather.com to play.
