I’ll offer some insight with each pick going forward, but after spending a couple of hours tonight updating records for each team my time on the blog is up. The records are based on games that were reported to lohud.com. And in case you don’t know me, I will shuffle teams around early on just to have a little fun or create a little conversation. It’s all fun.

Zacchio: Volleyball's chants, cheers, choreography

The Ursuline School celebrate a point against Ossining High School, during the Breast Cancer Awareness tournament at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, Sept, 10, 2016.

Volleyball players don’t get enough credit.

They don’t get enough credit for their ability to accurately pass a ball off a serve, set a ball for a kill, time their jump perfectly on an attack, or any of the countless other idiosyncrasies that go into making a talented volleyball player.

Often overlooked in the mix are the players’ celebrations after each point. Most volleyball players have the athleticism of a basketball player and the energy of a cheerleader. Needless to say, a simple fist-pump and “Yes!” does not constitute a proper expression of enthusiasm.

Most teams have choreographed celebrations for when they get a kill.

And a block.

And an ace.

Some are quite creative, like how Brewster players on the court take a knee and pretend to pray to their teammate who just served up an ace, but many teams have similar — if not identical — celebrations due to their simplicity.

ZACCHIO: Superstitions are unorthodox, but effective

ZACCHIO: Westchester (finally) has a boys volleyball team

Regardless of their level of difficulty, the habits themselves always left me with one unanswered question: “Do teams spend time in practice actually working on this stuff?”

Ursuline head coach Gigi Kemp said she tells her team it’s up to them to work out their own cheers on their own time. Yorktown head coach Katy Sherwood said that since most players do club volleyball in the offseason, they often bring cheers over from their travel team.

For some programs, like Westlake, incoming players learn through observation of the veterans on the team.

Caleigh Carr with the Westlake High School Volleyball team, reacts after a point during the Breast Cancer Awareness tournament at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, Sept, 10, 2016.

Caleigh Carr with the Westlake High School Volleyball team, reacts after a point during the Breast Cancer Awareness tournament at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, Sept, 10, 2016.

“It kind of just comes, to be honest,” Wildcats senior captain Kelly Martin said. “It’s kind of like a ripple effect. … Generally, it just passes down. It’s just a tradition, I guess.”

The cheers are simple, and easy to pick up on, because they have to be. The objective is to win the match, not impress your opponent or the fans with your sweet dance moves. The cheers are just a small part of the game, but players find them to be invaluable to the team chemistry.

When their teams record a block on defense, both Westlake and Yorktown stick to a traditional celebration — throwing two hands in the air while bellowing, “Roof!” in the lowest octave they can generate.

The hands are supposed to represent the roof, but what does a roof have anything to do with volleyball?

“It’s a roof because that ball can’t come into my house,” Yorktown’s Amanda Rolle said, causing her teammates to erupt in laughter. “That’s what it is!”

Huskers senior captain Toni Fiore said the chants also serve as a way to intimidate the competition.

“It definitely gets into their heads,” said Fiore, who earned all-section honors last year. “It’s just loud and kind of in your face.”

Players find the celebrations to be beneficial, and anyone who has been to section final can see that the crowd and players clearly feed off each other’s energy. It makes the sport fun to watch.

Then again, can these entertaining cheers be a detriment to a sport that is constantly fighting to get some of their classmates who attend football and soccer games to attend their matches?

On the contrary, Sherwood said.

“I don’t know if people are watching, but volleyball is by far the most exciting sport to watch,” said Sherwood, who has also coached softball and swimming. “I think it is a really electrifying game, and I’ve coached a lot of sports, but volleyball is by far my favorite.”

It’s hard to disagree with Sherwood.

Don’t believe volleyball is exciting? Go to a match and see for yourself.

Byram Hills’ Jack Beer plays the ball during a game with Lakeland at Byram Hills Sept. 14, 2016. Byram Hills won 1-0 in overtime.

BYRAM HILLS – With 8:10 left in the first of two potential 10-minute overtimes Wednesday, Jack Beer showed everyone just what Byram Hills had been missing while he was sidelined for three games with a knee injury.

The Georgetown-bound senior rocketed a shot that had game-winner written all over it. That is until it sailed just over the crossbar.

After Lakeland’s Nick Foci (five goals in the Hornets’ first four games) blasted a shot just over the Byram Hills net and against the crossbar on the dual-purpose field, Beer made a play to notify all of Section 1 he’s back.

Beer, who was slow to get up after going down hard earlier in a collision, showed no ill effects, quickly cutting to pick off a Lakeland pass around midfield. He then sent a through pass down the left sideline for fellow senior David Noel. The sprinting Noel got a step on a Lakeland defender and, as Hornets goalie Nick Estrella came out to challenge, sent a shot past him that rolled into the far side of the net with 2:58 left for the 1-0 victory.

“This is a big confidence-boost for us,” David Noel said. “We can definitely build off this.”

Player of the game: Beer. The Bobcats played to a so-so 1-1-1 record against tough competition during his absence, but on Wednesday they showed what they can do with him in the lineup.

Byram Hills coach Matty Allen suggested Beer still isn’t 100 percent healthy but said getting him back was psychologically important for his team.

“This is a big turning point for us to get our second win,” he said. “It means a lot to win as big a game.”

Turning point:  Beer and Noel’s hook-up for the winning goal.

Stat line: Estrella and Byram Hills goalie Matthew Groll were each credited with only two saves (both in regulation) but Estrella had one that was a gem. With 25:33 left in the first half, he leapt high and stopped a Ryan Noel shot that was heading under the crossbar.

Quotables: Beer said his team believed before the OT “the most intense team would come out on top.”

Noting he respects Lakeland (3-2) and hopes to meet the Hornets and their head coach, Tim Hourahan, a close friend, in post-season sectionals, Allen joked of the aftermath of this game, “I guess he has to pony up some beers.”

Field hockey recaps from September 14, 2016

Field hockey recaps from September 14, 2016

It was sunny and warm in some local areas and cool and stormy, with rain and gusty winds, in others Wednesday. At least one game was declared an official game despite being halted just four minutes into the second half due to thunder and lightning.

That was the Bronxville-Hastings game in which Bronxville created its own offensive storm, striking early and often.

Below is a recap of that game, as well as some others from a fairly light field hockey day.

Bronxville 7, Hastings 0: Hannah Weirens and Mia Bettino had quite a game for themselves at the Hornets’ expense. Weirens registered a hat trick and Bettino scored twice in the abbreviated contest.

Ellie Walsh, Kat Ungvary and Andrea Shepherd also found the back of the cage.

Fiona Jones had two assists and Bettino had one.

Hastings’ Hannah Sperberger had six saves.

Pawling 2, Putnam Valley 0: Olivia Grande scored both goals.

Lauren Mcgreat and Frankie Fleming had assists as Putnam Valley fell to 0-4 on the season and Pawling jumped over .500, upping its record to 3-2.

Croton 4, Edgemont 0: Will anyone ever score against Croton? Well, that’s a good bet. But the Tigers aren’t making it easy.

Croton upped its season mark to 5-0 via its fifth shutout.

Teagan Burke and Loretta Violante each had a pair of goals.

Emily Kehoe and Victoria Lewis both had an assist.

Rye Neck 0, Pleasantville 0: Christina Shin repeatedly came up big, stopping 12 shots for Rye Neck.

Her counterpart, Jackie Bendenson, wasn’t tested nearly as much but handled the four shots she faced.

Valhalla 0, North Salem 0: Zeros were also the only things on the scoreboard for the Viking-Tiger game.

North Salem’s Oliva Desanto had eight saves and Valhalla’s Breanna Ciardullo had four.

Based on the results I’m seeing, any contender in Class AA better pick up as many wins as possible to avoid running into an upset early on in the playoffs. There are so many good teams. Scarsdale got a reaction yesterday when it upended North Rockland. The goal has to be attaining the highest seed possible. And even then, sectionals are going to be very interesting from the quarterfinals on in.

We’re sending Alex Solomon back onto the sideline today. He’ll be watching Greeley at Suffern and you can follow him @SlimbradyAlex for updates. The story will be on the blog later.

I’ll be around later tonight and hope to have the recaps up by 11 p.m. You can always tag me @hoopsmbd with a scoring update and I’ll share.

The Peekskill girls basketball team has had little trouble with consistency on the court in recent years, winning three Section 1 championships over a four-year span from 2011-14. The Lady Red Devils have not been as lucky on the sidelines, with their fourth head coach in as many years to be introduced this season.

James Robinson Jr. was approved by the Peekskill Board of Education on Sept. 6, according to Peekskill superintendent Dr. David Fine, and is already coaching the Lady Red Devils in their Fall League games at Jefferson Valley Fit Club.

Peekskill alum James Robinson was approved by the Peekskill Board of Education to become the Lady Red Devils head coach on Sept. 6, 2016.

Peekskill alum James Robinson was approved by the Peekskill Board of Education to become the Lady Red Devils head coach on Sept. 6, 2016.

“He’s focused on building a successful, positive program from the ground, up,” Dr. Fine said of Robinson, who helped lead the Peekskill boys basketball team to a Section 1 title as a player in 1981. “His focus was always about the student-athlete and growing them as individuals.”

Dr. Fine could not confirm how many applicants went out for the position.

Robinson brings a wealth of success to his alma mater, winning two National Junior College Athletic Association titles at Monroe College — one as an assistant coach (2011) and one as a head coach (2012).

“I think people are excited that we were able to find someone that is a part of the Peekskill community, has a successful track record, and it’s evident that he’s always been focused on the individual and the student-athlete,” Dr. Fine said.

Dr. Fine praised the girls basketball players, past and present, for their success in and out of the classroom despite a revolving door at the head coaching position.

“I think the girls have had a pretty successful run over the last few years, for sure, and there’s a great group of young ladies that have been put on the floor,” Dr. Fine said. “When I define ‘great,’ they’ve been amazing in the classroom and as a team, with all of the changes and adversity they’ve had to go through over the last few years, and they’ve really stuck together.

Peekskill has posted a 52-15 record over the last three years, with two trips to the section final and a championship in 2014.

RYE – There was a lot of pressure on Lakeland coming into Thursday’s game against archrival Rye.

In a sense, there always is.

Blame those records: No losses since 2012. No losses to a New York opponent since 2010.

The captain of the ship for all those wins has been Sharon Sarsen. She’s in her 35th year and has guided the Hornets to 10 state championships, including seven in the last seven years.

Lakeland’s Meghan Fahey trips over Rye goalie Maggie Devlin during a varsity field hockey game at Rye High School on Thursday. Lakeland defeated Rye 3-1.

As she stood on the sideline Thursday, she wore a gold 500 around her neck. That marks her 500th win, which occurred in 2012 against Somers.

It’s time for Sarsen to get new jewelry.

Lakeland recorded its fourth win of the season Thursday, beating Rye 3-1.

The win was Sarsen’s 579th, a record for field hockey coaches in New York. The victory broke a tie with the late Nancy Jean Cole, who coached at Centereach and Ward Melville over a 35-year career.

“There’s really no one like her,” said Lakeland senior Mia Lennon, a four-year varsity player. “I can’t say what her secret is. She just knows so much about the game and she’s pushing us to be better players and better people.”

Postgame, Sarsen, who played for John Jay-Cross River (Class of ’78) before playing both field hockey and lacrosse for SUNY-Cortland, held a huge bouquet of flowers that came from her team. She noted it wasn’t until she received a text Thursday morning that she knew she was on the brink of setting the state record.

What do 579 wins mean?

“I know I’ve done it a long time and hopefully what I’ve done works,” Sarsen said, understating things a bit.

What she did certainly worked Thursday.

Rye, which fell to Lakeland in last year’s Section 1 Class B final, came out fired up and dominated time of possession for the first couple of minutes.

Then Lakeland, which finished the game with a 14-2 lead in penalty corners, took over.

Player of the game: With 24:36 left in the first half, Meghan Fahey scored her first of two goals unassisted, burying a rebound off Rye goalie Maggie Devlin, who had a tremendous game that included 14 saves.

Turning point: Devlin, who subsequently had an absolute gem of a save off a Kelsey McCrudden rocket, got burned by another rebound with 4:18 left in the half, as Julianna Cappello beat the Garnets’ D to the carom to score.

Stat line: Fahey’s second goal came with 25:31 left in the second half on a breakaway off a McCrudden feed.

Rye got on the board down a player to a five-minute penalty when Kelly Ott fed Faith Bennett, who beat Lakeland netminder Cassie Halpin (one save) low to her left.

Quotables: Rye defenseman Lotje Rogaar, who had a very strong game, said despite losing 13 players to graduation from last year’s team, she thinks Rye is very close to Lakeland’s level.

“We are going to improve so much and grow together as a team,” she said. “I’m happy with this game. I thought we played really well and really showed everyone who we are as a team.”

Rye coach Simon Hochstenbach – and Rye’s players and fans – wasn’t happy with some second-half calls and non-calls, including two five-minute penalties assessed against the Garnets. But Hochstenbach said, “We didn’t lose actually lose because of the officiating.”

He said, playing rival Lakeland, there was “more stress and our new girls were excited” and they “weren’t themselves” in the first half.

“Next time, that will probably drop off their shoulders,” he said.

Field hockey scores from September 15, 2016

Field hockey scores from September 15, 2016

The biggest news in local field hockey Thursday was also the biggest news in field hockey in the state. Likely it was the biggest news in all scholastic sports in New York.

That was Sharon Sarsen, the former John Jay-Cross River standout, earning her 579th win at Lakeland, a record number of wins for high school field hockey coaches in New York.

That occurred in a 3-1 win over Rye, which Lakeland defeated in last year’s Section 1 Class B finals en route to another perfect season and its 10th state championship and seventh consecutive.

The Lakeland-Rye game (see related story) was obviously the game of the day.

But there was also a lot of other action. Below are the recaps, beginning with Sarsen’s alma mater.

John Jay-Cross River 7, Byram Hills 0: Seven different Indians scored in the shutout win.

Sarah McAvey, Tyman Cronin, Paige Lombardi, Hannah Babcock, Julia Casey, Anna Prusko and Laragh Cronin found the back of the cage.

Rosie Ceisler had two assists and Cara O’Reilly and Cara Weinstein one each.

Valhalla 4, Hen Hud 0: Lauren Kreder scored twice and added an assist.

Brenna Docket and Angela Vlad also scored and Jackie Gonzalez had two assists.

Ossining goalie Carole Sinacore turned away 16 shots.

Clarkstown South 8, Ossining 0: Colleen Geyer led the Vikings with two goals.

Grace Dempsey, Dara Studnitzer, Kaitlyn Ahle, Caitlyn Enright, Danielle Noia and Tara Maloney also scored.

Clare Dooley had two assists and Annie O’Neill and Ahle had one each.

Miranda Linehan stopped three shots for Clarkstown South.

Scarsdale 8, Mahopac 1: Erin Nicholas and Audrey Shaev both scored twice and Jilly Mehlman, Abby Glaser, Julia Jamesley and Theresa Alarcon each had a goal.

Nicholas had two assists. Glaser, Mehlman, Emma Coleman and Angie Burns had one assist apiece.

White Plains 2, Carmel 0: The Tigers upped their record to 2-1 behind goals by Jenna Reilly and Hannah Katz.

Shayna Berglas had an assist and goalie Jennifer Salazar stopped five shots.

Carmel keeper Elaina Nacinovich had 16 saves.

Mamaroneck 2, Horace Greeley 0: Sophie Brill and Brigid Knowles scored, both assisted by Elizabeth Brissette.

Paige Danehy and Sophie Brill did a good job shutting down previously undefeated Greeley by controlling the midfield and passing in transition.

Willa Kuhn had nine saves for the Quakers. Charlotte Mackie stopped four shots for Mamaroneck.

Stepinac’s DeVante Reid tries to avoid a tackle during his team’s 48-6 victory over Iona Prep at Stepinac High School on Sept. 19, 2015.

2016 preseason rankings: Stepinac begins where it ended — No. 1 again

Week 2 rankings: After near-stumbles, Scarsdale, South remain in Top 10

Week 3 lohud football rankings

1. Stepinac (1-0) — Now that the Crusaders have opening-night jitters behind them, they’ll move on to a game fans have waited eight months to see. Although Iona Prep has dropped down to the ”AA” division and rendered this a non-league contest, the game means everything to players and coaches from both sides after the events of this offseason.

Week 2 rewind: Stepinac overcomes early mistakes to win opener

2. New Rochelle (2-0) — It’s early, but the Huguenots appear like they will be awfully hard to beat during the regular season. They travel to Scarsdale Friday night for the first time since the Raiders upset them on Dean Field in 2013.

Week 2 rewind: New Rochelle overcomes heat to pound old rival Mount Vernon

3. Iona Prep (0-1) — The Gaels were routed 48-6 at Stepinac last year, losing by a larger margin than at any point during the 53-year history of their rivalry. However, they looked more organized and dynamic during last week’s season-opening loss to Brunswick, an elite opponent. They might not be ready to win this game under former Stepinac coordinator Joe Spagnolo, but appear good enough to compete. If Iona cleans up its play on special teams and is efficient offensively, an upset isn’t out of the question.

Week 2 rewind: Iona Prep comes up short in shootout, 48-40

4. Rye (2-0) — Few opponents would’ve stayed with Rye last Saturday considering how well it played, but the rout of rival Harrison was startling in its efficiency. It proved that if the Garnets block and tackle, they’ll have the weapons to win a Class A title.

Week 2 rewind: Rye throttles Harrison to tie series for first time since ’74

5. John Jay-East Fishkill (2-0) —The Patriots withstood a very competitive Carmel team 14-9 last week to remain unbeaten, but it won’t get any easier. John Jay will venture to meet Dutchess rival Arlington (also 2-0) on Friday night.

6. Somers (2-0) — The Tuskers will travel to Yorktown this week and their newfound passing attack could be the rabbit in their hat. The combination of Kevin Olifers to Matt Pires has already hooked up for five touchdowns. The Huskers are a pretty complete team, but Rye in particular has taken advantage of their pass defense in the past. Somers will no doubt try to follow suit.

7. Yorktown (2-0) — Likewise, Somers will be tasked with proving it can hold up defensively against Yorktown’s running game, which starts with strong line play and boasts a diverse group of ball carriers. Quarterback Jose Boyer had success through the air last week. If he can repeat that, the Huskers will be tough to stop.

8. Clarkstown South (2-0) — South’s defense dominated in last week’s heat-interrupted win at North Rockland, and its Week 1 squeaker against rival Clarkstown North looks much more formidable after the Rams routed Ramapo 48-7.

9. Arlington (2-0) — Neither win — Carmel or Ketcham — proved easy, but new coach Michael Morano and his team have shown an ability to withstand fourth-quarter pressure. That could serve them well Friday against John Jay-East Fishkill in a game that’s bound to be tight.

10. Scarsdale (2-0) — The Raiders have won their two games, against Mount Vernon and Mamaroneck, by a total of three points, so they’ll have to be sharper Friday against New Rochelle. They players and coaching staff have plenty of experience against the Huguenots and will have that on their side. They shouldn’t be intimidated.

Week 2 rewind: Scarsdale holds off Mamaroneck in wet-and-wild win

On the bubble: Brewster (2-0), Ketcham (1-1), Spring Valley (2-0), Clarkstown North (1-1).

Class AA — 1. New Rochelle, 2. John Jay-East Fishkill, 3. Clarkstown South, 4. Arlington, 5. Scarsdale, 6. Ketcham, 7. Spring Valley, 8. Clarkstown North, 9. Carmel, 10. North Rockland.

Class A — 1. Rye, 2. Somers, 3. Yorktown, 4. Brewster, 5. Lourdes, 6. Hen Hud, 7. Tappan Zee, 8. Sleepy Hollow, 9. John Jay, 10. Pearl River.

Class B — 1. Westlake, 2. Nanuet, 3. Pleasantville, 4. Valhalla, 5. Ardsley.

Class C/D — 1. Woodlands, 2. Rye Neck, 3. Dobbs Ferry, 4. Bronxville, 5. Tuckahoe.

Catholic/Private — 1. Stepinac, 2. Iona Prep, 3. Rye Country Day, 4. Hackley, 5. Kennedy.
