Poor field forces postponement of CHSFL final rematch

Archbishop Stepinac players walk off of the turf field at Macombs Dam Park in the shadow of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, after their game with Cardinal Hayes had to be postponed, Sept. 24, 2016.

NEW YORK – Perhaps Stepinac’s first impression at Macombs Dam Park was a bad omen. Once the Crusaders climbed the stairs to the turf field across East 161st St. from Yankee Stadium, they were greeted by dozens of New Yorkers playing soccer.

What first appeared to be a minor inconvenience soon became the least of the Crusaders’ problems. The poor condition of the turf resulted in the postponement of Stepinac’s game against Cardinal Hayes. The rematch of last year’s CHSFL ”AAA” championship will now be played at Stepinac, likely at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday.

“It’s been worsening,” said Cardinal Hayes coach C.J. O’Neil, whose team lost to Stepinac in last year’s final. “This is our first home game this year. We thought it was going to be remediated in time. Apparently, the Parks Department didn’t get an opportunity to, so here we sit.”

The field appeared to have separated at a seam running along the 32-yard line near the Yankee Stadium side. It created a gap of approximately 3 inches that stretched the width of the field and actually increased in depth closer to Cardinal Hayes’ sideline.

“They were going to get something to fill in the hole, but I said, ‘I don’t think you’re going to solve this. That hole is huge,’ ” Stepinac coach Mike O’Donnell said.

The teams played a junior varsity game Friday night at the field — a New York City public park — but O’Donnell said he did not attend the game and was unaware of the extent of the damage. His varsity had never played a game there at Macombs Dam Park. Stepinac’s previous road games against Cardinal Hayes had been played at SUNY Maritime in the Bronx or Riverbank State Park in Manhattan.

The playing field at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx was deemed unsafe and forced the postponement of Stepinac's game with Cardinal Hayes on Sept. 24, 2016.

The playing field at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx was deemed unsafe and forced the postponement of Stepinac’s game with Cardinal Hayes on Sept. 24, 2016.

Stepinac (2-0), the two-time defending CHSFL champ, entered the game ranked No. 2 in the state. Cardinal Hayes (1-1) has fought injuries to its top players early this season, but it’s arguably Stepinac’s biggest challenger in the league.

“I just don’t think with the type of football that was going to be played that it would be fair to the kids playing,” O’Donnell said. “It’s a situation where if anyone got hurt, you open yourself up to all kinds of liability.

“Our kids were ready to play. Their kids are ready to play. We didn’t come down here to cause a problem. I just didn’t think it was safe.”

Panas puts family first before defending tournament title

“Family, school, volleyball.”

That’s the credo on which the Panas volleyball team is based, and it was on full display Saturday morning at the annual Brown and Gold volleyball tournament at Clarkstown South High School.

Panas takes on Yorktown at the Vikings Volleyball Tournament at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Panas takes on Yorktown at the Vikings Volleyball Tournament at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Panthers assistant coaches Ashley Murphy and Kurt Pelaccio handled the coaching responsibilities during pool play while head coach Joe Felipe dropped his son Dominic, 7, off at a soccer game near his home in Dutchess County. Felipe’s absence did little to deter Panas, which topped Old Tappan (N.J.) in the final for the second straight year to defend its tournament title.

“I, a lot of times, have to put family aside for volleyball,” Felipe said. “Today, I had to go, so I put a little more responsibility on (the team) — trusting them that they’re going to get the job done when I’m not there on top of them.”

Felipe’s trust was not misguided. Panas rolled through the tournament, grabbing the No. 1 seed in the playoff bracket after going undefeated in pool play before beating Clarkstown South, Yorktown, River Dell (N.J.), and Old Tappan en route to the title. Panas junior Yvette Burcescu was named tournament MVP for the second consecutive year, drawing little surprise from the crowd swarmed around the court.

Clarkstown South head coach and tournament director Paul Bacsardi’s introduction of Burcescu, last year’s Journal News/lohud.com Westchester/Putnam player of the year, for the award confirmed what many have already known: “Yvette” is now at mononym status.

“I think it’s really all mental when it comes down to two teams that are equal, skill-wise,” Burcescu said after a 25-22 winner-take-all final. “We all just have to talk about it and know that we’re in it for the same thing — to win.”

The finals marked the third consecutive year that Panas and Old Tappan have met in the title match. Senior setter Julianna Bottarini and junior libero Sabrina Patriciello were also named to the all-tournament team, which did not consist of any Section 1 players outside of Panas.

Panas, which is the top-ranked Class A team in the state and the second-ranked team overall, dropped its first match of the year last week to Penfield at a tournament in Baldwinsville. While the loss does not count against the team’s record, as is the case with weekend tournaments, Felipe and Burcescu said it likely helped for this weekend.

“I think so,” Burcescu said. “We needed it.”

ORANGEBURG – The last time that Tappan Zee played Pearl River, the Dutchmen failed to net a goal in a disappointing loss with the Class A section title on the line.

They waited nearly a full year for a shot at redemption, but Saturday morning felt like more of the same as TZ went over 70 minutes without scoring.

In a flash, momentum shifted with two goals in about a minute to force overtime, and there was no stopping the Dutchmen from there. The result was an improbable 3-2 win over their biggest rival in a game that these players won’t forget for a long time.

“It’s a crazy game,” said senior Jack Samett, who scored the tying goal on a penalty kick in the 74th minute. “You never know what’s going to happen. Once you score a goal, your spirit is up and the other team is playing a little cautious.”

RELATED: Tappan Zee football routed Pearl River on Friday to win the Orange Bowl

The Pirates scored both of their goals in a dominant first half, one coming from Thomas Wilson in the 24th minute and the next from Craig MacDonald less than two minutes before halftime.

After being outshot 11-3 in the opening 40 minutes, TZ continued to play back on its heels for much of the second half. But once striker Jorge Umana booted in a well-struck goal from 15 yards out in the 73rd minute, everything began to change.

Samett was awarded the penalty kick shortly thereafter, which tied the game at 2-2, and the Dutchmen were suddenly moving the ball well and applying pressure. In the closing minute of the first overtime period, Daesob Lim found Thomas Shalvey, who calmly scored the winner and sent the TZ bench into a frenzy.

“That was an incredible game,” Shalvey said. “That’s something I’ve been dreaming about — scoring the game-winning goal in overtime, running over to the crowd and taking my shirt off.”

Player of the game: Thomas Shalvey, Tappan Zee – The senior forward assisted on Umana’s goal to get the Dutchmen out of their funk and then sent everyone home by using his speed and hustle to score the winner in the 90th minute.

Turning point: Moments before Umana scored, the TZ bench was upset with a non-foul call on what could have resulted in a penalty kick. Umana took matters into his own hands (or right foot) and totally changed the complexion of the game.

“Jorge’s goal was the big momentum-changer,” Samett said. “That was the big shift for us.”

Stat line: Tappan Zee (6-2-1) — Shalvey had a goal and an assist, Umana and Samett scored and Lim added an assist. Connor Callan made 10 saves and the Dutchmen took 15 shots. Pearl River (6-2) — Wilson and MacDonald scored and Christian Madigan and Kevin Doorley had the assists. Dolan Ocasal made seven saves and the Pirates took 22 shots.

Quotable: “It’s as intense as it’s going to get,” Shalvey said of the rivalry. “It’s like (Manchester) United vs. (Manchester) City. I’m friends with nearly every single guy I was playing against today and this a game I’ve been looking forward to since we lost to them in the section final last year.”

lohud volleyball rankings

Week 3

1. Panas (5-0, last week: 1) — The Panthers losing to Penfield in a tournament last week shows they are capable of losing, but Penfield is also the top-ranked overall team in the state. Panas’ successful title defense at the Brown and Gold (Clarkstown South) tournament this weekend shows it is still very much the local team to beat. Reigning Journal News/lohud.com Westchester/Putnam player of the year Yvette Burcescu, who took home MVP honors for the second straight year, is a human cheat code.

2. Yorktown (5-2, last week: 3) — The Huskers swept Ossining during the week, then gave Panas a scare in the quarterfinals at Clarkstown South. Yorktown trailed just 18-17 in the one-game playoff match before the Panthers went on a 7-1 run to close out the win.

3. Ursuline (5-1, last week: 2) — The Koalas were swept by New Rochelle in their first loss of the season this past week, but with sets of 25-23, 26-24, 26-24 against a steadily rising Huguenots team, it’s hard to penalize Ursuline too harshly after all it has accomplished this year.

4. Pawling (6-0, last week: 9) — Not only did Pawling qualify for the playoff bracket at Clarkstown South on Saturday, but it also went toe-to-toe with a wildly talented River Dell (N.J.) team in the quarterfinals. Oh, and the Tigers did it all without their top two outside hitters, including all-state senior Jaclyn Smith. Pawling needed a big-time performance to earn a big promotion, and it delivered. Respect.

5. Nyack (6-0, last week: 4) — The Indians continue to impress, sweeping North Rockland before grabbing the 6-seed at Clarkstown South this weekend. Nyack lost to 11th-seeded Delaware Valley, but it does not take away from the stellar season it is currently putting together.

RANKINGS: Preseason power rankings
RANKINGS: Nothing like the preseason (Week 1)
RANKINGS: ‘O,’ you better believe in Ossining (Week 2)

6. Ossining (6-1, last week: 7) — Someone finally got the best of the Pride during the regular season, and it was Yorktown that delivered the blow. Ossining not only battled through the sweep, losing 25-23, 25-23, 25-16, but rebounded to win the inaugural Rye volleyball tournament this weekend.

7. Hen Hud (5-1, last week: 6) — Not only did the Sailors win all three of their matches this week, but they didn’t drop a set in the process. Senior hitter Kirstin Loh and junior hitter Zoe Staats have already proven they are among the most dynamic duos in the section, and the rest of Hen Hud isn’t looking too shabby, either. The only reason Hen Hud dropped is to accommodate Pawling.

8. North Rockland (4-3, last week: 5) — The Red Raiders appear to be in free-fall on paper, dropping three of their last four matches, but two of the losses came at the hands at top-five lohud-ranked teams (Ursuline, Nyack). There’s still plenty of season left for North Rockland to work out its kinks, and a moderate week coming up should help the Red Raiders boost their confidence on the court.

9. Scarsdale (3-3, last week: 8) — The loss to Ursuline was, if nothing else, a fair prediction. The Raiders bounced back by beating Mamaroneck on Thursday for head coach Ann Marie Nee’s 100th career win. Tuesday’s match against New Rochelle could be telling for both teams.

10. Pelham (4-1, last week: 10) — The Pelicans were on their way out of the top 10 after losing a five-set battle to unranked Rye on Wednesday, but clawed back after a nice sweep of Ardsley on Thursday. Pelham let up 20 aces against Rye, which is rarely a recipe for success, but it’s also a flaw the Pelicans can remedy by season’s end.

On the bubble:  Ardsley, Arlington, Eastchester, John Jay-East Fishkill, New Rochelle

Class AA — 1. Ursuline, 3. Ossining, 3. North Rockland, 4. Scarsdale, 5. New Rochelle, 6. John Jay-East Fishkill, 7. Arlington, 8. Fox Lane, 9. Horace Greeley, 10. Suffern

Class A — 1. Panas, 2. Yorktown, 3. Nyack, 4. Hen Hud, 5. Pelham, 6. Eastchester, 7. Harrison, 8. Tappan Zee, 9. Somers, 10. Peekskill

Lohud boys soccer rankings
Records as of Sunday, Sept. 25

1. Yorktown (7-1) Since rising to No. 1 last week, the Huskers have continued their strong play with wins over Lakeland, Port Chester and Ossining. Joey Landicino (eight goals and three assists) and Enzo Sangiacomo (five goals and four assists) have led a balanced attack. Previous ranking: 1

2. Mamaroneck (8-1) — There is a clear top two in Class AA at the moment. Since their loss to Yorktown, the Tigers have won five straight, outscoring opponents 17-0 in that span. A 4-0 pummeling of rival New Rochelle on Saturday was especially impressive. PR: 2

3. Somers (10-0) — While other teams in Class A continue to get tripped up, it’s been smooth sailing for the Tuskers. They’re the only unbeaten team left in the area and have allowed just two goals all season. Big game coming on Wednesday against Lakeland. PR: 4

4. Tappan Zee (6-2-1) — The Dutchmen went through a tough stretch for a few games, but Saturday’s overtime win over rival Pearl River cured all of their ailments. On its best day, TZ can compete with any team in Section 1, as wins over Pearl River and Byram Hills have proven. PR: 7

5. Pearl River (6-2) — TZ handed the Pirates their first loss to a Class A opponent, which cost them the No. 1 ranking in that class. But they’ll get another shot at the Dutchmen before season’s end and no one is going to write off Pearl River any time soon. PR: 3

6. Byram Hills (6-1-1) — Since getting senior midfielder Jack Beer back on the field, the Bobcats have been as hot as any team outside of Somers. They’ve won six straight, including a 4-0 mark in league play and an eye-opening 3-0 win over rival Port Chester. PR: 8

7. Ossining (6-2-1) – After Yorktown and Mamaroneck, it becomes very difficult to rank the rest of Class AA. There’s been a lot of parity, but the Pride have been more consistent than most. We’ll see how they hold up as the league schedule heats up. PR: 10

8. Arlington (5-5) — The record isn’t pretty, but consider that two of those losses came outside of Section 1 and that the Admirals play one of the toughest schedules around. They’re 3-0 in league play and remain a major threat as the defending Class AA champs. PR: Not ranked

9. New Rochelle (4-2-1) — The Huguenots were generating a lot of buzz in the first couple weeks of the season, but a tie against Mount Vernon and a blowout loss to Mamaroneck in their last two games have calmed things down. They’ll have a chance to bounce back on Monday at White Plains. PR: 5

10. Hastings (6-1-1) — Let’s welcome the Yellow Jackets into the top 10. The defending Class B champs have picked up where they left off last year and have all of the ingredients for a repeat. The addition of former U.S. Academy player Oscar Pereira has provided a big boost. PR: NR

Lakeland, Scarsdale, Mamaroneck field hockey leaders

The top four teams in The Journal News high school field hockey rankings remained the same since all went unbeaten last week.

But the deck has been shuffled, with some teams moving up, some moving down and some moving out as a result of wins or losses.

Below are this week’s rankings.

Lakeland's Meghan Fahey celebrates after beating Rye goalie Maggie Devlin for Lakeland's third goal during a game at Rye High School on Sept. 15. The Hornets defeated Rye 3-1.

Lakeland’s Meghan Fahey celebrates after beating Rye goalie Maggie Devlin for Lakeland’s third goal during a game at Rye High School on Sept. 15. The Hornets defeated Rye 3-1.

  1. Lakeland: The Hornets’ unbeaten streak vs. New York teams since 2008 continues. They punished previously unbeaten Panas last week, beating the Panthers by the equivalent of a touchdown and an extra point. And here’s the thing: Panas is still a good team. The Hornets, of course, subsequently defeated a powerhouse in Wilton, Connecticut. (Previously ranked: 1)
  2. Scarsdale: The Raiders continued to do last week what they have done since the beginning of the season – win convincingly. Now 8-1, Scarsdale’s latest victim was previous No 5 Horace Greeley. (PR: 2)
  3. Mamaroneck: No one came close to taming the Tigers last week as the defending state Class A champions continued to look more and more like their old selves in increasing to 6-1-1. (PR: 3)
  4. Rye: Young or not, the Garnets look strong. They have six wins. Their only setback was to Lakeland. A better idea of who deserves what ranking behind Lakeland will occur when Rye hosts Mamaroneck Friday night. (PR: 4)
  5. Bronxville: The 7-2 Broncos’ only losses have come to No. 2 Scarsdale and No. 4 Rye. Kudos to Bronxville and coach Jacquelyn Frawley for continuing to schedule not just bigger schools but bigger schools with top-flight programs. A big test awaits Bronxville, though, as it plays No. 3 Mamaroneck Monday. (PR: 7)
  6. Clarkstown South: The Vikings are 6-0. If they can be competitive against Mamaroneck Tuesday they’ll show they fully belong in the top 10. (PR: 10)
  7. Panas: The Panthers’ unbeaten season crashed and burned against Lakeland. The loss was fully expected but not really the seven-goal differential. Saturday’s subsequent tie against Nyack either means Panas isn’t quite as good as was thought or Nyack, now 5-2, is better than thought. Maybe both. (PR: 6)
  8. Somers: The Tuskers leapfrog into the top 10 both through their 7-1-1 record and the fact one of those wins was over John Jay-Cross River, which had just upset Horace Greeley. (PR: NR)
  9. Horace Greeley: The Quakers are coming off a rough week that included shutout losses to John Jay-Cross River and Scarsdale. They were a little banged up for the John Jay game but offensive production remains a concern.  (PR: 5)
  10. Croton: There’s no shame in losing to Bronxville. But last week’s game raised the question of how well the Tigers can adjust to artificial turf. Still, this is a strong team in a grass league. (PR: 8)

Player of the week (Sept. 25): Rachel Darius, New Rochelle

New Rochelle’s showing at the Scarsdale tournament last weekend — taking first place in the gold bracket — should have been the smoke sign sent out to the rest of the section. If that didn’t do the trick, this past week’s performance certainly did.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Darius led the Huguenots to a sweep of all three of their opponents this week, including Ursuline, the second-ranked overall team in the section by The Journal News/lohud at the time. Darius tallied 51 kills, nine aces, and 29 digs this week en route to lohud volleyball player of the week honors.

New Rochelle’s week — and more specifically, the sweep over Ursuline on Thursday — did a number of things for the program. It gave head coach Alyssa Patti a long-awaited win over her alma mater, it sent a message to the section that New Rochelle is a contender this season, and it showed the junior-laden Huguenots that they don’t have to wait until next year to compete for a Class AA section title.

Honor Roll:

– Brenna Abplanalp, Nyack: The setter racked up 118 assists over the course of wins against Pearl River and North Rockland, and a strong showing at the Clarkstown South tournament on Saturday.
– Julianna Bottarini, Panas: The senior setter tallied 38 assists in just three games against Lakeland on Monday, and was named to the all-tournament team at Clarkstown South after the Panthers successfully defended their championship.
– Yvette Burcescu, Panas: Making the first of what it sure to be several Honor Roll appearances this season, the Tulane-committed junior took home her second consecutive tournament MVP award at Clarkstown South.
– Zoe Staats, Hen Hud: The junior right-side hitter tallied 43 kills in three sweeps for the Sailors this week, including a 17-kill performance against reigning Class AA section finalist John Jay-East Fishkill.
– Mychael Vernon, Ossining: How did the freshman follow up a week in which he had a 30-kill match? By putting down 38 kills in one match. Vernon returns to the Honor Roll for her sensational performance against Fox Lane, which also included five aces, and at the inaugural Rye tournament, where she was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Pride to first place honors.

Journal News/lohud.com volleyball beat reporter Mike Zacchio will pick a player of the week to be announced every Sunday. This year will also include a five-player “Honor Roll,” which highlights other outstanding weeks that deserved recognition. Announcements will usually be posted at noon. Please try to submit all nominations by Saturday night (or sooner, if the team does not have a tournament/match over the weekend).

Past winners

Sept. 11: Madison Monahan, North Rockland (Read)
Sept. 18: Katie McLoughlin, Ursuline (Read)

How to nominate a player for #POTW

Fans, coaches, players, etc. can nominate players via Twitter (@Zacchio_LoHud), email (mzacchio@lohud.com), or text (if you have my number). I will also select an Honor Roll consisting of upwards of five honorable mentions, so that they’re accomplishments will also be recognized. The final #POTW of the season will be announced Oct. 23.

Please include the players’ name, school, grade, position and stats for the week (all games from Monday through Saturday). Tournament performances (all-tournament team, tournament MVP, team win, etc.) count towards this award, even if you don’t have exact stats.

Example: Brooke Davis, Tree Hill H.S., Sr., OH: Brooke had 48 kills, 20 aces, 60 assists and 62 digs in the Ravens’ wins this week over Catalano, Keller, and McFadden High. She was also MVP of the Whitey Durham Invitational on Saturday.

Disclaimer

There is no science or exact formula to picking a winner, but everything counts — including team’s performance and strength of schedule. It’s not just a numbers game. A girl having a great week against tough competition will probably win over a girl who had an unconscious week against week competition.

There is no limit to how many times a player can win during the season. I will do my best to pick the best candidate. Sometimes that will be a repeat winner. I’ll try to spread the love as much as I can, but as the saying goes, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.” Softball is different than other sports, since pitchers can produce every game in the circle and at-bat. I’ll try not to water it down with pitchers too much.

Mike Zacchio

It’s been more than a decade since I took high school Spanish, and outside of opening a conversation or ordering french fries, there isn’t a whole lot I remember from three years’ worth of classes.

But one thing stands out vividly. My teacher, Barbara Pedri, was telling the class about the reality that someone in our grade would likely pass away before graduation. To a group of sophomores who were around 15 or 16 years old, it was a jarring revelation.

That’s not something you think about in high school. You also tend to figure that if something so tragic were to ever actually unfold, there’s no way it would ever be to someone you know.

Then it happens.

For me, it was Jensy Mendez — a kind-hearted, soft-spoken, former basketball teammate, and classmate of mine — during my senior year.

It seems like everyday there is another community somewhere suffering the loss of someone well before their time should have been up. The hope is that it never hits your community. The hope is that it never hits your inner circle. The reality is that it can, and sometimes will.

What then? We see how they honor those who have passed on, but how do high school students cope with the loss of a friend, a significant other, a teammate, or a sibling?

ZACCHIO: Life, death, and remembrance

Harrison and Eastchester have been saddled with the misfortune of having to go through the grieving process on almost a cyclical basis. Among the young losses in the last two years are Harrison’s Andrew Gurgitano, 16, and John DeFonce, 20, and Eastchester’s Nick DePippo, 23, and Francesco Goncalves, 20.

“Nobody wanted to really say anything,” said Eastchester volleyball setter Karly DiSanto, who is coached by Nick’s parents, Kathy and Al. “We just kind of wanted to be there for her.”

Kathy DePippo said that her bond with the team helped both parties grieve quickly, and in a healthy way.

“It’s the most awful thing you ever want to experience in your life,” DePippo said, sporting a red silicone wristband with her son’s name on it. “The other option was just crawling in a hole and giving everything up, and that just wasn’t who we were.”

When Tappan Zee lost two students — Mickey Reeves and Jimmy Hauburger — in the same calendar year in 2015, student-athletes found an outlet in sports.

Both varsity basketball teams used Reeves’ passing as the fuel to County Center runs that season. Carmella Liscio, who wrote “MICKEY” on her left wrist in permanent marker, said the days after Reeves’ death were “emotional.” Amanda Paul, who was a senior at the time, said the loss “hit home for everyone.”

When the football team clinched a playoff berth days after Hauburger’s passing, quarterback Liam Donohue said it was a “lift” to the community.

The reality is that death is a part of life for all of us, and that we will all have to go through the grieving process at some point, but high school students shouldn’t have to bear that burden — not for kids their own age. High school should be a time spent making memories and forging relationships with people that last long after you graduate, not attending wakes and funerals.

“I think that everyone just needs to come together and know that there’s a way to move past it,” DiSanto said. “Life is gonna go on, and we just have to be more careful and support each other.”

Pleasantville’s Tony Becerra was named the Varsity Insider Week 4 Coach of the Week after beating Nanuet 34-0.

Varsity Insider Week 4 Coach of the Week —

Tony Becerra, Pleasantville: The Nanuet-Pleasantville games are usually a physical slugfest won at the line of scrimmage. Even when the scores between them are lopsided, it’s usually because one team simply overpowers the other. But Becerra and his Panthers have evolved due in large part to young quarterback Jack Howe and their diverse offense served them well on Saturday at Nanuet.

Pleasantville routed the Golden Knights on their home field, winning 34-0 in a clash of perennial Class B contenders. Howe, a sophomore, threw for 236 yards, giving plenty of balance to an offense that saw eight rushers combine to churn out another 328 yards on the ground.

Week 4: High school football scoreboard, Sept. 23-24

The Panthers have been known largely as a run-first team under Becerra, but their complete offensive output on Saturday resembled something you’d typically see against an overmatched opponent. Nanuet, last year’s Class B runner-up, is clearly no slouch. The Golden Knights entered the weekend 3-0 and had allowed just 30 points through those three games.

Becerra’s offense isn’t quite as explosive as during the Nolan Robinson-to-Jack Bramswig days, but it looks like more enough to make the stingy Panthers a serious contender in Class B. Pleasantville has proven it has a complete team.

Last week wasn’t nearly as hectic as last week, but there’s still plenty of volleyball content for you all to chew on. Below are links to everything from my column, to my Facebook Live chat, to rankings and player of the week:

What you missed:

Clarkstown South in action at the Vikings Volleyball Tournament at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Clarkstown South in action at the Vikings Volleyball Tournament at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Column: Coping with the loss of a classmate

What: Eerily, I filed this column before the untimely death of 24-year-old Marlins pitching ace Jose Fernandez. While his death has nothing to do with the Lower Hudson Valley, what his teammates must be going through right now is exactly what this column is about. We read about how students honor fallen classmates and teammates, but how to do they cope with the loss, emotionally? This column ran in the paper on Monday, Sept. 26.

Volleyball rankings: Panas running away with top spot

What: Pawling made the biggest leap in the third installment of regular-season rankings of the season, but since we do not “cover” the Tigers, Panas gets top billing after a dominating display at the Clarkstown South tournament. This was posted to the blog Sunday and ran in the paper on Monday, Sept. 26.

Player of the week (Sept. 25): Rachel Darius, New Rochelle

What: New Rochelle junior outside hitter Rachel Darius is the third lohud volleyball player of the week this season. This was posted to the blog Sunday and is not in print.

Game story: Eastchester grinds out five-set win over rival Harrison

What: My game story from Thursday’s match between Eastchester and Harrison. I also used this match as an opportunity to gather quotes for my column on Monday. The game story features a Frank Sinatra reference in the lede, which is one of my favorites ever written. This article ran in the paper on Friday, Sept. 23.

Game story: Panas puts family first before defending tournament title

What: My game story from Saturday’s tournament at Clarkstown South, which was won by Panas for the second straight year. Panthers head coach Joe Felipe had to miss pool play with a family commitment, putting the team’s mantra to work. This article ran in the paper on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Facebook Live: Chat with lohud volleyball beat writer Mike Zacchio (Episode No. 4)

What: In the fourth edition of my weekly Facebook Live chats on my work account, I discuss my colleagues Josh Thomson and Mike Dougherty’s project on the youth sports industry, why I wrote the risks/rewards of tournaments column, and changes to the weekly rankings. For whatever reason, the chat was set to “Only Me” viewing, so I don’t think you were actually able to follow along live. Hopefully all runs smoother this week. Facebook Live chats will go on every Tuesday night at 8 p.m., unless otherwise noted. If you follow my account (not necessarily add me as a friend), you will get a notification when I go live. The chats will usually last between 10-20 minutes, depending on the amount of material I have to discuss. Email me questions ahead of time if there’s anything you’d like me to address! I’m at mzacchio@lohud.com.

Coverage plans: Sept. 26-Oct. 2, 2016

Varsity Insider Week 4 Player of the Week —

Tanner More, Fox Lane: The senior running back has proven nimble enough to leap a defender in a single bound, but what he did Friday night might even trump that.

Just 363 days since suffering a torn ACL last Sept. 25 against White Plains, More proved he was all the way back, rushing 35 times for 287 yards and six touchdowns in Fox Lane’s 41-22 win over visiting Ossining on Friday night.

Week 4 Coach of the Week: Tony Becerra, Pleasantville

Week 4 Scoreboard: Results from Sept. 23-25

More has already proven himself to be a workhorse. Through four games, he has carried the ball a whopping 109 times for 637 yards and eight touchdowns. He seemed to be heading in this direction last September. He had a 219-yard, four-touchdown day in the season opener against Suffern and appeared to be a backfield staple with Nick Lancia, but More’s suffered his knee injury in Week 4. He had surgery and did not return to action until the team’s preseason scrimmage at Clarkstown South on Aug. 27. All things considered, More might be the area’s comeback player of the year so far.

The Week 4 honor roll

Mike Apostolopoulos, Iona Prep

Ezekiah Bacchus, Scarsdale

Hannes Boehning, Rye Country Day

Jose Boyer, Yorktown

Henry Garrison, Tappan Zee

Messiah Horne, Somers

Jack Howe, Pleasantville
