Byram Hills’ Jack Beer plays the ball during a game with Lakeland at Byram Hills Sept. 14, 2016. Byram Hills won 1-0 in overtime.

Playing without star midfielder Jack Beer for the first three games of the season, Byram Hills got off to a mediocre 1-1-1 start. The absence of the most dynamic playmaker in Section 1 was taking its toll, and the result was a Bobcats team which needed a boost in confidence.

Since Beer’s return from a minor knee injury, Byram has been reinvigorated. With the Georgetown-bound senior in the starting lineup, the Bobcats have gone 5-0, including three impressive wins last week. Beer played a key role in each of those wins, and he’s the latest #lohudsoccer Player of the Week.

In wins over Rye, Pelham and Port Chester — a trio which has played Byram extremely tough over the years — Beer registered five goals and three assists. He had a hat trick and an assist against Rye, followed by a goal and an assist in each of the next two games against Pelham and PC. The result was a combined score of 9-1 in the three games, with Beer taking part in all but one of the nine goals.

“He has a unique ability to create something out of nothing,” Byram Hills coach Matty Allen said. “His greatest asset is that he sees the field and distributes the ball as solid as he scores it. Since he’s been back, our team is playing with a renewed sense of confidence.”

Others who were considered this week included Rye Neck’s Luis Galeano, Pleasantville’s Jonathan Kyriakidis, White Plains’ Pedro Marshall, Spring Valley’s Alex Taylor, Clarkstown South’s Thomas Zodda, Albertus Magnus’ Berry Shupe, Tappan Zee’s Thomas Shalvey, Valhalla’s Lorenzo Luciano, Harrison’s Rintaro Ishiguro, Yorktown’s Joey Landicino, Hamilton’s Luis Rodriguez, Mamaroneck’s Alex Alma, Croton-Harmon’s Lorenzo Auslander, Suffern’s Myles Solan, Haldane’s Andre van Dommele and Lakeland’s Matias Prando.

WHITE PLAINS – Every soccer player wants to see their name at the top of the scoring list, but New Rochelle has come to the conclusion that gaudy stats don’t always translate into wins.

The Huguenots are stressing a team-oriented approach this season, with 11 different players having chipped in at least one goal through eight games. That strategy continued to pay dividends on Monday in a 2-0 win over league rival White Plains.

“We’ve realized that we work best when we’re unselfish,” senior captain Omar Tejeda said. “That was one of our main objectives in the preseason — to work as a team — because everybody has great talent. It’s been working for us so far.”

BOYS SOCCER RANKINGS: Somers claims top spot in Class A

BOYS SOCCER #POTW: Byram Hills’ Jack Beer

New Rochelle’s leading scorer is actually a defensive player, Felipe Tobin, which only reinforces the emphasis on equal distribution. Tobin scored the ever-important second goal on a header in the 47th minute after Tremaine Bryant gave the Huguenots the initial lead in the 15th.

The win had a stabilizing effect after a disappointing stretch during which New Rochelle tied Mount Vernon and got blown out by Mamaroneck.

“We were definitely looking at it as an opportunity to get back on track and get back on a winning streak,” senior Ethan Manley said. “We took the loss to Mamaroneck seriously, but we also took it as a learning opportunity. We wanted to come out here and play a good game. We think we improved a lot from that game.”

Player of the game: Danny Ayala, New Rochelle — The senior goalkeeper was brilliant with some clutch stops down the stretch. He finished with eight saves, including two on breakaway opportunities from White Plains’ leading scorer, Alessandro Battaglia.

“He was absolutely terrific,” Manley said. “Danny Ayala came up with humongous stops today. We couldn’t have done it without him.”

Turning point: In the 64th minute, Ayala didn’t hesitate as Battaglia slipped loose and charged towards the net. Ayala came sliding out and blocked the shot just as Battaglia got it off, which turned out to be the Tigers’ final quality chance to cut into New Ro’s lead.

Stat line: New Rochelle (5-2-1) — Bryant and Tobin scored on assists from Omar Espinoza and Harwan Alzuabidi. Ayala made eight saves and the Huguenots took 15 shots. White Plains (5-4) — Fabio Nierhoff made six saves and the Tigers took 12 shots.

Quotable: “It’s a senior-packed team, and we’ve all been playing together since we were 8 and 9 years old,” Tejeda said. “Everybody here has played on the same team before and we have big expectations this year. I was with (coach Jarohan) Garcia his first year — he pulled me up from JV as a sophomore — and it was a great learning experience for me. It’s been getting better and better every year.”

North Rockland girls soccer head coach Pete McGovern talks to his team during practice. Aug. 23, 2016.

After 36 years of coaching soccer, Bob Walkley is beginning to feel more like a doctor than a coach.

The Section 1 soccer schedule has never been as condensed as it is this season, and the longtime coach of the Suffern boys is seeing the ill-effects firsthand.

“I have never had this many injuries,” he said. “And this is a team that is fit. We lift all winter, spring and summer, along with an extensive summer fitness program and soccer played by most of them all year. I, for one, do not feel this type of schedule is productive for any athlete.”

Walkley’s concerns are shared by many of those who coach either boys or girls soccer.

PAY TO PLAY: The high cost of youth sports
COSTS: Money and time add up in youth sports
JOE GIRARDI: Yankees’ manager not a fan of specialization by young athletes
PLAYING THROUGH PAIN: Does youth sports specialization lead to more injuries?

Section 1 elected to push the start of practices back a week this year, from August 15 (when football practices began) to August 22, which has created a ripple effect. A player must have 10 team practices in order to play in an official game, which meant that teams could not begin their regular season until Sept. 2.

On top of that, the end of the regular season has crept up to Oct. 17, which essentially leaves teams with six weeks to squeeze in 16 games. When you take into account Sundays and holidays, when teams rarely play, you’re left with 34 days to play those 16 games.

The result has been less practice time and more games played with limited rest.

“It’s not healthy at all,” said North Rockland girls soccer coach Pete McGovern, who previously coached the boys for 16 years. “We used to go up to the 24th or 25th of October. Now we’re playing until the 17th and there’s no regard for player safety. There’s only so much that the body can take.”

It’s been commonplace this season for teams to play three or four games in a week, and often on back-to-back days.

In some cases, it’s been even more extreme. Last week alone, Rye played on three consecutive days and Somers played four games in five days.

Athletic trainers like Dave Byrnes of Yorktown have taken notice of the toll that the schedule crunch taken on their athletes.

“The biggest challenge, from an athletic training point of view, is managing the injuries that do occur,” Byrnes said. “In other sports, you have more off days or practice days where you can limit activity, give time off to allow for some healing or give more time to rehab the injuries. We can’t realistically limit effort in a game, and when you’re going back-to-back or three, four games in a week, it will result in an athlete missing games.”

Frank Mazzuca, the athletic director at Nanuet and Section 1 coordinator for girls soccer, has heard the complaints with increasing frequency. And he believes that the objections are justified.

“I’ve heard coaches indicate that they feel the timing is not the best, and I agree with them,” he said, adding that the later start to the season, “…was a sectional decision that comes by way of the superintendents. They don’t want, in some cases, the vacations being cut short for the youngsters in their districts. I don’t think it’s healthy.”

If the schedule isn’t expanded to either start earlier or last longer — which many are hoping for next year — some have suggested cutting the regular season down from 16 to 14 games. Others have wondered if it would be possible to shrink the state playoffs from three weeks to two, seeing as the few teams that qualify are only required to play three or four games.

McGovern proposed a 13-game regular season followed by World Cup-style pool play for the playoffs. Four pools of four teams make it in each class, with the winner of each pool moving onto the semifinals.

All of those options sound more appealing than the current system, which has deteriorated the quality of play while cutting down on the time for athletes to recover and coaches to teach. And with high school coaches working hard to keep their best players from fleeing for the U.S. Academy system, the exhausting schedule is yet another obstacle.

“It shouldn’t be more than two games a week, in my opinion. Three at the most,” McGovern said. “If you’re a high-level player who could play Division I (in college) and you see this, you’re going to say, ‘This doesn’t make sense for me.’ ”

Make it back-to-back sweeps for our Monday night volleyball team. There’s still a lot of season left, but considering I’ll give away a pair of tickets to the NYSPHSAA volleyball championships if we win it all, I figured you all wouldn’t mind a brief update. If you didn’t already, please check out my column from yesterday on how high school students cope with the loss of a classmate. It’s an unconventional topic, but it’s one I felt was worth addressing.

Don’t forget that I will be hosting my weekly Facebook Live chat tonight at 8 p.m. You can click the link below to add me as a friend or follow my account (both will give you a notification when I go live). The chat should last around 10-15 minutes, give or take. I’ll have the replay link in the roundups post tonight.

Forbes: lohud radio show features Pay to Play reporters

“Above the Fold,” our new lohud/Journal News radio show on WVOX, AM 1460, debuted last week with a discussion on the Christopher Schraufnagel case.

Ed Forbes

Ed Forbes

At 11 a.m. Wednesday on WVOX AM 1460, I’ll be joined by veteran sports reporters Mike Dougherty and Josh Thomson, as well as lohud/Journal News sports editor Leif Skodnick. Our discussion will center around Dougherty and Thomson’s just-published “Pay to Play” report. This special project, which took the summer to report and to craft, published last week on lohud and in Sunday’s editions of The Journal News.

Among the findings by The Journal News/lohud team that produced “Pay to Play,” an investigation into the growing world of youth sports in the Lower Hudson Valley, are:

  • High-level high school athletes can spend as much as $20,000 a year on team fees, equipment, travel, private coaching and personal training. It could be as low at $2,000 for a team that stays close to home with a limited game schedule.
  • Outside competition and specialized training have become almost commonplace for students who want to play varsity sports in high school, according to high school coaches, athletic directors, academics, parents and young athletes.
  • A full season of soccer, baseball or lacrosse can easily reach the $10,000 mark.

Here’s a bank of links that should get you to much of the reporting undertaken for this story:

PAY TO PLAY: The findings
THE PATH: Experts explain the path to high school varsity squads
OUR REPORT: How the reporters got the story
COSTS: Money and time add up in youth sports
JOE GIRARDI: Yankees’ manager not a fan of specialization by young athletes
EXPENSES: Cost of youth sports creates bigger divide
PLAYING THROUGH PAIN: Does youth sports specialization lead to more injuries?

Before we get to anything else, you need to read Vin Mercogliano’s column.

It explains why so many teams are playing three and four games each week. The decision to start a week late has brought a number of potential issues into play, and overuse injuries head the list. The end result is less time for practice, less time for recovery, less time for makeup games. Can you imagine what’s going to happen if we get three or four days of heavy rain.

Mercogliano: Short soccer schedule a health risk

And if you didn’t see the pay-for-play special report we just did, check out my story on specializing, which is what a large number of the best soccer players are doing.

PLAYING THROUGH PAIN: Does youth sports specialization lead to more injuries?

In other news, Josh Thomson and I will be on WVOX, AM 1460 tomorrow at 11 a.m., discussing the project. Give us a listen.

We are covering a game this afternoon. Yorktown could make a little noise with a good showing at North Rockland. Alex will be there and you can follow him @SlimbradyAlex for updates. I’ll  be around later and will be putting the recaps online.

Rivera's goal gives North Rockland 2-1 win over Yorktown

North Rockland goalie Jenna Braunagel gets to the ball before Yorktown's Alyssa Francese, center, during their game at North Rockland Sept. 27, 2016. North Rockland won 2-1.

North Rockland goalie Jenna Braunagel gets to the ball before Yorktown’s Alyssa Francese, center, during their game at North Rockland Sept. 27, 2016. North Rockland won 2-1.

THEILLS – In a physical game between two teams that figure to make some noise in the postseason, North Rockland’s Naya Rivera had the final say.

The senior had fallen down when the ball came to her in the 73rd minute, and she spun while on the ground and scored the winning goal from point-blank range in the Red Raiders’ 2-1 win over Yorktown Tuesday at North Rockland High School.

North Rockland took the lead early on a goal by Sophie Morello. Yorktown’s star player, Alyssa Francese, answered right back with a finish off a corner kick.

After Francese’s goal North Rockland began to dominate possession and control the game.

The Red Raiders’ defense was impressive in the second half.

“We didn’t let their key playmakers get in a rhythm in the second half,” North Rockland coach Peter McGovern said. “ We made sure that they didn’t get any uncontested looks in the second half, like they did in the first.”

McGovern was certainly prepared for the star power that the Huskers bring to the field.

“We had a plan going into the game. We knew that they run a lot of their play through 16 (Ivana Pjetri) and 7 (Alyssa Francese),” McGovern said.

Despite the tough loss, Yorktown remained upbeat with an eye toward the future.

“I’m really proud of the way my kids played today,” Yorktown coach Rich Armstrong said. “We came on the road to play a really tough team, and we played well. Our defense was especially good today. Who knows, we might see these guys in the playoffs.”

The Red Raiders are also thinking about the postseason.

“We’re 5-3 now; there are a lot of good teams this year. It’s going to be a really competitive in the playoffs this year,” McGovern said.

Player of the game: Not only did Naya Rivera score the game-winning goal, she was also crucial to her team in the middle of the field. Her long throw-ins completely changed the game.

Turning point: Rivera’s goal off a corner kick that bounced off a few bodies before coming to the North Rockland star, who scored the winner while still on the ground.

Stat line: Sophie Morello and Naya Rivera scored for North Rockland. Alyssa Francese scored for Yorktown. Rockland goalkeeper Jenna Braunagel made 10 saves. Yorktown’s Caroline Nachman made 22 saves.

Quotable: “Caroline is a true goalkeeper,” Armstrong said. “She’s been on varsity for three years, and she really gave us life today.”

Tappan Zee defeats Pearl River 3-2 in overtime in boys soccer action at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Much like what we’ve been doing with our scoring leaders page, here we’ve provided up-to-date standings for every league in Section 1. It will be updated every few days, so be sure to check the date listed below for the time reference.

If any records are off from prior to the date listed, please e-mail me at vmercoglia@lohud.com and I will gladly make the changes. As it is right now, I’m fairly confident that the results we’re providing are accurate.

Here are a few notes about how the standings are laid out.

  • Teams are listed based on their league record, which is the second record that you’ll see listed. The first is their overall record, which gives you a better idea about the type of season that team is having.
  • In the event of a tie in the league standings, I’ve listed the criteria for the current tiebreaker in italics.
  • The conferences are mostly arranged by class. Conference 1 is Class AA, Conference 2 is Class A and Conference 3 is a combination of Classes B and C. The only exception is Albertus Magnus, which is in Conference 2 but is a Class B school.

Now that we’ve established the basics, here are the latest Section 1 standings, which were last updated following games on Tuesday, Sept. 27

Tuskers blank Panas, Lakeland & Scarsdale continue to roll & Suffern, Nyack and Pearl River among other winners

$

Are the Tuskers for real? Tuesday it very much seemed so as they shut out another top-10 team in Panas.

That game might have been judged a toss-up going in but not so with Lakeland-Brewster, nor Scarsdale-White Plains.

Undefeated Lakeland and one-loss Scarsdale (loss to Lakeland) beat up on their opponents by identical 9-0 scores.

Nyack picked up a big win despite Marissa Fortugno’s best efforts and Rye got by Harrison behind Fusine Govaert.

Recaps of those games and more from September 27 follow.

Recaps of field hockey games from September 26, 2016

Recaps of field hockey games from September 26, 2016

Somers 4, Panas 0: The Tuskers continued their hot play as Katie Campbell scored twice and Allison Colavito and Caitie Walsh each added a goal.

Colavito also had an assist, as did MaryKate Mollaghan and Taylor Turchick.

Panther goalie Jasmine Rosa had nine saves. Jessica Monaco stopped eight shots for Somers.

Hendrick Hudson 1, Hastings 1: Anya Van Hoogstraten scored for Hastings in the first half and senior captain Kelsey Byrne scored for Hen Hud with 9:22 left in the game.

Hannah Jones had the assist on the Hastings goal and fellow Sailor senior captain Sarina Abraham assisted on Byrne’s goal.

Both Hen Hud goalie Carole Sinacore and Hornet goalie Hannah Sperber had five saves.

Lakeland 9, Brewster 0: The magic number for the Hornets was nine Tuesday as they netted nine goals to record their ninth win of the season without a loss.

Julianna Cappello and Caroline Cahill both scored twice and Cappello also had an assist.

Cali Cortese and Mia Lennon each had a goal and two assists, Kelsey McCrudden had a goal and an assist and Meghan Fahey and Alexa Ryan each had a goal.

Brewster goalies Samantha Anguso and Antoinette Guerriero combined for 13 saves.

Cassie Halpin and Kellie Smith each had two saves for Lakeland.

Scarsdale 9, White Plains 0: Audrey Shaev found the back of the cage three times and Aliza Mehlman, Jilly Mehlman and Erin Nicholas each scored twice.

Nicholas had two assists and Jilly Mehlman, Emma Coleman and Julia Jamesley each had an assist.

Jennifer Ortega had 15 saves for 2-7 White Plains.

The win upped Scarsdale’s record to 9-1.

Nyack 3, Sleep Hollow 0: Marissa Fortugno was great. Nyack was just a bit greater.

The Sleepy Hollow keeper stopped 26 shots but Arielle Rodriguez and Arleigh Rodgers each scored against her and added an assist and Ava Dobbelaer also scored.

Jenna Dangler also had an assist.

Nyack’s Liz Lavender had three saves.

Suffern 3, Clarkstown North 1: Kim Kaufman, Meghan McCarren and Grace Krebs scored, Krebs’ goal with just 1:20 left icing the game for the Mounties.

Alexa Machado had an assist for Suffern.

Clarkstown North’s Kristin McGrade also scored.

Suffern’s Alyssa Sanchez had seven saves. The Ram’ Alexa Laquidara had two saves.

John Jay-Cross River 7, Lourdes 0: Tyman Cronin registered a hat trick to lead John Jay’s attack.

Julia Casey, Jacque Manno, Paige Lombardi and Rosie Ceisler also scored.

Mia Ardovini-Brooker had 12 saves for Lourdes, which didn’t have a shot on goal.

Rye 3, Harrison 1: Nellie Fisher made 12 saves for the Huskies but had no answer for Fusine Govaert.

The Princeton-bound senior scored all three Garnet goals unassisted.

Harrison’s Julianna Tanico scored off a Sophie Mittman assist.

Pelham 5, Byram Hills 0: The Bobcats’ woes continued. Lay blame Tuesday on Lucy Conway, who had a monster, four-goal game.

Delia Crotty also scored.

Jenna Letizia, Alissa Manos and Madelyn Dunbar had assists.

Serena Feldman had four saves for Byram Hills.

The Pelicans’ Lindsay McNamara had two saves and her teammate Alexi Peters had one.

Week 5 Games of the Week —

Friday, Sept. 30

Rye (4-0) at Brewster (4-0), 7 p.m. — The big news from last week’s Rye win over Eastchester was that T.J. Lavelle left the game with a shoulder injury. The senior QB has been great for the Garnets and they could certainly use him against an unbeaten opponent like Brewster, especially one so capable of putting up points. But perhaps no team has a backup more capable than Rye. Mat Bruno may not be the passer Lavelle is, but the senior is a terrific athlete who has proven time and again that he can lead the offense, particularly on the ground. Rye is also terrific on defense and will force Brewster to do more than just feed the ball to Jack Guida. I think that the Garnets’ superior depth throughout their lineup will pay dividends in one of the week’s best games. The pick: Rye 35, Brewster 20.

Arlington (4-0) at Spring Valley (4-0) at Torne Valley Field, 7 p.m. — In the weeks since Ori Jean-Charles left the lineup with a knee injury, Spring Valley’s offense has been less and less productive, topped off by last week’s three-point effort at Port Chester. However, the defense has seemed to improve just as steadily. Both units will face a challenge this week in unbeaten Arlington, which has proven itself so far, winning tough games against good teams like John Jay-East Fishkill and Carmel. Spring Valley will be amped up to play, but I have to favor the Admirals based on what’s happened so far. The pick: Arlington 24, Spring Valley 14

New Rochelle (4-0) at Clarkstown South (4-0), 7 p.m. — South has had a terrific season so far, proving it can play both offense and defense with some of Class AA’s best. But this is a different challenge because this is the best. New Rochelle has thoroughly dominated its competition since the start of the second half of its season opener against North Rockland. The Vikings will have to throw on the Huguenots to stay in the game and they’ll have to force New Rochelle into a couple of big mistakes. I don’t see South lining up toe to toe and outplaying the Class AA favorite. The pick: New Rochelle 27, Clarkstown South 7.

Lakeland (2-2) at Panas (1-3), 7 p.m. — This game comes at a perfect time for both teams; they are in need of a jumpstart to their season. Nothing better to do that than trying to beat the other. Lakeland has won two straight, winning close games with Nyack and Highland. Panas is probably better than its record, so this will be a challenge. The Hornets won 9-0 in last year’s meeting. Expect something similarly close, but I like Panas to prove it is not a 1-3 team. The pick: Panas 22, Lakeland 20.

North Rockland (2-2) at Scarsdale (3-1), 6 p.m. — After three so-so weeks for its offense, Scarsdale dropped 62 points on White Plains last week. It could’ve easily been more. North Rockland might be more capable of stopping the Scarsdale option game, but the Red Raiders will have to tackle a bevy of elusive backs. As White Plains learned, even if you’re in position, that doesn’t guarantee you’ll make the play. The Raiders might give up some points, but based on last week’s performance they appear poised to finish the regular season strong. The pick: Scarsdale 33, North Rockland 21.

Pearl River plays Lakeland during Westchester vs. Rockland Challenge boys soccer game at World Class Soccer Complex in Orangeburg on Sept. 5, 3016.

With each passing week this season, there has been one constant: Somers keeps winning. The Tuskers are the only unbeaten team remaining in the area, and it’s about time that I see them in action. They’ll host Lakeland today in a league matchup that could either give Somers a firm grip on the title or open the door for the Hornets.

You can follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano for live updates on that game, and I’d also encourage you to follow our friend A.J. Martelli (AJM_PoJoSports) from the Poughkeepsie Journal for updates from the Arlington-Ketcham game.

ICYMI: My latest column addresses the condensed Section 1 soccer schedule, which often requires teams to play three or four games in a week with very little time to rest.

Enjoy the  peace and quiet.

I heard from a number of coaches who  read Vin Mercogliano’s column on the issues the compressed schedule is creating. Most expressed concern for injury. There is so little time in this schedule for recovery, most are cutting back on practice. It’s a double whammy. Some are talking about cutting back the schedule. I can’t recall cutbacks ever being restored so that’s probably best left as a last resort.

Stayed tuned on this one.
