Romeo Holden puts the moves on Clarkstown South

WEST NYACK – None of the lethal moves Romeo Holden employs in the open field are choreographed.

It’s all instinct.

Holden is the running back who will take a mile when given an inch, and the New Rochelle junior made the most of each opportunity on Friday, scoring four touchdowns in a 39-18 win over Clarkstown South.

Both teams came in without a loss.

“He’s like Houdini,” Huguenots quarterback Keion Jones-Hiland said. “All of a sudden, you can’t see him.”

The score might’ve been even more lopsided, but New Rochelle committed six turnovers.

New Rochelle’s Romeo Holden turns the corner on the Clarkstown South defense to pick up a first down during Friday night’s game at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack.

Holden got the Huguenots on top five minutes in when he caught a 16-yard pass from Jones-Hiland. It was only the start. Holden got the sideline all fired up when he went 44 yards up the middle for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

The entire portfolio of moves was on display on that run.

“I find it amusing to see how the defense reacts to my moves,” Holden said. “That’s all just natural. I cut that one up after my blockers pushed open a seam, faked outside and went up the middle of the field. I did a little shoulder fake on the safety.”

He caught a 61-yard scoring pass from Jonathan Saddler in the final minutes of the half, but Samuel Mistretta helped get the Vikings within 20-10 on the last play of the second quarter when he returned an interception 45 yards.

It was a strange first half.

Clarkstown South coach Mike Scarpelli had a medical issue on the sideline, but refused to sit down and get checked over.

“I yelled and I couldn’t see and I couldn’t hear anything,” he said after the game. “The next thing I know the police were there and they wanted me to sign something before they left. One of the guys, a local cop, he’s yelling at me and I’m yelling at him. The game is going on, we have to call a timeout so I can sign a form that says they asked to help me. I wasn’t in good shape. I’m still not.”

The Vikings did steal momentum early in the second half and got within 26-18, but Holden went 5 yards for one last TD with 10:51 to go to seal the win.

Player of the game: Holden had only 12 touches, but he made the most of each one. He ran for 75 yards on nine carries and caught three passes for 87 yards.

Turning point: South came up with a timely interception early in the fourth quarter of a one-possession game, but lost 5 yards on three plays and shanked a punt that set up the final Holden touchdown.

Stat line: Michael Tagaris kicked a 40-yard field goal in the first half for the Vikings. … Clarkstown South quarterback Matt Jung threw a 36-yard scoring pass to Kyle Samuels late in the third quarter. … The Huguenots gave up only two first downs in the first half. … Jones-Hiland also threw a 34-yard TD pass to Myles Taylor.

Quotable: “We’re all going to have to run at practice,” Holden said when asked how New Rochelle coach Lou DiRienzo might respond to the six turnovers. “These turnovers are unacceptable, so we have to run.”

Suffern field hockey players Kate Lenihan, Grace Krebs, Alyssa Sanchez, Maria Frascone and Meghan McCarren load boxes of goods collected for soldiers at their team’s Military Appreciation Game.

Suffern’s field hockey coach had called her team’s Military Appreciation Game its first annual before it was even held.

After the public’s response to it, Thursday’s game may not only be the first annual in Suffern but the first of many locally.

Gaby Somma had hoped between her players’ and parents’ efforts collecting things for care packages for U.S. soldiers and items dropped off at Suffern’s game against White Plains Thursday (a 6-1 win), somewhere between 80 and 130 care packages would be sent.

Boxes that will be delivered overseas to U.S. soldiers are stacked up at Suffern field hockey's Military Appreciation Game vs. White Plains.

But her estimation was way off – happily, way off.

“We have collected so many boxes full of supplies, which far exceeded our goal,” Soma said. “Some of the things collected were soaps, shampoos, outdoor activities, board games, personal letters, adult coloring books, magazines, snacks, candy, etc.”

Her team’s sale of raffles for gift basket donated by player parents and of T-shirts also raised an additional $1,000.

Somma said that money will be used to cover delivery costs and to create more packages for U.S. service members.

The one game on the schedule that really stands out is the rematch between Suffern and Clarkstown South.

I believe they combined for 129 goals the last time they got together. Not really, but it was probably the most exciting game of the season to date. A wide majority of the games in Rockland this season have been unpredictable. Adrian will be on hand for the sequel and you can follow him at @Szkolar_Lohud for updates. I’m off to a football game, so tag me @hoopsmbd if you’re out watching. I’ll have the recaps up later on.

Boyer helps Yorktown evade upset-minded Sleepy Hollow

$

SLEEPY HOLLOW – Jose Boyer was running around like a kid in a cul-de-sac, waiting for a somebody to break into the open.

It was only a matter of time.

He kept the Sleepy Hollow defense in chase mode until Brett Makar got loose in the end zone, then calmly delivered a short touchdown pass that gave Yorktown a needed spark in the final seconds of the first half and led to a 42-28 win.

The Horsemen are 2-3, but created far more static than anticipated.

“Our mentality wasn’t the best,” Boyer said. “We had a good week of practice, but we came out a little flat and they punched us in the face. We had to face a little adversity then come back, and I’m proud of that. We made things happen.”

Yorktown's Brandon Meyreles can't come up with the catch while being defended by Sleepy Hollow's Kevin Bordon during their game at Sleepy Hollow High School on Saturday.

Yorktown’s Brandon Meyreles can’t come up with the catch while being defended by Sleepy Hollow’s Kevin Bordon during their game at Sleepy Hollow High School on Saturday.

Sean McCarthy hit Kevin Borden for a pair of long touchdown passes to get Sleepy Hollow in front 14-7, but the Huskers evened the score then went back on top when Boyer and Makar connected.

It was a deflating moment for the Horsemen.

“He’s like Doug Flutie out there,” Makar said of Boyer. “Some plays, you look back and you can’t even believe it. Jose puts us in position to win games week in and week out. We’re lucky to have him as our quarterback.”

McCarthy did get Sleepy Hollow even when he looped another touchdown pass to Malik Jones six minutes after the intermission, but Yorktown quickly took over.

A methodical drive was capped by a Justin Cavallo plunge into the end zone. Patrick Patierno came up with the biggest defensive play of the game when he intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards. Cavallo pushed over the goal line on the next play.

Sleepy Hollow's Kevin Bordon leaves Yorktown's Dominick Cioffi in his wake as he sprints to the end zone after hauling in a pass during their game at Sleepy Hollow High School on Saturday.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the undefeated Huskers were holding a 35-21 lead.

“It seems like every week there will be a different kid who jumps off the film and makes a mark,” Yorktown coach Mike Rescigno said. “That is so important. If you expect to be a championship team and be in big games, the kid who hasn’t been on the radar eventually has to make a difference.”

Player of the game: Boyer made more big plays than anyone on the field. He threw for 152 yard and two touchdowns. He also ran for 85 yards.

Turning point: Patierno got the ball right back to a fired-up offense when he made a perfect read on a sideline route and came up with an interception with three minutes to go in the third quarter.

Stat line: Makar had 29 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns. … McCarthy completed 16 of 31 passes for 218 yards. … Justin Torres returned a kick 96 yards for a Horsemen touchdown. … Borden had six catches for 160 yards.

Quotable: “It definitely feels good to be 5-0, but we know how deep the section is,” Makar said. “We know we have to fight all four quarters every week and we embrace that challenge. We’re that kind of a football team. We want to grind, so this feels great, but we can’t be content.”

Westlake’s Robert DiNato (5) tries to break away from Nanuet’s Jaylen Cortes (17) on a second half run during football action at Westlake High School in Thornwood Oct. 1, 2016.

THORNWOOD – In its last three games, the Westlake defense allowed a touchdown on the opening drive, much to the chagrin of coach John Castellano. He knew the team had essentially nine new defensive starters, but also that the grace period had run its course.

“We talked about playing defense with a little bit of an attitude,” Castellano said. “Last year’s team had a little bit of an attitude on defense. This team has to develop that.”

The Wildcats looked plenty mean on defense Saturday. They kept Nanuet without a first down until the third quarter, spurring a 35-8 rout in a rematch of last year’s Section 1 Class B championship.

Westlake, the defending champ, forced six three-and-outs in the first half and finally began to find some offensive rhythm in the second behind the running of junior Rob DiNota and senior Joe Ferri.

The Wildcats improved to 5-0 and will host Briarcliff/Hamilton on Saturday for homecoming.

“We had a bunch of great guys coming back,” DiNota said. “Our amount of skill level we have, I think it’s the same as last year or even better. Our offense is just rolling and our defense is up to speed with our offense now.”

Player of the game: Rob DiNota, Westlake. The first-year starting quarterback continued his strong junior season. He needed just 13 carries to rush for 196 yards and a touchdown and anchored a strong defensive performance from his safety position.

“The kid is just a phenomenal football player,” Castellano said. “And he’s as good defensively as he is offensively. We’re panicking a little bit keeping him on defense, but we have to keep him out there.”

Turning point: After an early Wildcat touchdown, the game evolved into a defensive stalemate. Westlake suddenly gained some offensive momentum when it breezed through a three-play, 60-yard drive that was highlighted by DiNota’s 49-yard run. Andrew DiBiase carried the next play in from 5 yards out and allowed the Wildcats to hold a 14-0 lead at halftime. They scored on their next three possessions to build a 35-0 lead.

Stat line: Westlake (5-0) — It didn’t matter that the Wildcats didn’t complete a pass all game. They rushed for 396 yards and outgained Nanuet 395-110. … Ferri had 11 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown and Andrew DiBiase rushed for 53 yards and two scores. … DiNota, Andrew Borrero and Ferri all had sacks. Nanuet (3-2) — Jake Stein had a team-high 56 yards on the ground. He helped set up Connor Breit’s 2-yard touchdown plunge. … Breit (right leg) and quarterback Thomas Fay (concussion protocol) missed the majority of the game.

Quotable: “We’re coming,” Ferri said about his team’s Oct. 15 game at unbeaten Pleasantville. “We’ve been waiting all year for that game and we’re going to come out firing. We’re going to show them all about Westlake football.”

Clarkstown South won 1-0 in overtime.

WEST NYACK – Clarkstown South suffered an especially painful loss earlier this season.

Two weeks ago, the Vikings held a three-goal lead in a game against Suffern with 27 minutes left, only to surrender the lead and lose by three in overtime.

In Saturday’s rematch at Clarkstown South High School, the team wanted to give goalkeeper Elianna Murphy a little more help.

Suffern had plenty of chances, especially in the second half, but the senior, as well as her defensive line, held strong for Clarkstown South.

Fiona Cummings’ goal was all Clarkstown South needed to secure a 1-0 overtime win.

“Last time we played them, it was such bummer to lose 9-6 in overtime,” Cummings said. “If it wasn’t for (Murphy), we would have lost this game, no doubt. She played very well.”

Suffern’s best chance came in the 48th minute, when Elizabeth Ellsworth was pulled down by Clarkstown South’s Faith Quinn in the box to earn the penalty kick, which was taken by Tatiana Cruz.

After Cruz’s successful attempt was waved off due to a Suffern player jumping into the box early, Murphy stopped Cruz on her second attempt, jumping to the left, making the save, and then grabbing the ball after it bounced off the post and bounced perilously along the goal line.

“We were fighting for ourselves, we just wanted to win,” Cummings said. “I think we can play with any team in the section; if we play our game, we can play with anyone.”

Despite having the edge in overall scoring chances thanks to a dangerous counter-attack, Suffern’s offense, which was coming off of a four-goal performance against Clarkstown North on Tuesday, struggled to get more chances in overtime.

“A penalty kick getting called back, you know it’s not your day. We bury that one, we probably settle down and score our second goal,” Suffern head coach Phil Madonia said. “Sometimes, it just comes down to a couple of plays. It would have taken just one play to execute to win the game.”

Player of the game: Elianna Murphy, Clarkstown South. The goalkeeper turned away several Suffern chances. The most dangerous one came in the 62nd minute, when Ellsworth managed to run past the Vikings’ defense on a counter-attack. Her point-blank shot in front of the goal, however, was securely grabbed by Murphy.

Turning point: With three minutes left in the first overtime, Clarkstown South managed to start a counter-attack of its own, getting the ball to Kelly McTigue on the right side. She ran it down the right wing and sent a cross into the box. The ball went right to Cummings in the middle, who blasted the ball over Suffern goalkeeper Cassidy Rykowski for the lone goal of the game.

Quotable: “All the girls have been important; Elianna came up big, our back line came up big numerous times. It was important for Elianna to come up with that save, it helped turn the tide for us,” said Clarkstown South assistant coach Tom Heim, who took over the coaching duties for head coach Chris Kelly, who was unable to make the game. “They worked, they had a plan. Chris develops a plan, and they executed it here. It was beautiful.”

Nyack shuts out Somers, Rye edges John Jay, Lakeland and Scarsdale cruise

$
0
0

Going into this weekend, Somers had been hot. It had taken out multiple top teams. But Saturday Nyack put one ball in the cage and kept the Tuskers from doing the same, gaining its seventh win of the season.

That was a bit of a surprise, as was Rye’s low-scoring win over John Jay.

Not surprising were Lakeland’s and Scarsdale’s easy wins, as the top two teams in the area showed no signs of slippage.

Recaps of those games and others from Saturday follow.

Nyack 1, Somers 0: Hailey Whalen scored off an Ava Dobbolaer assist as the Indians increased their record to 7-2-1.

Nyack dominated penalty corners 8-1.

Jess Monaco had six saves for the Tuskers.

Liz Lavender has three saves for Nyack.

Blood drive makes winners out of Yorktown Saturday

Laurie Connolly of Yorktown gives blood during the Yorktown field hockey team’s blood drive at the Jefferson Valley Mall Saturday..

Yorktown’s field hockey team has a losing record.

Saturday it lost again.

It’s now 1-5.

But Saturday maybe no field hockey team had more of a winning day.

Earlier this year, well before its game against Clarkstown South was inconveniently rescheduled for Saturday, Yorktown senior Lauren Gammer arranged for the Jefferson Valley Mall to host a blood drive put on by her team.

As with Broadway productions, both the blood drive and game had to go on.

That meant fewer donations because those players who faced Clarkstown South couldn’t reasonably give blood and play.

Gammer did because between the blood drive and a family obligation she had to miss the game. She and injured players stayed at the mall, promoting the drive.

She was one of 34 people to give blood. That produced 28 pints.

The way health officials calculate that, that could potentially save 84 lives, she noted.

And so a 7-0 loss to top-10 team Clarkstown South, as unwelcome as that was, carried a little less sting.

Noting her team is also doing an anti-cancer-benefit pink game (like many teams) and a soup kitchen-benefit game (unlike most teams), Gammer said community service definitely is making her third and final year on the Cornhusker varsity “all the more special.”

“We want that winning record but I think the main goal – Gannon’s goal – she’s always trying to mold us into better citizens,” Gammer said, referring to second-year coach Bernadette Gannon.

Gannon has helped do that with Gammer, although the defenseman first started thinking about the importance of blood donations after a school assembly on the topic when she was a seventh-grader at Mildred E. Strange Middle School.

Since kids younger than 16 can’t donate in New York and even then must have parental permission, she said, she had to wait until after her 16th birthday last fall to donate.

In July, Gammer coordinated her first blood drive – again at the JV Mall. That one saw 31 people donate.

Both that drive and Saturday’s benefited the Red Cross. And Gammer isn’t done. She plans to hold another drive before the school year finishes.

She said Gannon, who lives over in Suffern – a hike from Yorktown – “is always trying to do something for the community.”

And Gammer is certainly on board with that.

“I really feel doing community service is one of the best things to do for high school,” she said. “The feeling you get from helping people is just so gratifying.”

And of actually giving your own blood to help others, she added, “It’s a feeling you can’t get from anything else.”

Player of the week (Oct. 2): Jade Iadarola, Rye

Few could have predicted the kind of success Rye was going to have this season. Even fewer could have foreseen the Garnets’ success after an 0-3 start to the year. Since the slow start, Rye has rolled off six consecutive victories, including impressive league wins over Harrison, Pelham, and Eastchester.

A name unknown to the area at the beginning of the year, Jade Iadarola is becoming a household name in Rye and the Lower Hudson Valley. The Miami transfer has put together a sensational rookie season for the Garnets in her junior year, with Wednesday’s 22-kill, 15-ace, 28-dig performance against Eastchester highlighting her stellar start.

Iadarola also tallied 10 kills, seven aces, and 10 digs against Harrison on Monday to grab lohud volleyball player of the week honors to open the month of October. Rye will travel to Ardsley on Thursday, where it will look to complete its sweep of league opponents the first time around this season.

Honor Roll:

– Brenna Abplanalp, Nyack: The setter tallied 10 kills and 77 assists over two wins against Albertus Magnus and Nanuet this week.

– Toni Fiore, Yorktown: The powerful senior middle block absolutely dominated the court this week, racking up 54 kills and seven blocks over three wins this week. Fiore was the force behind a four-set win over Lakeland and sweeps of Fox Lane and John Jay.

– Sophie Fried, Scarsdale: A strong contender for player of the week, Fried had 22 kills in a sweep of New Rochelle and 27 kills in a four-set win over White Plains.

– Hailey McCloskey, Tappan Zee: Watching the senior setter, it’s easy to see why the Dutchies (9-0) are perfect to start the season. McCloskey had 17 assists and 10 digs in a sweep of North Rockland and five kills, 17 assists, and 13 digs in a four-set win over Suffern.

– Marie McNerney, Ardsley: The senior hitter is no stranger to the Honor Roll, but with performances of 34 kills and 14 digs against Eastchester, it’s understandable why McNerney is almost always in consideration.

Journal News/lohud.com volleyball beat reporter Mike Zacchio will pick a player of the week to be announced every Sunday. This year will also include a five-player “Honor Roll,” which highlights other outstanding weeks that deserved recognition. Announcements will usually be posted at noon. Please try to submit all nominations by Saturday night (or sooner, if the team does not have a tournament/match over the weekend).

Past winners

Sept. 11: Madison Monahan, North Rockland (Read)

Sept. 18: Katie McLoughlin, Ursuline (Read)

Sept. 25: Rachel Darius, New Rochelle (Read)

How to nominate a player for #POTW

Fans, coaches, players, etc. can nominate players via Twitter (@Zacchio_LoHud), email (mzacchio@lohud.com), or text (if you have my number). I will also select an Honor Roll consisting of upwards of five honorable mentions, so that they’re accomplishments will also be recognized. The final #POTW of the season will be announced Oct. 23.

Please include the players’ name, school, grade, position and stats for the week (all games from Monday through Saturday). Tournament performances (all-tournament team, tournament MVP, team win, etc.) count towards this award, even if you don’t have exact stats.

Example: Brooke Davis, Tree Hill H.S., Sr., OH: Brooke had 48 kills, 20 aces, 60 assists and 62 digs in the Ravens’ wins this week over Catalano, Keller, and McFadden High. She was also MVP of the Whitey Durham Invitational on Saturday.

Disclaimer

There is no science or exact formula to picking a winner, but everything counts — including team’s performance and strength of schedule. It’s not just a numbers game. A girl having a great week against tough competition will probably win over a girl who had an unconscious week against week competition.

There is no limit to how many times a player can win during the season. I will do my best to pick the best candidate. Sometimes that will be a repeat winner. I’ll try to spread the love as much as I can, but as the saying goes, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.” Softball is different than other sports, since pitchers can produce every game in the circle and at-bat. I’ll try not to water it down with pitchers too much.

Week 4

1. Panas (9-0, last week: 1) — The Panthers are an unstoppable force, and Section 1 does not boast an immovable object. Plain and simple.

2. Yorktown (9-1, last week: 2) — The Huskers picked up two solid wins this week, sweeping Fox Lane and John Jay. The Huskers will have a moderate week ahead before ending their season with opponents that include Hen Hud and Ossining.

3. Ursuline (7-1, last week: 3) — The Koalas rolled through wins against Mount Vernon and Mamaroneck; they will get White Plains on Thursday and Friday of this week. Ursuline has been solid all season and has to remain the odds-on favorite to win it all in Class AA this year.

4. Pawling (7-0, last week: 4) — The Tigers got a probable glimpse into the future in facing Haldane this past Thursday — a match that will likely be the Class C section final at the end of the season. Pawling won the match in four. The Tigers also reached the quarterfinals of the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake tournament on Saturday.

5. Nyack (9-0, last week: 5) — The Indians will get a shot at redemption this Thursday when it hosts undefeated league foe Tappan Zee. The Dutchies eliminated Nyack from the Scarsdale tournament two weeks ago in a grueling three-game playoff match. Christian Collazo and Co. have to be so hungry that the ribs are showing.

RANKINGS: Nothing like the preseason (Week 1)

RANKINGS: ‘O,’ you better believe in Ossining (Week 2)

RANKINGS: Panas running away with top spot (Week 3)

6. Ossining (9-1, last week: 6) — After notching three wins this past week, including respectable wins over Briarcliff and Horace Greeley, the Pride will have a light week this week. Brewster is the only match on the schedule, and that won’t take place until Friday. Plenty of time for Ossining to rest up and unwind a little bit.

7. Hen Hud (7-1, last week: 7) — The Sailors made quick work of a defensively savvy Keio team on Wednesday, sweeping the match in under an hour. Hen Hud will travel to Westlake this Wednesday, in what should be a nice test for both teams.

8. Tappan Zee (9-0, last week: N/R) — Much like MC Hammer, the Dutchies are too legit to quit. Tappan Zee had a strong showing at the Scarsdale tournament two weeks ago, knocking off Nyack, and has notched solid regular-season wins over the likes of Rye and North Rockland. Hailie Festa and Danielle Kowalchuk make up a talented hitting duo, Hailey McCloskey is sensational at setter, and Madison Kousoulas is a nightmare to score against at libero. Tappan Zee travels to Nyack on Thursday it what will be one of the top matches of the season to date.

9. Scarsdale (6-3, last week: 9) — Senior hitter Sophie Fried was on a rampage for the Raiders last week, registering 22 kills in a sweep of New Rochelle and 27 kills in a four-game win over White Plains. Scarsdale has a great week on tap, with a rematch against New Rochelle slated for Thursday and a home match against Ardsley on Friday.

10. Pelham (6-1, last week: 10) — The Pelicans have been a peculiar team all season, but they will have two great opportunities to do some damage this week. Pelham travels to Eastchester on Thursday, then hosts New Rochelle on Friday. Winning either of those games would be huge, but if the Pelicans can do it in convincing fashion, it would do wonders for their confidence to open the month of October.

Dropped out: North Rockland (6-4, last week: 8)

On the bubble:  Ardsley, Eastchester, New Rochelle, North Rockland, Rye

Class AA — 1. Ursuline, 3. Ossining, 3. North Rockland, 4. Scarsdale, 5. New Rochelle, 6. Fox Lane, 7. John Jay-East Fishkill, 8. Arlington, 9. Horace Greeley, 10. Suffern

Class A — 1. Panas, 2. Yorktown, 3. Nyack, 4. Hen Hud, 5. Pelham, 6. Eastchester, 7. Tappan Zee, 8. John Jay, 9. Harrison, 10. Peekskill

Class B — 1. Ardsley, 2. Westlake, 3. Briarcliff, 4. Lourdes, 5. Nanuet, 6. Valhalla, 7. Irvington, 8. Blind Brook, 9. Putnam Valley, 10. Rye Neck

Class C — 1. Pawling, 2. Haldane, 3. Dobbs Ferry, 4. Keio, 5. North Salem

Lohud boys soccer rankings

Records as of Sunday, Oct. 2

1. Yorktown (8-2) — The Huskers remain at No. 1 for the third consecutive week despite having their six-game winning streak snapped by Horace Greeley on Tuesday. Their 4-2 win over Mamaroneck earlier this season keeps them ahead of the Tigers for the time being. Previous ranking: 1

2. Mamaroneck (9-1-1) — After tying White Plains on Wednesday, the Tigers bounced back with a 2-1 win over Scarsdale on Saturday night. They remain in control of arguably the toughest league in Section 1 and one of the front-runners in Class AA. PR: 2

3. Somers (12-1) — An undefeated season wasn’t meant to be for the Tuskers, who suffered their first loss on Wednesday against Lakeland. But with only three games remaining on its schedule, Somers is well-positioned for the top seed in Class A. PR: 3

4. Tappan Zee (9-2-1) — The Dutchmen are riding a five-game winning streak and have been getting contributions from all over. Jorge Umana, Thomas Shalvey, Jack Samett, Sam Gould and Ciaran Shalvey each have scored three goals or more. PR: 4

5. Pearl River (7-2) — The Pirates have only played once since last Saturday’s overtime loss to Tappan Zee, taking out their frustrations in a 6-1 win over Nyack. They were set to play Suffern on Sunday afternoon in a notable Rockland County showdown. PR: 5

6. Arlington (7-5) — Don’t look now, but the defending Class AA champs are getting hot. The Admirals have won their last five games against Section 1 opponents by a combined score of 15-2. Inexperienced to start the season, this group seems to be finding its groove. PR: 8

7. Byram Hills (8-2-1) — Many teams in the top 10 had a hiccup this week, the Bobcats included. A 1-0 loss to Eastchester ended an eight-game winning streak, but there will be more opportunities to prove their worth in an unforgiving league. PR: 6

8. Suffern (7-2-1) — Outside of Yorktown and Mamaroneck, few Class AA teams have been as steady as the Mounties. They’ve gone 6-0-1 in their last seven games (prior to playing Pearl River on Sunday) to take firm control of their league. PR: Not ranked

9. New Rochelle (6-3-1) — There have been some ups-and-downs for the Huguenots lately, most recently a 2-0 win over White Plains followed by a 1-0 loss to Scarsdale. The talent is there for New Ro to make some noise in the playoffs, but they’ll need to find more consistency. PR: 9

10. Horace Greeley (7-3) — Since the Quakers entered the league portion of their schedule, they’ve been on fire. Wins over Ossining, Port Chester and top-ranked Yorktown earned them reentry into the top 10. PR: NR

Clarkstown South’s Danielle Noia, left, and Mamaroneck’s Paige Danehy battle for control of the ball during their game at Mamaroneck High School on Tuesday.

The last week of September/first moments of October offered few surprises for the area’s top high school field hockey teams. As a result, there was no movement at the top of The Journal News rankings. But the bottom half has seen shifts, a team exit and one enter. And, while not listed yet, some teams, including seven-win Valhalla, are knocking on the door to join the Top 10.

1. Lakeland: The Hornets haven’t let up on the gas. As all good teams do, they beat everyone they should beat. But despite significant graduation losses from last year’s state Class B championship team, this is better than a good team and beating everyone they should beat means beating everyone. They’re 11-0 and have no intention of seeing the latter figure change. (Previous ranking: 1)

2. Scarsdale: The 11-1 Raiders continue to dominate. Their lone setback was a two-goal loss to Lakeland, which can almost be considered a win. They play Rye under the lights at home Wednesday night. That game could be fairly close but the Raiders should win. (PR 2)

3. Mamaroneck: Players say their early-season loss changed their team much for the better. The Tigers only other game that didn’t appear in the win column was a tie against a strong Wilton, Connecticut team. And the Tigers, who have one of the best defenses in the section, had a fairly easy time with Rye last week, indicating the defending Class A state champs’ ship is fully righted. (PR 3)

4. Rye: The Garnets fell by three to Mamaroneck and only beat a sometimes very good but also inconsistent John Jay squad by a goal Saturday. Still, it’s unlikely teams 5-10 would beat them. (PR 4)

5. Bronxville: The Broncos are 8-3 with their only losses coming to the teams ranked second, third and fourth on this list. Chances are good they finish out the regular season without another loss. (PR 5)

6. Clarkstown South: A 4-0 setback to Mamaroneck, with three of those goals occurring in the last eight minutes of the first half, just reaffirms the Vikings aren’t a top-five team. They failed to contain the Tigers, allowing cross-field breakouts. But this is still a very good squad with only that one loss. (PR 6)

7. Horace Greeley: The Quakers’ 6-4 record might seem so-so. But it’s a reflection of strength of schedule more than anything else. It fell to Mamaroneck, Lakeland and Scarsdale. Its loss to John Jay is a real question but it wasn’t at full strength and John Jay, as noted above, is sometimes a very good team. (PR 9)

8. Somers: Not sure what happened in their 1-0 loss against Nyack, except maybe Nyack, which enters the top 10 for the first time this year, is under appreciated. But the Tuskers, who didn’t look that strong when the season started, are a very solid 9-2-1 and perfect in league play, (PR 8)

9. Croton: The 10-1 Tigers only remain ranked ninth only because their schedule isn’t as tough compared to the squads above them. But this small-school team might be even better than its ranking.  (PR: 10)

10. Nyack: The Indians join the ranks of the top 10 for the first time this season both because of their 7-2-1 record and the fact their latest win stopped a surging Somers team, totaling stifling its offense. (PR: Not ranked)
