Zacchio: Volleyball term useful, but outdated - The term "side-out" has been outdated for more than a decade, but coaches and players still find it to be motivational.

The Hendrick Hudson volleyball team shouts "Side Out" after the team lost a point. The term refers to a team winning a rally in order to get the serve back. When volleyball was played under "serve to score" rules, teams could only generate points when they were on offense. Volleyball is now played with "rally" scoring, which grants a point to the team that wins the rally, regardless of whether their on offense or defense.

When volleyball was played under "serve to score" rules, teams could only generate points when they were on offense. Volleyball is now played with "rally" scoring, which grants a point to the team that wins the rally, regardless of whether their on offense or defense.

If you were to stumble in to a volleyball tournament or match, it would only be a matter of time until you heard teams shout, “Side-out!” to one another at some point.

A term coined during the serve-to-score era of volleyball, when teams could only register points when they had the serve, a “side-out” referred to when a team won a rally but did not have the serve. The game has since shifted to rally scoring, which grants points to teams who win the rally — regardless of whether or not they had the serve.

So pervasive was the term that a volleyball-themed movie titled “Side Out” was released in 1990 starring C. Thomas Howell.

When the NCAA switched over to rally scoring for its national championships in 2001, Section 1 coordinator Diane Swertfager was one who believed players at the high school level should at least be acclimated to the college format.

“We feel the volleyball players in New York State play such a high level that we’d like them to go to college and play with the college rules,” said Swertfager, who has won three state championships as head coach of Hen Hud. “The only difference is we chose to make them play 25 points instead of 15 points for the fifth game.”

Girls basketball made a similar move last year — shortening the shot clock and discontinuing 1-and-1 free-throw shooting — to coincide with NCAA rules.

The format change was made more than a decade ago, but you will still regularly hear teams yelling, “Side-out!” at matches. There are high school players today who admit they didn’t even know what the term meant when they first heard it.

“I had no idea,” said Tappan Zee senior hitter Hailie Festa, who is in her third year on varsity. “I thought it meant we were all supposed to move to the side (of the court), and I started moving and they were like, ‘No!’”

Tappan Zee setter Hailey McCloskey was named to the all-tournament team at Scarsdale on Saturday, September 17, 2016.

“I didn’t hear it until my freshman year, when I was on JV and I was like, ‘What does that mean?’” said Tappan Zee senior Hailey McCloskey, who is also in her third season of varsity volleyball. “I thought it was ‘Sign-out,’ and I had no idea what that meant.”

Festa and McCloskey said the upperclassmen on the team helped them learn what the term meant and when to say it.

The term may be outdated, but that has not deterred coaches from using it as a way to motivate their players. “Side-out” still lives on at volleyball matches across the country and at every level of the game.

“When you call a timeout and (the other team) is serving, what do you say? ‘Get the ball back!’ No, that’s just too much,” Swertfager said. “You want to do, ‘1-2-3, Side-out! Get that ball back!’ so it’s kind of more of a happy cheer thing.”

Former Hen Hud player Dina Bertoline, the 2002 Journal News Player of the Year under Swertfager, was on varsity for both serve-to-score and rally scoring during her playing days. Now a varsity assistant coach and head coach of the junior varsity at her alma mater, Bertoline said that “side-out” still has a place in today’s game.

“It puts a little bit of pressure under you,” she said. “Even though you’re scoring a point both ways, as opposed to before, it’s a good way to get the momentum on your side when you’re serving.”

Brewster coach Ed Mulvihill talks to his team during its 11-7 victory over Rye at Brewster High School on Sept. 30, 2016.

Varsity Insider Week 5 Coach of the Week —

Ed Mulvihill, Brewster: I was against a tight deadline on Friday night so the contents of my postgame conversation with Mulvihill didn’t get into Saturday’s paper. Regardless, the job he and his staff did in Friday’s 11-7 upset of Rye cannot be overlooked. In fact, by my judgement, it was the best of the week.

Week 5 rewind: Behind Guida, late defensive stand, Brewster upsets Rye

Week 5 high school football scoreboard, Sept. 30-Oct. 1

I’ll use some of Ed’s words to deduce why exactly Brewster was able to overcome Rye, which was the No. 1-ranked team in Class A entering the game. “They’re as advertised,” Mulvihill said. “They’re a fantastic team. Dino (Garr) is a great coach. We were hoping we’d be in it at the end and we were.”

Indeed. Mulvihill’s team overcame a very slow start offensively and did just enough with the football to win. A key spark were the two second-half safeties by the defense, which held Rye scoreless after the Garnets marched down the field on their opening drive of the game.

“I wish I could say I made a great adjustment,” Mulvihill said. “I didn’t. The players just started to play better. I told them going into the game, Jack (Guida) has had three runs over 70 yards this year. I told them, ‘That’s not going to happen tonight. Just stick with it.’ I think the kids believed us and they believed in each other. It worked out great for us.”

That belief allowed the Bears to earn their biggest regular season win at home in many moons. In fact, I asked Mulvihill, who has been around the program for a long, long time as a player, assistant and now head coach, when the last time was Brewster won a game this big on its turf.

“I’ve been here a long time,” he said. “I’m sure they’ve won some big ones. But to beat a 5-0 Rye team like this, a state championship type team, you might have to go back to before 2000, back in the 1990s when Brian Walsh (the current Lourdes coach) was here.”

As Mulvihill himself said: “Not a bad guy to emulate.”

Boys soccer #POTW: Tappan Zee's Jorge Umana

Tappan Zee sophomore Jorge Umana during the first day of soccer practice at Tappan Zee High School Aug. 22, 2016.

One of the hottest teams in Section 1 at the moment is Tappan Zee, which has been soaring since its overtime win against Pearl River last Saturday.

Perhaps the biggest question for the Dutchmen entering the season was who would carry the offensive burden, but they’ve spread the ball around nicely and displayed a balanced attack. There is one player, though, who has attracted the most attention from opposing defenses and still found a way to be TZ’s most productive scorer.

Sophomore Jorge Umana decided to leave the U.S. Academy system this fall and join his classmates, and he seems to get better with each passing week. The last seven days have been his most fruitful, which helped the Dutchmen follow the big win over Pearl River with a 3-0 week.

Umana began the week with two goals in a win over Yonkers, but his most valuable contributions came on Wednesday against Nyack. He scored during regulation before the game headed to overtime, where he showed his ability to distribute by finding Thomas Shalvey for the game-winning assist. Two days later in a win against Nanuet, Umana also had a goal and an assist.

He finished the week with four goals and two assists in the three wins, earning recognition as the latest #lohudsoccer Player of the Week.

“Jorge’s impact since returning from the Academy program goes beyond the impressive statistics he has posted in his sophomore season,” coach Jon Jacobs said. “He is a unique player who makes players around him better.”

Others who were considered this week included Lakeland’s Arben Hoxhaj, Rye’s Sean Traynor, New Rochelle’s Felipe Tobin, Horace Greeley’s Jack Cohen, Harrison’s Gabe Pereira, Suffern’s Paul Prenaj, Blind Brook’s Oliver Kleban, Pleasantville’s Jonathan Kyriakidis, Hackley’s Sam Rinzler, Eastchester’s Luca Fava and Mamaroneck’s Alex Alma.

Romeo Holden scored four touchdowns during New Rochelle’s 39-18 win at Clarkstown South High School on Sept. 30, 2016.

Varsity Insider Week 5 Player of the Week —

Romeo Holden, New Rochelle: Romeo Holden doesn’t touch the ball nearly as often as most of the area’s best players. When he does, however, the New Rochelle junior sure knows what to do with it. On Friday night at Clarkstown South, Holden took over a game between 4-0 teams in his typical economical fashion. He scored four touchdowns on just 12 touches to lead the Huguenots to a 39-18 victory that improved them to 5-0.

New Rochelle 39, Clarkstown South 18: Romeo Holden puts the moves on Clarkstown South

The speedy Holden has been a gamebreaker since the start of the season. Week 1 against North Rockland he returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. Holden has continued on a similar path ever since. On Friday, he got loose for four touchdowns, catching one apiece from Keion Hiland-Jones and Jonathan Saddler and rushing for two others. He finished with four catches for 133 yards and added another eight carries for 75 yards on the ground.

Through five weeks of football in Section 1, Holden might be the player having done the most with the least so far. He’s only touched the football 44 times between rushes, receptions and returns, but he has already scored 10 touchdowns. Holden has 31 carries for 353 yards and five TDs, 10 catches for 239 yards and four scores and three returns for 116 yards, including the 91-yard touchdown. All told, Holden has averaged 16.1 yards per touch and scored on 22.7 percent of them. Those are scary numbers for opposing defenses.

Eleven years ago when Sandro Prosperino took over the Valhalla boys soccer program, his first chore was to send the message that mediocrity and complacency were no longer going to be the norms.

As is often the case when it comes to sudden change, there was some initial resistance.

“We weren’t a soccer school,” said Prosperino, who has coached the Vikings to a 43-14-8 record in the last four seasons. “The guy before me was here for 32 years and he was 60 games under .500. It was a challenge to change the mindset of the old way when the old way was there for three decades.

EXCLUSIVE: Pay to Play, a look at youth sports in the Lower Hudson Valley

MERCOGLIANO: Pearl River, Tappan Zee elevate Rockland soccer

“The toughest time in the 11 years was that first week.”

Prosperino cut four seniors whose lack of commitment was a detriment to the team and had to answer to displeased parents, but it was a necessary evil in order to begin the culture change.

The process of the developing the talent and generating the interest that it would take to be competitive would require more patience. Based on enrollment, Valhalla is one of the smallest schools in Section 1, which only added to the difficulties of turning the program around.

So how do coaches and administrators find success when numbers are low and quality athletes are hard to come by? It’s complicated, but it starts with bringing the right attitude.

“One of the first things I did was try and create a culture of winning, and more importantly, pride in the baseball program,” said Albertus Magnus baseball coach Dan Freeman, who led the Falcons to a Class B title in 2015 after a 21-year drought. “The boys needed to understand that just because we didn’t have as large of a team as our opponents, it didn’t mean that we weren’t just as good, if not better.”

The best way to ensure that you can field a viable team at a small school is to get a head start, which means having effective youth programs in place. Pleasantville athletic director John Bauerlein praised the “Dad’s Club” in his district, which gives parents the opportunity to get involved in the feeder system.

“It helps unbelievably,” Bauerlein said. “They provide those programs with volunteer coaches on our fields and in our gyms, and they’re in touch with our (varsity) coaches. They do clinics that are small fundraisers for teams with those young kids who are interested. They basically try to get the kids interested in everything, so when they get to the high school, they can choose what they like best.”

It’s critical to expose kids to several sports in school districts that may only have a few hundred students because that’s where multi-sport athletes can be the lifeblood.

At high schools with thousands of students, specialization is much more common and accepted. But when it comes to small schools, the top athletes often play two or three sports and represent the best players on each of those teams.

“My football team and lacrosse team almost mirror each other,” Bauerlein said. “I don’t think small schools could survive without the three-sport athlete, and those kids love playing for their schools. They’re very focused and have a lot of school spirit.”

When it comes to winning with an undermanned roster, Woodlands football coach Mike Meade is a professional. He won a Class A championship in 2009 at Roosevelt with a roster of just over 20 players and has won two Class C titles at Woodlands with less than 30.

Meade said that this is the first time in his six years at Woodlands in which he’s had over 30 on his roster — 31, to be exact, which is still a very low number for football — and he credits the “Destination College” program that they’ve implemented.

“We have a whole academic program that we follow that helps our kids in the classroom, and that’s very attractive to the parents,” he said. “We’re making sure that whether it’s Division I or Division III, we’re getting them into college.

“The success on the field is all related to what we do off of the field. Kids feel good about themselves.”

When you add up all of those ingredients — passionate coaches, committed athletes, strong youth programs and a clear path to college — then the wins will usually follow, regardless of how shallow the talent pool is.

And as any of these coaches will tell you, once the trophy case starts filling up, the program tends to find ways of replenishing itself.

“Once you start tasting some of that success, it makes my job and that win-first mentality much easier,” said Solomon Schechter boys soccer coach Bryan Lamana, who led his team to the Class C state final last season. “Our expectations are growing. We keep defying the odds. Every year, I lose about half my starting lineup, and we still manage to stay competitive.”

With no local volleyball going on Monday or Tuesday, it’s a pretty quiet week. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on in the volleyball world.

As per usual, I’ll be hosting my weekly Facebook Live chat tonight at 8 p.m. If you have never tuned into one, they usually run 10-20 minutes and cover a variety of volleyball-related topics plus some other things involved with the job. I’ve embedded last week’s chat into this post so that you all can get a feel for it. Below, before the chat, please find a link to my Facebook account — where you can add me as a friend or “follow” my account to get a notification when I go live — as well as my most recent column, which ran Monday.

In addition to Facebook, you can also follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat at @Zacchio_LoHud. Send me any questions, comments, or concerns you would like me to answer or address during the chat in a Facebook comment, tweet, or email (mzacchio@lohud.com).

Week 6 Games of the Week —

Friday, Oct. 7

Hen Hud (3-2) at Rye (4-1), 7 p.m. — Rye’s loss last week might have been a semi-shocker, but it also should provide the Garnets with a bit of a warning for this week. Remember: Hen Hud gave Brewster everything it could ask for an more back in Week 3. The Sailors went ahead early by three scores before Brewster rallied to win 56-49. The Hen Hud offense is dangerous, especially its passing game. Rye will have to move the ball better than it did last week, but it will also have its secondary tested more than at any point this season. The pick: Rye 35, Hen Hud 20.

Scarsdale (4-1) at Clarkstown South (4-1), 7 p.m. — So New Rochelle, Arlington, and maybe John Jay, but what other teams rank among Class AA’s elite? This game could go a long way in answering that question. Both teams have beaten everyone on their schedule outside of New Ro. Expect a close one, but I like South having that slight edge of playing at home. Plus, as a team that ran the option a couple years ago, South should know how to slow it down. The pick: Clarkstown South 24, Scarsdale 21.

Stepinac (4-0) at St. Anthony’s (2-2), 7 p.m. — The normally imposing Friars have been much more human ever since senior QB Bo Waters suffered a knee injury in their surprising loss to Christ the King two weeks ago. Waters threw for 670 yards and five TDs through the first two weeks, but St. Anthony’s has slowed down offensively since his injury. The Friars are now down to their third quarterback. Stepinac won’t feel sorry for them after knee injuries have knocked out two-way stars Trill Williams and DeVante Reid. The Crusaders have kept right on winning and should be the favorite again here — even on the road at St. Anthony’s. The pick: Stepinac 23, St. Anthony’s 13.

Saturday, Oct. 8

Carmel (3-2) at Port Chester (3-2), 1:30 p.m. — One of these two teams will grab the mantle of “team you don’t want to face in the playoffs,” and I think Carmel might be that team. Look at it like this: If the Rams win this week they will be 4-2 and have won four straight. They lost to Arlington, which is 5-0, in OT and then lost to John Jay 14-9 the following week, so they are dangerous. The key for Port Chester will be playing good defense and keeping the score manageable. Whichever team is for real will show itself on Saturday. The pick: Carmel 17, Port Chester 6.

Sunday, Oct. 9

Iona Prep (2-2) at Christ the King (4-0), 1 p.m. — The ‘AA’ division in the CHSFL has really declined in recent years, but this year is an exception and these teams are the reason why. Not only are Iona Prep and Christ the King good, they are undoubtedly two of the league’s best. Iona Prep came within a two-point play of possibly beating defending champ Stepinac (and with Trill Williams). Christ the King went a step further, beating perennial power St. Anthony’s 14-12. This should be one of the best regular season games in the CHSFL this year. Iona Prep can win, but it will have to avoid committing big mistakes against Christ the King’s big-time athletes. The pick: Iona Prep 40, Christ the King 34.

Buckle up.

We’re only two weeks away from the Section 1 seeding meeting so consider the stretch run officially under way. There are several marquee games on the schedule today – Pearl River vs. Albertus Magnus, Harrison vs. Rye, Tappan Zee vs. Greeley, John Jay vs. Arlington, North Rockland vs. Suffern.

I’m actually free, so I’ll be at Suffern Middle School watching a critical league game between the Mounties and Red Raiders, who both have a pair of losses in I-C. One more could make it very difficult to catch up with Clarkstown South, which is 4-1 in league play. You can follow me @hoopsmbd for updates.

The recaps will be up after I drive home and compile them. You can always tag me with a score update and I’ll share.

Clarkstown South coach Mike Scarpelli pictured during his team’s 39-18 loss to New Rochelle at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack on Sept. 30, 2016.

Early in his team’s loss to New Rochelle last week, Mike Scarpelli suffered a health scare on the sideline. It became so bad at one point that the Clarkstown South football coach’s vision and hearing were severely impaired.

“I just couldn’t see anything at one point,” Scarpelli said. “I was on the ground and just trying to focus on the logo on my shoes without coming up and looking foolish.”

In hindsight, Scarpelli believed he looked foolish regardless. He expressed regret on Wednesday for his behavior toward the police officers and medical personnel he chased away after they rushed to his aid.

“They came based on someone else’s judgment. They were doing their job, but also being a friend and trying to help out,” said Scarpelli, who was friendly with two of the officers involved. “Sometimes as coaches we get caught up, whether you’re 4-0 or 0-4. The priority is your health and the health of everyone involved. I just got caught up and didn’t handle the situation well.”

NEW ROCHELLE 39, CLARKSTOWN SOUTH 18: Romeo Holden puts the moves on Clarkstown South

Scarpelli signed a waiver during the game that stated he had refused medical assistance. He continued coaching through the end of the Vikings’ 39-18 loss to New Rochelle. It was their first loss of the season after a 4-0 start.

After the game, Scarpelli said he told his players, “I’m upset and I’m disappointed, but not at you guys. I’m disappointed at myself for my behavior. I’m like you guys, I’m a fighter and I’m going to stay with you until the very end, but I should’ve handled it better.”

Scarpelli said his most severe symptoms have dissipated, but he still hasn’t felt well since Friday. He had felt fine prior to the game, although he said the previous two weeks had been stressful personally and professionally.

Despite his condition, Scarpelli attended the team’s practices on Monday and Tuesday this week and also visited with multiple doctors. He has more appointments scheduled this week, but he is yet to receive a concrete diagnosis of what caused the health scare.

Clarkstown South is scheduled to host Scarsdale at 7 on Friday night in its final regular-season game.

“I’m going to try my best to be there Friday,” Scarpelli said. “Right now, I plan on being at the game.”

1. Ursuline (8-0) – The Koalas enter the final week of the regular season atop the rankings. They won their only match this week over North Rockland to stay undefeated. Ursuline continues to benefit from strong singles play from the trio of Laina Campos, Keira Tobia and Vanessa Ciano.  All three will be players to watch in the upcoming postseason tournaments. Previous ranking: 1

2. Harrison (10-0)

Tennis

Tennis

– The Huskies stayed undefeated this week with wins over Ardsley and Byram Hills. They are one of only three teams in the section – along with Ursuline and Briarcliff – to not suffer a defeat this season. Their unblemished record, however, was almost lost in their match against Byram Hills.  Four of the seven matches went to third set super-tiebreakers with each side winning two of them.  The match came down to the fourth doubles pair of sophomore Julie D’Onofrio and junior Juilia Applebaum who sealed the win for the Huskies with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory. Previous ranking: 2

3. Bronxville (8-1) – The Broncos move into the top 3 this week after defeating Hastings and avenging their only loss of the season to Edgemont. After losing 4-3 two weeks ago, Bronxville was able to turn the tables on the Panthers in another tightly contested match. The fourth doubles pair of sophomore Alexandra Brumbaugh and senior Maryasa Krivitskaya earned the deciding point for the Broncos with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory. Having not lost a match this season, Brumbaugh and Krivitskaya have proven to be one of the top fourth doubles teams in the section. Previous ranking: 4

4. Edgemont (8-1) – The Panthers fall one spot in the rankings this week after losing their first match of the season to Bronxville. After convincing 6-1 victories over Keio and Blind Brook, they lost a close 4-3 match to the Broncos. Edgemont continues to benefit from the strong play of their singles players Ariella Zagorsky, Shruti Kanna and Iris Lin. The trio are entering the final week of the regular season on a hot streak having won all of their matches in the past four contests. Previous ranking: 3

5. Mamaroneck (8-2) – The Tigers round out the top 5 again this week after soundly defeating New Rochelle and Scarsdale. The win over Scarsdale establishes Mamaroneck as the second place team in Conference 1 League B behind top-ranked Ursuline. The Tigers have had a successful season with an 8th grader leading the way at first singles. Juliette Nask has fared admirably in her first season with the team despite facing some of the area’s best players. She adds depth to an already young lineup that still boasts sophomores Alison Zerbib and Katherine Orgielewicz. Previous ranking: 5

6. Rye (6-2) – The Garnets move up one spot to No. 6 this week after dominating wins over Ardsley and Pelham.  Rye continues to see strong play from its second doubles team of sophomores Stephanie Rodilosso and Laura Jaramillo.  After losing their first two matches of the year, the pair have rattled off six consecutive victories.  They will look to continue their success as a showdown with Byram Hills looms next week to establish the second place team behind second-ranked Harrison in Conference 2 League C.  Rye won the first time these two ranked teams met by a close 4-3 margin. Previous ranking: 7

7. Byram Hills (5-4) –  The Bobcats re-enter the rankings this week after beating ninth-ranked Horace Greeley and coming up just short against second-ranked Harrison.  They have come closer than anyone to handing Harrison its first loss of the season.  The Huskies were able to eke out a 4-3 win both times these two teams played each other, but most of the matches were decided by third set super-tiebreakers.  Junior Devon Wolfe has been a bright spot for the Bobcats this season as she has been successful at both third singles and first doubles.  Byram Hills looks to turn the tables on seventh-ranked Rye this week when the two meet on 10/5 to determine the second place team in Conference 2 League C behind Harrison. Previous ranking: NR

8. Scarsdale (6-6) – The Raiders fall two spots in the rankings this week to No. 8 after losing to Mamaroneck 5-2.  A win over Suffern last Friday, however, establishes Scarsdale as the third place team in Conference 1 League B behind Ursuline and Mamaroneck.  When healthy, the Raiders can still compete with anyone.  First singles player, senior Ashley Granieri, is a player to watch in the upcoming postseason tournaments. Previous ranking: 6

9. Horace Greeley (7-2) – The Quakers drop one spot in the rankings this week to No. 9.  They rebounded from a 5-2 defeat to Byram Hills with a win over league rival Fox Lane 4-3. The win over the Foxes puts Greeley atop the Conference 1 League A standings. An upcoming match with Yorktown this week will determine the league champion. Junior Carly Levitz and sophomore Chloe Zilkha have given the Quakers a strong one-two punch at first and second singles this season. Previous ranking: 8

T-10.Fox Lane (5-2) – The Foxes stay in the rankings at No. 10 despite losing their only match this week to Horace Greeley. They came up just short, losing 4-3 to the Quakers. Ninth grader Leah Tuluca continues to establish herself as one of the top third singles players in the section.  Fox Lane will look to rebound when they finish their match with Yorktown next week. Currently, the Foxes lead 3-2 in a match that was called for darkness two weeks ago. A win will give the Foxes a top 2 finish in the Conference 1 League A standings.  Previous ranking: 9

T-10.Yorktown (7-3) – The Huskers earned a 5-2 victory over Ketcham this week. Until the match between Fox Lane and Yorktown is completed, however, it is still too difficult to separate them in the rankings. Sophomore Caitlyn Ferrante continues to show why she is an early favorite in the upcoming postseason tournaments. But Ferrante is not the only one that deserves credit for Yorktown’s success this season.  Sophomore Alessia Sigillo at second singles, senior Anisha Duvvi at third singles, and junior Jessie Gerdis at first doubles continue to make positive contributions to the team. This week, Yorktown will play Horace Greeley and finish their match with Fox Lane, which will determine who wins the Conference 1 League A title. Previous ranking: 9

T-10.Briarcliff (12-0) – The Bears picked up four more wins this week versus Irvington, North Salem, Pleasantville and Croton.  Briarcliff still has yet to lose a single match at any lineup position. That is an achievement that deserves recognition. It is still, however, difficult to determine where the Bears should be ranked when compared to teams that play in the more challenging 3-singles/4 doubles division. While they continue to dominate the 3-singles/2 doubles division, one can only speculate how they would fare against the other teams on this list. Singles players Rebecca Lim and Loren Haukova would give the Bears an edge against any team at first and second singles. The question is whether Briarcliff could win two out of the remaining five lineup positions. Previous ranking: 10

On the bubble:  John Jay Cross River (7-3), Suffern (8-3)

Coaches polled: Ted Garber (Bronxville), Mark Canno (Rye Neck), Quan Huynh (Harrison), Katie Feinstein (Edgemont), and Roger Dayer (Yorktown).

SUFFERN – The energy was understandably low, but there was no shortage of enthusiasm when the horn finally sounded.

The celebration was a long time in coming.

Liz Ellsworth gave Suffern a 1-0 win over North Rockland on Wednesday, scoring in overtime after the longtime rivals went back and forth without a lot of clean looks at an open net.

It was the first Mounties win in the series in eight seasons.

Kyra Greenbaum delivered the setup, sending the ball across the box in traffic after drawing a pair of defenders with three minutes to go in the first of two mandatory overtimes.

“I was just praying somebody would be there to finish,” she said.

Ellsworth had it all the way.

“I saw Kyra coming down the line and knew she was going to cross the ball, I just felt it,” she said. “I had to cut off the goalie and the defender and when I saw it slip through the goalie’s hands, I had to compose myself and finish.”

Suffern was extremely composed the rest of the way and kept the Red Raiders in chase mode.

“We wanted this one very badly,” Greenbaum added. “This is our year. We just had to keep everything together. I’ve been on varsity since freshman year and this is the first time we’ve ever beaten them, so as a senior, it’s the best gift ever.”

Players of the game: Jackie Santangelo and Abby Bosco were standouts on the defensive end, holding it all together for 87 minutes until Greenbaum and Ellsworth got Suffern on the board.

“They’ve learned how to defend this year,” Mounties coach Phil Madonia said. “We started off letting in a lot of goals, but in the last six games we’ve let in two goals.”

Turning point: After struggling to make something happen in the overtime, Allie Goldstein narrowly missed Tatiana Cruz with a crossing pass through heavy traffic, but Suffern maintained the intensity, kept the ball forward and converted some 40 seconds later.

Stat line: Cassidy Rykowski made seven saves for the Mounties, including a diving stop in the second overtime. Jenna Braunagel made three saves for North Rockland.

Quotable: “We’re not anticipating very well,” Red Raiders coach Pete McGovern said. “We didn’t deserve to lose this. I’m not saying we deserved to win it, but we had our chances. The problem is we’re so young up top we’re going to be inconsistent. Today I was happy with the way we played, we’re going to the goal harder, we just have to work on improving our anticipation. If we can do that, we can be very dangerous going forward.”
