Below are the playoff standings for Section 1 football. The standings have only been calculated for Classes AA, A and B because all Class C teams (Woodlands, Dobbs Ferry, Rye Neck, Bronxville) and Class D teams (Tuckahoe, Haldane) will qualify for the postseason.

The formula used to calculate the Class AA standings has changed. Both the Class AA formula and the Class A/B formula are explained below. To see all numbers used in the calculations, click on the link at the bottom to view the Google document.

New Rochelle running back Jared Baron (6) runs past the Mount Vernon defense during a Section 1, Class AA football game between New Rochelle and Mount Vernon at New Rochelle High School on Sept. 10th, 2016. New Rochelle won 40-6.

Class AA

— Each team is awarded power points to determine its position in the standings. They are calculated by using the following…

Quality Points: 6 points per win, 0 points per loss

Residual Points: for wins, 3 points for each of their opponents’ wins, 0 points for each of their opponents’ losses; for losses, 1 point for each of their opponents’ wins against other teams, 0 points for each of their opponents’ losses against other teams

Preseason Power Ranking Points: 4 points for playing teams ranked 1-5, 3 points for teams ranked 6-10, 2 points for teams ranked 11-15, and 1 point for teams ranked 16-20

Let’s use Arlington as an example. Arlington is 5-0, so it has earned 30 quality points. Arlington will have earned 16 Preseason Power Ranking Points for playing No. 2 John Jay (4 points), No. 7 Mahopac (3), No. 8 Ketcham (3), No. 9 Carmel (3), No. 15 Fox Lane (2) and No. 20 Spring Valley (1). To date, Arlington has earned 42 residual points for John Jay (4 wins x 3), Mahopac (2 x 3), Ketcham (1 x 3), Carmel (3 x 3) and Spring Valley (4 x 3).

Important note: The number of residual points earned can change drastically this weekend based on which teams win in Week 6 and how Arlington fares against Fox Lane.

To calculate Arlington’s total power points, add its Quality Points (30), Residual Points (42) and Preseason Ranking Points (16), which equals 88.

Class A and B

— The Class A and B playoff standings will be calculated using the same formula as in years past. To determine a team’s index, add that team’s winning percentage to the winning percentages of the teams it beat and subtract the losing percentage of the teams it lost to. That number is then multiplied by a unique multiplier that is based on each team’s preseason ranking to produce the final playoff index.

Let’s use Rye as an example. Rye’s record is 4-1, giving it a winning percentage of 0.8. Rye beat Beacon (0.4 winning percentage), Harrison (0.6), Lourdes (0.6) and Eastchester (0.6) and lost to Brewster (0.0 losing percentage). That total equals 0.8 + 0.4 + 0.6 + 0.6 + 0.6 – 0.0. Based on its strength of schedule, Rye’s multiplier was determined to by 9.83. It’s playoff index equals 3.0 x 9.83 = 29.49.

The Class A regular season will end on Saturday, Oct. 8. The top 16 teams will qualify for the qualifying round the following week. The eight winners in that round will be reseeded based on the same playoff indexes calculated at the end of the regular season.

Bronxville celebrates after a first-half goal from Alex Doukas during a Section 1 girls soccer game between Bronxville and Irvington at Bronxville High School on Thursday, Oct. 6th, 2016. Bronxville won 4-3.

BRONXVILLE – Earning career win No. 400 wasn’t easy for Bronxville head coach Don Cupertino, especially with his team going up against Zoe Maxwell and Irvington.

The game came down to the wire. In the 78th minute, tied at three, Alex Doukas dribbled the ball into the box and blasted it past the keeper for her third goal of the game to give Bronxville the lead.

Immediately after that goal, Irvington’s Maxwell, who had all of her team’s goals, dribbled past three defenders and made a bid to tie the score, but just missed the net off the right post.

Bronxville would hang on for the 4-3 win and Cupertino’s milestone.

The Broncos celebrated the victory by giving their coach a Gatorade bath.

“We’re really happy to get this win for coach, it showed a lot of heart,”  Bronxville midfielder Rachael Peacock said. “We didn’t play our best game but we really started working together better in the second half.”

“It’s pretty cool; that’s a lot of wins. I guess I’ve just been here a long time,” Cupertino said.

The coach didn’t want too much credit for his success.

“It’s all about my players, they’re the ones who are winning games, I just place them out on the field,” Cupertino said “Some of these girls have been with me for a lot of wins. Mason Warble started on the team as an eighth-grader, so she gets credit for at least 100 of them.”

With several talented young players like eighth-grader Doukas, Cupertino is not done winning games yet.

“Our young players have been really terrific this year, they’ve really stepped up,” Cupertino said.

Player of the game: Doukas scored three goals for the Broncos, including the game-winner. She was an offensive threat every time she touched the ball.

Turning point:  Irvington’s Zoe Maxwell had a chance to tie the score in the last minute. She dribbled past most of the Broncos’ defense and had a chance on goal. Bronxville keeper Maddie Coyne angled her off and forced her to take a tough shot that missed the net along the right side.

Stat line: Irvington’s Zoe Maxwell had three goals, and Rebekah Rosman made 10 saves. Bronxville’s Doukas had three goals, Natalie Kister added one for the Broncos, and Maddie Coyne made eight saves.

Quotable: “It was great to pull that win out at the end. Irvington really showed up to play. Zoe Maxwell really tore us apart, she’s a great player,” Cupertino said.

In battle of undefeated teams, Nyack sweeps Tappan Zee

NYACK – Minutes before their school day was set to begin Thursday morning, Maya Owens, Brenna Abplanalp, Ali Wanamaker, and Nicole Andreotti each received the same text message at 7:26 a.m.

Nyack celebrates after defeatingTappan Zee in three straight games during a varsity volleyball match at Nyack High School Oct. 6, 2016. Nyack defeated Tappan Zee 25-12; 25-19; 25-22.

Nyack celebrates after defeatingTappan Zee in three straight games during a varsity volleyball match at Nyack High School Oct. 6, 2016. Nyack defeated Tappan Zee 25-12; 25-19; 25-22.

“Today is a game to enjoy each other and play for one another, do not let the situation or moment become too big, do all the little things that have gotten you to this point, and don’t shy back from being you. The work is done at practice now is time to go out there and have fun with our family. NYACK VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 15 STRONG.”

The message came from Nyack volleyball head coach Christian Collazo, who has made a habit of sending motivational texts to his quartet of captains in the morning. Wednesday’s came in at 6:47 a.m. Tuesday’s was sent at 6:32 a.m. Monday’s was at 7:40 a.m.

The Indians showed few nerves against their league foes, sweeping Tappan Zee 25-12, 25-19, 25-22 at Nyack High School in a battle between two of the four remaining undefeated teams in Section 1.

NYACK: Nyack meets season wins goal at Pearl River

PREVIEW: After years in the dark, Nyack is ready (and expected) to win

RANKINGS: Unbeaten Tappan Zee debuts in Top 10

“It says that we don’t give up, and that we’re going to fight for each other every game and every step of the way,” Nyack libero Lila Shaw said of the win.

Collazo has some familiarity with Tappan Zee, coaching Dutchies seniors Danielle Kowalchuk and Hailey McCloskey for travel ball. Kowalchuk came up to hug Collazo after the match.

Tappan Zee (9-1) eliminated Nyack (10-0) in the semifinals of the Scarsdale tournament on Sept. 17, but tournament performances do not affect a team’s record. Much like that best-of-three contest three weeks ago, Thursday featured two unrelenting teams.

Abplanalp nearly channeled Derek Jeter in diving into the crowd for a ball. Tappan Zee was tied with Nyack at 17-17 in the second set and nearly came back to tie the third set.

“We have grit, man, we really do. I’ve been really blessed,” said Collazo, who has led Nyack to a 40-8 mark over the last three seasons after it went 5-41 during the previous three. “I’ve talked to a lot of coaches within my district and that’s one of the things they’ll never question about my team, how hard we play and how much grit we have.

“It’s special, because I don’t think it’s something you can develop. I think it’s something that you’re kind of born with.”

Down by 3 at the half, Fox Lane rallies to tie John Jay

CROSS RIVER – If ever a game had two very distinct halves, it was Thursday’s Fox Lane-John Jay field hockey matchup.

Maybe it wasn’t quite the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest. But Fox Lane at least climbed out of a very deep well, rallying from three goals down at the half to tie the host Indians 3-3.

“John Jay has always been our rival,” said sophomore forward Olivia Dey, whose goal off a corner cut the Indians’ lead to 3-2. “At halftime, we said, ‘We’re not going to let them stomp all over us.’ “

Kayla Gallagher, who scored twice, said the Fox Lane halftime discussion centered on playing with “energy, intensity and urgency.”

John Jay’s Tyman Cronin, left, and Fox Lane’s Emma Campbell battle for ball control during their game at John Jay High School in Cross River on Thursday. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.

John Jay (5-5-1), whose play this season has sometimes been brilliant and sometimes underwhelming, got its three-goal lead with Rosie Ceisler’s deflection tally sandwiched between two Anna Prusko goals.

Those players continued to play well, but from the time Gallagher scored just 29 seconds into the second half, Fox Lane had most of the momentum.

Contrasting her team’s recent one-goal loss to Rye, one of the best teams in the section, to Thursday’s tie, Prusco said her team wasn’t playing “on edge” against Fox Lane.

“We psych ourselves up and are excited for the hard games,” Prusco said. “We strive to be the underdog that gets the upset.”

Fox Lane is 7-2-1, its only losses coming against powerhouses Mamaroneck and Scarsdale.

Player of the game: While there were multiple stars, including Dey, whose hustle landed her on the turf multiple times, game honors went to Gallagher.

Turning point: Gallagher’s unassisted goal with 29:31 left changed the game’s entire complexion.

“It was huge,” Fox Lane coach Kim Gigante said. “You just need that momentum. One good thing is that spark that lights that fire: ‘We can do this.’ It gave them the momentum, the will and the hope.”

Stat line: Fox Lane’s three goals all occurred in little more than eight minutes. Dey’s was assisted by Isabell Abt and Gallagher scored with Bridget Connors getting the assist at 21:22 after a terrific breakout by Paige Ludl.

Prusko had opened the scoring with 28:43 left in the first half off a corner and Tyman Cronin assist. Ceisler’s deflection of a Paige Lombardi shot occurred at 24:36. Prusko scored off a Lee Neuberger feed with 6:30 left in the first half.

Fox Lane goalie Grace Kiernan had six saves. John Jay goalie Haley Martinsen had five saves.

Quotables: “We usually get one goal and it picks us up for the whole game. That’s what happened today,” Gallagher said.

“(With a three-goal deficit,) it’s really easy for a team to shut down mentally,” Gigante said. “I’m really proud of how they were able to fire up and fire back.”

Rye head coach Geri Jones was right to invite me to Thursday’s bout against Ardsley, which ended in a five-game win for the Garnets, but it’s impossible to turn down a match between two undefeated teams (Tappan Zee-Nyack). Three undefeated teams now remain in the section following Nyack’s sweep: Panas, Pawling, and Nyack. You can catch my game story below.

In a nice little bit of personal news, I’ll be guest lecturing at Iona College on Friday at 10 a.m. I have not been assigned to football, so I’ll likely be swinging by a volleyball match in the afternoon after working on my column in-between the two.

Lloyd embraces new role as Suffern keeps winning

SPRING VALLEY – Zac Lloyd’s name hasn’t been popping up on the stat sheet quite as often as it did last year, but that’s just fine with him.

Suffern's Zac Lloyd (14) and Spring Valley's Ahmed Aly (15) battles for control of the ball during boys soccer at Spring Valley High School on Oct. 6, 2016.

Suffern’s Zac Lloyd (14) and Spring Valley’s Ahmed Aly (15) battles for control of the ball during boys soccer at Spring Valley High School on Oct. 6, 2016.

Suffern’s star senior was the top returning goal-scorer in Rockland County heading into this season, which made him the focal point of opposing defenses. The Mounties began with losses in two of their first three games, prompting coach Bob Walkley to shift Lloyd from his natural forward position into the midfield.

Suffern hasn’t lost in nine games since the change was made, including Thursday’s 1-0 win over Spring Valley in a game which further tightened the Mounties’ grip on a league title.

“I was being man-marked in the beginning of the season and we couldn’t get many chances,” Lloyd said. “I moved back to center defensive mid and I like playing back there. It’s getting us wins, so it doesn’t matter to me.”

In his new role, Lloyd has been able to make his mark on the defensive end while also contributing on offense. Last year, his main responsibility was to score the goals, but now he’s taking Suffern’s set pieces and finding his teammates.

In the 52nd minute, Lloyd sent a long free kick into the Spring Valley box and Sebastian Rojas leapt over the defense to score the lone goal with his head. It was Lloyd’s seventh assist of the season to go along with five goals.

“I saw the keeper and I saw that no one was at the front post, so I just touched the ball in,” Rojas said. “(Lloyd) put it in a good spot. That one goal changed the game.”

Player of the game: Sebastian Rojas, Suffern — After missing the first month of the season due to injury, the senior returned last week and has provided a big lift. With one of the Mounties’ leading scorers, Paul Prenaj, exiting the game with concussion-like symptoms, Rojas helped fill the void.

Turning point: A few minutes after Prenaj stumbled off of the field after banging heads with Spring Valley’s Samy Raymond, Lloyd and Rojas hooked up for the winning goal to keep Suffern undefeated in league play.

“We have a lot of small guys, but they’re aggressive and they like to get up for the headers,” Lloyd said.

Stat line: Suffern (8-2-2) — Rojas scored on an assist from Lloyd and Matt Stuttman made seven saves for the shutout. The Mounties took 18 shots. Spring Valley (4-4-3) — Anderson Italien made 10 saves and the Tigers took 13 shots.

Quotable: “We weren’t able to finish on them in the last game, so I’m really happy,” said Lloyd, referring to 0-0 tie against Spring Valley in their first meeting on Sept. 22. “They’ve been really aggressive with us and been our big opponent in the league this year.”

Not a normal week for Rye football team

Rye head coach Dino Garr believes his team is refocused following a rare loss in the regular season at Brewster.

Rye head coach Dino Garr believes his team is refocused following a rare loss in the regular season at Brewster.

The losses have been few and far between in recent years, so this was not a typical week for Rye.

It began with an impromptu huddle while Brewster was celebrating an 11-7 win. Then came the silent bus ride home. The highs and lows of a physical game were highlighted on film the following day.

The mood improved only slightly over the long weekend.

“It’s a very sobering experience,” senior defensive lineman and captain Miles Giordano said. “It hits you hard. The main thing is, you have to learn. You have to make sure you gain something. You have to gain the knowledge and experience to win the next game.”

Watching replays of the mistakes was difficult.

“They had an opportunity to see what they did right, what they did wrong,” longtime Garnets coach Dino Garr said. “And then we moved on. That game is over with. Hen Hud is a very good football team and we had to get ready. We couldn’t practice until Tuesday, so we really had three days off. In some ways, that was a good thing because it gave a few players a chance to get over the bumps and bruises. Then we had three days of good practice.”

Once again, the captains spelled out the agenda.

“We talked to the team a lot after the Brewster game,” Giordano said. “And this week before we started practice we told everyone, ‘No more clowning around. No more talking on the side. Listen. Focus.’ I really think that helped. All the captains were on board, and the team wants to win just as much as we do. Everyone knows what is at stake. We all want to go back to playing like the undefeated Rye Garnets.”

The response was immediate.

Hen Hud is a team with more than just potential. The Sailors come into Friday’s game with a 3-2 record, and were stride for stride with Brewster last month before falling. Every high school player keeps an eye on the scoreboard.

Knowing that another misstep could be costly, Rye was extra meticulous this week in practice.

“Last year we only had one loss and it was a big one at the end of the season,” Garr said. “I guess if you have to lose one, make it early.”

The goal is to make last week a turning point.

“You can’t be a winner without losing a few times,” Giordano said. “It’s something you have to learn from and put aside.”

The Garnets have only lost one regular-season game in the last two seasons.

Dolphin, Murphy score as Pearl River tops Sleepy Hollow

$
0
0

PEARL RIVER – It was the Senior Recognition Game at Pearl River High Friday, but Sleepy Hollow goalie Marissa Fortugno, a senior herself, wasn’t showing much appreciation for the Pirates’ seniors.

Fortugno was stoning her counterparts.

Trailing by a goal, the Pirates’ Michaela Murphy stole the ball, dodged a Headless Horsemen defender and went in 1-on-0 on Fortugno only to be stopped with 26:42 left in the second half.

A few minutes later, a steal by sophomore Breanne Dolphin and feed to Elizabeth Gilbride and Murphy led to a Pirates corner, but Gabrielle Domonico, who had a nice defensive game, stopped a drive before it even reached Fortugno.

But there was a limit to how much bend Sleepy Hollow had before it broke.

Dolphin, falling a bit to her right, uncorked a shot over Fortugno’s left shoulder to knot the score with 22:13 to play. Murphy then gathered the ball on a second effort in front of the net and beat Fortugna to her left exactly 11 minutes later as Pearl River won its third game of the season, 2-1.

“We have a list of goals and one of them was we wanted to win our Senior Recognition Game,” Murphy said.

“We were just telling them, ‘Take shots on goal. Take shots on goal. Take shots on goal’ and to have confidence in themselves,” Pearl River co-coach Tracey Miller said.

Fortugno, who was credited with 10 saves, said Pearl River changed in the second half, while her team seemed to become fatigued.

“I think we played really well in the first half,” she said. “We did a really good job spreading the ball and made really good decisions. Their coach must have given a really good (halftime) pep talk. They came back swinging. They were ramped.”

Player of the game: Dolphin, who was credited with the assist on Murphy’s goal and whose speed kept Sleepy Hollow on its heels, got the golden ball for being the Pirates’ player of the game. But Murphy’s bulldog intensity and multiple shots made her co-owner of that label.

A Murphy-to-Meghan Dillane feed led to Dolphin’s goal as the ball found her stick in traffic deep in the circle.

Turning point: That goal was the game-changer.

Stat line: Headless Horseman Molly Brennan gave her squad its 1-0 lead with 23:02 left in the first half off a corner and feed from Kali D’Angostinis.

Two of Fortugno’s saves came when she stopped a Murphy drive, then took Gilbride’s one-timer off the rebound in her mid-section with 9:45 left.

Pearl River had 10 corners to Sleepy Hollow’s seven.

Pirates netminder Kerry Gettler had only one save, facing just two shots.

Quotables: “Defensively, we’re really good at layering, so it’s almost like building a wall,” said Murphy, whose team is 3-4-4.

Greeley offense comes alive in second half for 4-0 win

The Horace Greeley and Yorktown girls soccer teams battled to a scoreless tie at halftime of their game on Friday. By the time the final whistle blew the Quakers had picked up a 4-0 victory.

Scout Schultz began the barrage in the 44th minute of play by volleying a ball into the right corner of the net off a corner kick.

Three minutes later Greeley was awarded a free kick from just outside the box. Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky sent a scorcher toward the keeper, who deflected it to Olivia Bonadies, who knocked it in.

“I really felt we gained composure in the second half,” Greeley coach Erin Tracy said. “We had a lot more going forward offensively, which was really good because scoring goals has been a problem for us.”

Greeley’s strong performance was fueled by their defense, particularly on Yorktown’s Alyssa Francese.

“We we’re able to shut down number seven (Francese), which was one of our goals going into the game,” Tracy said. “Our girls did a fantastic job individually when they were marking her.”

Yorktown certainly noticed the attention that Greeley gave Francese.

“I have to give credit to them,” Yorktown coach Rich Armstrong said. “They were able to mark Alyssa really well, and limit her opportunities.”

The loss to Greeley hurts Yorktown’s league title chances, but the Huskers remained upbeat.

“Our goal entering the season was to win the league. It was a tough loss today, but our season’s not over,” Armstrong said. “We still feel we can compete with anyone. We’re going to work really hard our last five games to earn a good playoff seed.”

Greeley will look to build on this win as it heads toward the playoffs.

“This will give us a lot of momentum going forward,” Tracy said. “Hopefully we can keep scoring this many goals in our last few games.”

Player of the game: Scout Schultz not only scored the first goal for Greeley, but she was a crucial part of the offense all game.

Turning point: After Greeley’s second goal Francese had an excellent opportunity to score. The ball was in the air between Francese and keeper Ashley Rosenberg, but Rosenberg lunged forward and punched the ball away from the box to save the goal.

Name: Jack Samett

Tappan Zee boys soccer's Jack Samett is the week's Journal News Rockland-Scholar Athlete of the Week

Tappan Zee boys soccer’s Jack Samett is the week’s Journal News Rockland-Scholar Athlete of the Week

School: Tappan Zee High School

Class: Senior

Sport: Boys soccer

Athletic accomplishments: Samett, who plays center defense for the Dutchmen, had four goals and two assists this season through Thursday. The three-year starter scored the game-tying goal on Sept. 24 against Pearl River to force overtime. He’s the captain of the team this season. Last year, he was Journal News All-County honorable mention. Samett helped the Dutchmen reach their first Section 1 title game in program history last season.

Academic accomplishments: Samett currently has a 100 average. He’s looking at North Carolina, Virginia, Cornell, and Michigan as possible colleges. He’s in the top 20 percent of the senior class. He’s taken all honors and five AP courses. He’s a member of the National Honor Society and History and Spanish honor societies. Samett’s been on the Exceptional Honors every quarter since middle school.

School and community involvement: Samett is the treasurer for the Spanish Honor Society. He’s the president of DECA. He’s worked with his mother (Cynthia McMurtie) at the Center for Safety and Change in New City.

Getting to know Jack Samett

The Journal News: How’s the boys soccer season going so far?

Jack Samett: I think it’s going pretty well. I’m scoring a lot more than I usually do but I’m really focused on my defense, trying to lock it down while the offense does what it can.

TJN: Why did you want to play soccer?

JS: When I was a little kid, I liked to run around a lot. I was a very energetic kid. Watching the World Cup on TV also helped.

TJN: How long have you been playing defense?

JS: I wasn’t playing on the defensive side of the ball until I got moved up to varsity. On JV and modified, I was the center midfielder. I was playing upfront last year as well.

TJN: After getting to the Section 1 title game a year ago, how much would it mean to help this team finish what you started?

JS: I think it’s the number one goal for not only all the seniors but for the rest of the team. Winning the league is one thing, but winning sections is a whole other level especially for our school who hadn’t won one (in soccer) before. To win it would be the best way we could go out.

TJN: What are you looking for when you are looking at colleges?

JS: I plan on majoring in business. All of those schools have great business programs. I like big schools and not all of them but most of them are big sports schools, so that plays a big role in that.

TJN: Will you continue playing soccer for whichever school you go to?

JS: I don’t think I’m playing a varsity team for college. If I play, it’ll be intramural or on a club team.

TJN: Why study business and what aspect of business do you want to focus on?

JS: Finance. I’ve always been interested in business. It’s something that intrigues me. My dad works in finance so it was something I grew up on. Math was also my strongest subject.

TJN: What’s been your most memorable community service work?

JS: One of the things I like to do community service-wise is I coach a recreational basketball league in one of the churches near me. I really enjoy doing that.

TJN: Why does winning the Rockland Scholar-Athlete mean so much to you?

JS: I think it’s really important, balancing school and sports. Every coach says it but to me it’s of special importance. I have heavy course loads and I’m really passionate about soccer. It’s really important to balance that out.

The Journal News Rockland Scholar-Athlete of the Week program honors students for their academic, athletic and community achievements. Each week a winner is selected from nominees submitted by athletic directors. Only seniors can be nominated, and the award can be won only once. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Monday. The presenting sponsor for The Journal News Rockland Scholar-Athlete program is Gary Goldberg Financial Services.

This time, Clarkstown South takes advantage of mistakes

WEST NYACK – For the second straight week, Clarkstown South’s defense proved opportunistic. This time, however, the Vikings more than took advantage.

The defense forced three early turnovers and four for the game, which resulted in a key 31-14 victory over visiting Scarsdale in a game between Class AA hopefuls.

“It really stopped the momentum for the other team,” said junior Will Longing, who had an interception and two fumble recoveries. “No matter where they were on the field, when we get the ball back we know we can score at any time. Our offense getting the ball back is key.”

Clarkstown South hadn’t taken nearly enough advantage last week against unbeaten New Rochelle when it forced six turnovers. The Huguenots overcame the mistakes to win 39-18. The Vikings ensured that didn’t happen again against Scarsdale, which entered the game with just one loss and having posted two straight impressive wins.

The Raiders’ issues began on the opening drive. Nick Leone scooped up a loose ball on the kickoff and returned it 99 yards to the end zone, but it was called back to the 13 because of a penalty. Robert Rolfe’s helmet popped off an ensuing second-and-goal. By rule, Rolfe had to sit out the next play. The normal starter, Barry Klein, entered with his broken left wrist protected by a brace. He and Leone fumbled the exchange and the Vikings recovered.

After two more early fumbles, Scarsdale pulled even 7-7. It had a chance for more with 31 seconds left in the half. Facing a fourth-and-11 at the Vikings’ 32, Robert Rolfe was sacked for a 14-yard loss by Patrick Naughton. South set up strong-legged kicker Michael Tagaris, who boomed a 41-yard field goal at the buzzer to give the Vikings a 10-7 cushion at halftime.

They led just 17-14 in the fourth quarter when senior Kyle Samuels picked up a key fourth-and-3. Three plays later, senior Matt Jung hit a wide open Samuels down the middle for a 42-yard touchdown.

“That was the knife. That sealed the win for us,” Samuels said. “They were done after that. They couldn’t come back.”

After some uncertainty this week, Clarkstown South coach Mike Scarpelli was on the sideline for the game. Scarpelli had a health scare last week and still has not learned the cause, but he coached the game without incident.

Player of the game: Will Longing, Clarkstown South. Longing scored three turnovers, including an interception at the 1 in the third quarter that he returned 61 yards to set up a touchdown drive.

Stat line: Clarkstown South (5-1) — Samuels rushed for 67 yards, including the clinching 53-yard touchdown. He also caught five passes for 91 yards … Jung finished 19 for 28 for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Mistretta caught eight passes for 136 yards and two scores. Scarsdale (4-2) — Rolfe threw for 109 yards and Klein came in to complete a 55-yarder to Ezekiah Bacchus. Thomas Jacobson caught four passes for 109 yards.

Ardsley hangs on for a wild win at Valhalla

Quarterback Julian McGarvey looks to pass for Ardsley in a 14-7 win against Valhalla Friday night.

Quarterback Julian McGarvey looks to pass for Ardsley in a 14-7 win against Valhalla Friday night.

VALHALLA – It was going to take much more than one interception to deter Ardsley quarterback Julian McGarvey.

The junior signal-caller was picked off in the end zone on the Panthers’ opening drive against Valhalla on Friday night in what he called a “must-win” game, but he just kept chucking it.

“I trust my arm, no matter what,” McGarvey said. “I feel like I’m one of the best quarterbacks in the section, even though it’s Class B football. I feel like I can throw the rock to anybody anywhere, and my coach (Dan DiFalco) has nothing but confidence in me. Our plan in the first half was to throw the ball as much as we could and air it out.”

Later in the first half, McGarvey found Ricky Chenard for a highlight-reel touchdown catch, and he was poised throughout the second half — both with his arm and with his legs.

Ardsley has had some heartbreaking losses against the best teams in Class B so far this season — namely Westlake, Pleasantville and Nanuet — but it was different this time around. The Panthers escaped with a crucial 14-7 win after Brett Loccisano put them up for good with a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

“Whenever we’re under the lights, we always feel like we’ve got a chip on our shoulder,” Chenard said. “We’re out here for a reason, and we just come to play. With the way the season has been going, we knew we had to step it up — and tonight, we did.”

The Vikings scored their only touchdown on the opening drive, with quarterback Ralph Gonzalez III running for a 1-yard score after he converted on fourth-and-11 with a 25-yard pass to Luke Ursillo.

Ardsley tied it just before halftime when McGarvey lofted a pass to the corner of the end zone for Chenard, who somehow managed to catch it off of a deflection and stay in bounds.

“We called a timeout, and coach said, ‘You’re running a stop-and-go, and we’re throwing you the ball,’ ” Chenard said. “I knew I had to make a play on it.”

Player of the game: Julian McGarvey, Ardsley — The junior completed 11 of 19 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 50. His biggest moment came on a fourth-and-four run in which he gained 9 yards, setting up Loccisano’s go-ahead touchdown with 7:24 to play.

Valhalla’s Mike Ferrara gets outside the Ardsley defense during Friday night’s game.

Turning point: On first-and-goal with the score tied 7-7 late in the third quarter, Ardsley fumbled and Valhalla’s Evan Parker recovered. But three players later, the Vikings had a fumble of their own and the Panthers jumped on it to take the ball right back.

Quotable: “That was probably the funnest football game I’ve ever played in,” McGarvey said. “There’s nothing better than Friday night lights— coming onto somebody else’s field and ruining their Friday night game. We wanted a big game, we wanted to make noise, and that’s exactly what we did.”

Nick Cunningham pulls the rug out from under Rye in stunner

$

RYE – Nick Cunningham is probably not the best person to ask for details about the most unlikely comeback of the season.

“It’s all just a blur,” Hen Hud’s senior quarterback said.

Cunningham threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Alan Porter-Jackson with 1:35 left, recovered an onside kick, threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Grullon with 33.1 seconds to go and gave the Sailors a memorable 50-49 win over Rye on Friday when he connected again with Grullon on a two-point conversion after running all over town hoping to buy time.

It was all eye-popping.

The Garnets were sitting on a 49-28 lead and shuttling in backups with six minutes to play.

“I don’t even know where to start, that was amazing,” Cunningham said. “I need to thank every player on this team that didn’t quit after I played the worst half of my life. Every single one of them kept their head in the game, their heart and soul in this game and we came back and won.”

Cunningham also scored on a 2-yard plunge with 3:57 to play, getting Hen Hud within 49-34.

Rye did not go back to the first-string offense, and has now dropped two in a row.

It was fourth-and-15 when Cunningham saw Grullon a step ahead of the defense on the final touchdown.

“Honestly, all I was thinking on that one was, ‘I have to catch this ball or the game is over,’ ” the sophomore running back said. “That had to be my touchdown no matter what.”

The conversion was a circus play with Cunningham scrambling for 8-10 seconds.

“It felt like an eternity back there,” he said. “I’m running in circles just hoping that somebody gets open because I’m not the fastest guy out here. I saw a flash. I still don’t know who caught the ball.”

The game wasn’t over.

T.J. Lavelle drove Rye into the red zone, connecting with Matt Bruno on a long pass to give the Garnets life, but a tipped ball in the end zone was snagged by Porter-Jackson to end the drama.

Player of the game: Cunningham completed 21 of 43 passes for 403 yards and six touchdowns.

Turning point: After he threw a conversion to Porter-Jackson to get the Sailors within 49-42, Cunningham kicked off, chased the ball 10 yards and landed on the onside attempt, beating a trio of Rye players.

Stat line: Cunningham also threw four interceptions, three of them before halftime. … He threw for 242 yards after the intermission. …. Cunningham and Marquan Anderson connected for a 98-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter after the Garnets fumbled the ball away near the goal line.

Quotable: There was no doubt Hen Hud was going for two after the last touchdown. “Absolutely,” Mike Lynch said. “We’ve seen what Rye can do on offense. We didn’t want to risk it. We knew if we got the shot we were going to take it and Nicky just made a great play. That’s not how we drew it up, but he is such a competitor.”
