Time is running short and we have a number of teams squeezing in games.

All four of the Section 1 contests are good matchups. Keep an eye on Rye, which hasn’t lost a game in three weeks. It will be interesting to see if Yorktown can Somers a run.

I’m off today, but will have the phone handy so tag me @hoopsmbd with any scores and I’ll pass them along.

The week ahead in volleyball: Oct. 10-16

We’ve got another shortened week ahead of us, so things will be pretty quiet here on Tuesday and Wednesday. Things will pick up Thursday, when I’ll be at Hen Hud-Yorktown. Catch up on what you missed last week and see what’s coming up this week!

What you missed:

Nyack volleyball libero Lila Shaw (6) must wear a different jersey than her teammates due to her position. September 24, 2016.

Nyack volleyball libero Lila Shaw (6) must wear a different jersey than her teammates due to her position. September 24, 2016.

Column: Liberos a confusing, underrated position

What: I’ve had the pleasure of covering some exceptional liberos in my six years on the beat — from Caitlyn Zimmerman, to Arielle Misrok, to Lindsay Pelaccio, to Theresa Swertfager, to Melissa Tringali, to Sabrina Patriciello, and so many more. I didn’t understand the position early on, and I never appreciated how valuable a strong libero is to a team. I decided to rectify that this week, with a column solely dedicated to “those players who wear different color jerseys.” This column ran in the paper on Monday, Oct. 10.

Volleyball rankings: League foes Rye, Ardsley debut in Top 10

What: Rye and Ardsley move into the Top 10 this week for the first time all season, knocking out Tappan Zee and Scarsdale, who move to the bubble. This was posted to the blog Sunday and ran in the paper on Monday, Oct. 10.

Player of the week (Oct. 9): Mychael Vernon, Ossining

What: Ossining freshman outside hitter Mychael Vernon is the fifth lohud volleyball player of the week this season. This was posted to the blog Sunday and is not in print.

State rankings: Panas still atop Class A in state rankings

What: Panas and Pawling are the only state-ranked teams from Section 1, according to the New York Volleyball Coaches Association. This post contains the top five rankings for each class in girls and boys volleyball throughout the state, not just the area. This was posted to the blog Thursday and is not in print.

Facebook Live: Chat with lohud volleyball beat writer Mike Zacchio (Episode No. 6)

What: In the sixth edition of my weekly Facebook Live chat on my work account, I discuss why I wrote my column on the term, “side-out,” changes to my weekly rankings, coverage plans and more. Facebook Live chats will go on every Tuesday night at 8 p.m., unless otherwise noted. If you follow my account (not necessarily add me as a friend), you will get a notification when I go live. The chats will usually last between 10-20 minutes, depending on the amount of material I have to discuss. Email me questions ahead of time if there’s anything you’d like me to address! I’m at mzacchio@lohud.com.

Grass, good Red Raider 'D' stifle Fox Lane in 0-0 tie

THIELLS – One team entered the game with three wins. The other had eight.

But there was an extra player on the field Monday when Fox Lane’s field hockey team visited North Rockland for a non-league game: the grass.

The Red Raiders’ field, which has a slower, rougher surface compared to the turf fields that field hockey is usually played on, combined with North Rockland’s effective, swarming defense inside its defensive circle, served to nullify any advantage Fox Lane’s record might indicate it had.

“It was a mess,” Fox Lane coach Kim Gigante said of the grass. “I think we had a hard time executing. The ball was there but we just couldn’t finish. It was a lot slower. Doing something takes twice as much energy to do on grass. We definitely beat them on fast breaks but with the surface the ball got caught up a lot.”

Although Natalie Bazyk generated offense for Fox Lane with her speed, junior Danielle Palladino agreed the surface hampered the Foxes.

“We definitely rely on sweeps and sometimes the reverse and you can’t use that. You have to rely on drives and really strong pushes,” she said

North Rockland, 3-7-3, definitely looked more at home on the surface and, in fact, outshot Fox Lane, testing Fox netminder Grace Kiernan seven times.

The Red Raiders also had a couple of excellent long crossing passes to the far post that didn’t quite connect.

“We had ample opportunities. We just have to finish,” North Rockland coach Jessica Nasuti said.

Player of the game: Palladino, who missed the game’s closing minutes after taking a ball to her chin, had multiple stops on defense, particularly in the second half.

Turning point: An official’s questionable call stopped a potential Fox Lane goal off a corner. Olivia Dey lofted the ball high over a pack of players to a teammate, who was alone on the far post against goalie Megan Mallozzi, but the play was whistled as being dangerous.

“It was a perfect lift,” Gigante maintained.

Another key moment came when North Rockland forward Caitlyn Lynch pushed the ball in front of the goal and beat Fox Lane’s defense to it but was stopped by Kiernan, who came out almost on top of her to eliminate any angle.

Fox Lane goalie Grace Kiernan stops Caitlin Lynch as Kerri Gutenberger (13) looks for rebound.

Stat line: Fox Lane had an 8-2 advantage in corners but it was largely stopped by North Rockland’s defense. Senior Mary Callan’s corner stop late in the game led to a Red Raider offensive breakout.

“I feel like today we had layers and had each other’s backs,” Nasuti said, referring to her squad’s defensive effort.

Mallozzi had four saves.

Quotables: North Rockland forward Kerri Gutenberger lamented her team’s missed chances off crossing passes but was otherwise pleased.

“Our communication level was really high today and we were using each other a lot,” she said, adding her team’s defense has become a “brick wall.”

“I’m happy we tied and didn’t lose, but we’re trying to get a good seed in sectionals so we need to get as many wins as we can to get a seed that’s high,” Palladino said.

MAMARONECK – The biggest hit at the third annual Section 1 vs. Section 9 boys soccer challenge was the food truck that Pow! Burger in New Rochelle sent over to Mamaroneck High School for the day.

The host Tigers were set to play in the final game against Warwick, and their players simply couldn’t resist. Coach Rich Becker was worried that some may have overindulged too close to game time, none more so than Sebi Santamaria.

The senior forward downed two cheeseburgers and then proceeded to score the first goal in Mamaroneck’s 2-0 win, disproving his coach’s theory that the second burger would slow him down.

“I guess 90 minutes was enough for me to digest the burgers,” Santamaria joked. “Maybe I’ll have to take a trip to New Ro before every game and go to Pow! Burger.”

Santamaria came off the bench and blasted a 25-yard screamer into the top left corner of the net in the 17th minute. Seeing a backup score such a high-difficulty goal only reinforced the enviable depth that the Tigers possess.

Mamaroneck improved to 12-1-1 on the same day it moved to No. 1 in the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings.

“We’re No. 1 in the state for a reason,” Santamaria said. “We have third-string players who can go out there and still do better than some of our opponents.”

Mamaroneck’s second goal came in the 47th minute, when Conor LeBlanc hooked up with Alex Alma on a corner kick. The two-goal lead was plenty for the Tigers, who did not allow a shot on goal.

Since a loss to Yorktown on Sept. 12, Mamaroneck has gone 9-0-1.

“After we lost against Yorktown, we went on a streak where we scored like 17 goals and let in zero,” Santamaria said. “We’ve definitely stepped it up as a team.”

Lakeland 2, Cornwall 0: Nick Foci scored twice, in the 63rd minute and again in the 77th, to help the Hornets defeat the sixth-ranked Class A team in New York State. Luka Rudovic and Matias Prando had the assists and Nick Estrella made four saves for his third straight shutout.

Byram Hills 2, Red Hook 0: Max Hammond scored the Bobcats’ first goal in the 53rd minute on an assist from Mike Bordash. Hammond added an assist in the 73rd minute on freshman Yusef Hafez’s first varsity goal. Sam Alvis (two saves) and David Fishman (two saves) combined for the shutout.

Goshen 1, Valhalla 0, OT: Less than four minutes into overtime, Liam Kelly scored the winning goal. Michael Glick made five saves for the shutout and Lorenzo Luciano made eight saves for the Vikings.

Spackenkill 1, Bronxville 0: Jake Kaufman scored the lone goal in the fourth minute. Quinn McGinnis made six saves for the shutout and Eddie Connors made four saves for the Broncos.

Hen Hud quarterback Nick Cunningham was named the Week 6 Player of the Week after leading his team back to beat Rye, 50-49, on Sept. 30, 2016 at Rye High School.

Varsity Insider Week 6 Player of the Week —

Nick Cunningham, Hen Hud: Really, you were expecting someone else?

Cunningham had what amounted to an out-of-body experience in the second half of Hen Hud’s 50-49 stunner at Rye. Behind 242 yards alone in the final two quarters, the senior threw for 403 yards and six touchdowns to steer the Sailors back from the brink.

They trailed 49-28 midway through the fourth quarter before Cunningham ran for a score with 3:57 to play. He then through a touchdown on fourth-and-15, recovered an onside kick, threw another touchdown and then threw the winning two-point conversion…all within a span of 1:02.

Cunningham’s performance lifted Hen Hud to one of its biggest and most important wins in a generation, but let’s focus more on the present. It also allowed the Sailors to finish 4-2 and vaulted them several spots in Class A’s playoff seeding. They earned the No. 7, which will give them a home game this week against No. 10 Tappan Zee.

Boys soccer #POTW: Nanuet's Matt Wain

Nanuet junior Matt Wain is the latest #lohudsoccer Player of the Week.

Nanuet junior Matt Wain is the latest #lohudsoccer Player of the Week.

Just a few years removed from a rebuilding process in which Nanuet did not to participate in the Section 1 playoffs, the Golden Knights are enjoying a resurgence. They’ve moved into the top 10 in Class A thanks to an 8-4-1 overall record, and last week provided more encouraging signs.

It was a short week for most teams due to Rosh Hashanah, but Nanuet made the most of its two games. First, the Knights tied defending Class A champ Pearl River — a result that few saw coming based on their recent history. It was the first time they had played the Pirates and not lost since 2008. Nanuet followed that up with a 3-2 comeback win against another league rival in Nyack.

In both games, junior Matt Wain played a critical role. That’s why he’s the latest #lohudsoccer Player of the Week.

Against the Pearl River, Wain found Joe Saxton for the assist on Nanuet’s lone goal to ensure the tie. And against the Indians, Wain scored two of the Knights’ three goals, including the equalizer just before halftime, which coach Nicholas Patrikis said “shifted momentum our way.”

“Matt brings a tremendous amount of energy and flair to each match, which always gives the team a boost,” Patrikis said. “His second goal in the Nyack game, an absolute seed from the top-left of the 18 to the right-side netting, was especially uplifting.”

Others who were considered this week included Riverside’s Esad Mackic, Brewster’s Hugo Guerra, Hen Hud’s David Perez, North Salem’s Mike Selzer, Hastings’ Diego Rodriguez, North Rockland’s T.J. Piscopiello, Pleasantville’s Liam Perrine, Ossining’s Miguel Marra, Gorton’s John Beltran, Harrison’s Rintaro Ishiguro, Eastchester’s Luca Fava, John Jay’s Matt Hegarty and Mahopac’s George Weiss.

Ramapo boys basketball coach Dave Sachs at The Westchester County Center in 2001. Sachs died of a heart attack at the age of 68 on Tuesday.

Dave Sachs dedicated more than four decades of his life to athletics in the East Ramapo school district before retiring in 2013. Yet when athletic director Bill Pilla needed a head coach for the Pomona Middle School girls soccer team this season, Sachs gladly offered his services.

“I just know the kind of guy Dave was, and it wasn’t even a hesitation,” Pilla said. “He is East Ramapo.”

Sachs, 68, passed away Tuesday after suffering a heart attack. News of his passing rocked the East Ramapo community and his closest friends.

“When you think about Dave Sachs, he’s a pro’s pro,” Pilla said. “He’s a guy that, from Day 1, had a vision of what kind of a coach he wanted to be, and he followed that all the way until the end.”

Sachs coached three sports for nearly his entire 44-year career in the district. Pilla and Rockland County sports historian Tom Doherty estimated that Sachs coached a team in 129 of the 132 seasons during his tenure.

Sachs accumulated more than 300 wins as a varsity boys basketball coach, and was an assistant on the 1982 Spring Valley team that won Rockland County’s only state championship.

“He had the success in boys basketball, but many, many, many of the teams — either on the varsity or the JV level — that he coached up there, they weren’t winning championships,” said Doherty, a former athletic director at Pearl River High School. “Anyone can keep coaching when they got the athletes and they’re winning the titles — that’s the easy stuff.”

When Sachs took the Pomona girls soccer gig this summer, he did not cut any players from the roster because he wanted them all to gain experience, Pilla said. Sachs chose to carry 32 players on a team he was coaching without an assistant.

“He would’ve coached anything,” Pilla said. “He’s one of those guys who probably goes on vacation and sees somebody playing a sport and is ready to tell them, ‘Hey, why don’t you try this?’ It doesn’t matter where he’s at, he was always a coach.”

Sachs is survived by his wife Karin and three daughters.

The funeral for Sachs will be held Thursday at Congregation Shaarey Israel at 18 Montebello Road in Suffern at 1 p.m. The shiva for Sachs will be held at his family home in Spring Valley on Thursday (7-9 p.m.), Friday (12-2 p.m.), Saturday (7-9 p.m.), and Sunday (12-4 p.m.).

I sat down this afternoon with sports editor Leif Skodnick to preview the upcoming Section 1 football qualifying round in Classes AA and A. We broke down the games I believe could be upset specials in each class. I also picked the 16 teams I expect to advance this week and tried to define what exactly the qualifying round is (playoffs or no?) and how it came to be.

Please listen to our chat on SoundCloud or subscribe to download the Lohud Sports podcast on iTunes. We’ll have more on high school football in the coming weeks, so make sure you don’t miss it.

Hastings passes test at Blind Brook with ease

Hasting’s Jackson Silverstein (11) works the ball past Blind Brook’s Jonah Gklick (25) during a boys varsity soccer game at Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

RYE BROOK – They’ve only been together for a month and a half, but the chemistry is already quite obvious between Hastings seniors Jackson Silverstein and Oscar Pereira.

Silverstein was a key member of last year’s team, which went to the Class B state final four for the first time in program history. Watching nearby was Pereira, who had been in the U.S. Academy system before committing to West Point and joining the high school ranks for his final year.

Now they’re teammates, and they connected less than 10 minutes in during a resounding 3-0 win over Blind Brook on Tuesday.

“Oscar looked up at me because he likes to send those long balls,” Silverstein said. “He goes back and forth — he can switch between striker and center back — and he just gave me that look. It went through the gap perfectly on the ground, their center back missed the ball and I just slotted it away in the corner.”

Prior to Tuesday, the top-ranked Yellow Jackets had yet to play a Class B team which was also ranked in the top five, which sparked curiosity about how they would fare against the fourth-ranked Trojans.

Hastings emphatically quieted the doubters, winning the possession battle decisively and preventing Blind Brook, which was playing without top-scorer Joao Souza due to a red card in his last game, from getting off a single shot on goal in the second half.

The crisp passing from the Yellow Jackets was especially impressive, as they continue to benefit from an influx of players that have returned from the U.S. Academy system. Pereira leads the team with 11 goals and eight assists, while sophomores Reid Koken, Diego Rodriguez and Sasha Fuller have also made an impact.

“It’s nice to be able to play with your friends because my whole life, I’ve just been playing Academy,” Pereira said. “A lot of Academy kids came out to play this year, which has created more of an Academy-level of passing. The kids, especially on the back line, we’re all experienced. Everyone knows where they need to be and when.”

Player of the game: Jackson Silverstein, Hastings — The speedy senior pushed the pace all afternoon, scoring the first goal on an assist from Pereira and assisting on the third and final goal from Koken. He now has eight goals on the season.

Turning point: Even though Hastings only led by one goal at halftime, it never really allowed the Trojans to have any quality chances. Once Willem Bos made it 2-0 with screaming shot in the 61st minute, it was clear that the result was in hand.

Stat line: Hastings (11-1-1) — Silverstein had a goal and an assist, Bos and Koken each scored and Pereira added an assist. Daymon Theodule made two saves and the Yellow Jackets took 17 shots. Blind Brook (7-4-1) — Jordan Schoen made eight saves and the Trojans took five shots.

Quotable: “Coming into this game, we knew they were probably going to be the best team we’ve played so far, so we were looking forward to it,” said Silverstein, who noted that Hastings has big games coming against Yorktown and Bronxville. “We just want to see how we’re going to do against some of the better teams. It helps because you don’t want to go coasting into your first sectional game. You want to have some momentum going and know that you’re playing at a high level.”

What Gene Dall wants after 47 years coaching

Gene Dall, North Rockland track and field coach, in his Tomkins Cove home, which is filled with years of memories — much of it displayed on the walls..jpg

Maybe it’s just as well the sponsor dropped out, so when Rockland County still names a track and field coach of the year each winter and spring, plaques no longer are awarded.

After all, wall space is limited in Gene and Lonnie Dall’s Tomkins Cove home.

With rival coaches invited for barbecues, disadvantaged kids sometimes taken in and foreign athletes having been lodged (including two Russian future Olympic pole vaulters and their coaches whom the KGB monitored during their stay), the Dall residence is more home than house.

But it has a Hall of Fame air with sports photos and posters; son Ryan’s pole vaulting ribbons and medals; and Gene’s coaching plaques.

Dall, 69, has been Rockland coach of the year 36 times.

So far.

He retired as a North Rockland physical education teacher in 2001. He sometimes talks of packing for Texas to be near Ryan, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s track and field coach, and Ryan’s wife and their two daughters.

But not just yet.

“If you retire and do nothing, you’re putting one foot in the grave and I really enjoy it. It’s still fun,” Dall said.

Coach inspired him

Track and field is where he has made his name. He was inducted last year into the Rockland County Track & Field Hall of Fame. But he has also coached football, baseball, softball and wrestling, the latter when student teaching while attending Ithaca College, where he played football and threw the shot and discus.

“My idea when I came out of college is I would be the world’s greatest football coach,” he said.

But this winter will mark the start of his 47th year coaching North Rockland track and field.

If he had a do-over button much would remain the same.

That includes attending high school in New Milford, New Jersey, where track coach Bill Monahan changed lives, including Dall’s. Everyone was treated equally. Everyone was greeted in hallways, including a shy kid from a Catholic elementary school who needed inclusion.

Monahan won 110 straight dual meets without a school track. Dall trained throwing from a school patio.

“He made you know not to let anything stand in the way,” Dall said.

Noting he has emulated Monahan, who died last year, he quipped, “I guess it’s worked.”

Champions, tragedy

Dall’s advantage has been a big school and supportive administration. But he has also succeeded by bucking trends and sticking with quality-over-quantity training.

He has coached state and national champions, including Ryan, now 40. He also coached his daughter, Shelley, 33, who works in New Orleans in television and movie production; and adopted son Dasheen Ellis, one of NY’s best triple jumpers in 2009. A culinary school graduate, he’s employed by a top New Orleans restaurant.

Coaching his kids was great fun. But he’s most proud of his teams “rising to the challenge and winning over the years.”

Many of Dall’s athletes have competed in college. Some have become coaches.

Dall’s own parents didn’t go to high school. His father, a plasterer, did Radio City Music Hall’s decorative ceiling work. But his parents took loans, insisting he go to college.

He’s lucky, he said.

But athletes have died. He remembers their names and their personalities just as much as their performances.

And Gene and Lonnie lost their first child, Michelle, in an April 1980 car accident that severely injured Lonnie and killed her mother and great aunt. Michelle was 6.

“I don’t remember coaching that spring until the state meet,” Dall said.

That was when Todd Sinclair, who lived in a local group home, won the 1,600 at the wire.

“He throws his body across the finish. 4:09,” Dall said, remembering his time and Sinclair, a future University of Florida record-setter, running to him.

“‘This is for you,’  he said, hugging me,” Dall recalled.

It wasn’t easy for Gene, or Lonnie, a former teacher, coach and official. But they moved forward.

Between the track kids, close friends, and Boris, their talented-sprinter rescue dog, they don’t lack local family.

So Dall’s staying put for now with more coaching awards clearly on the horizon.

His to-do list?

“It’s just to keep everything going the way it has,” he said. Then he paused and rethought things. “Well,” he said, “we haven’t had an Olympian yet. That would be nice.”
