1. Ursuline (9-0) –  The Koalas stay atop the rankings for the fourth consecutive week as they finish the regular season with an undefeated record after beating New Rochelle this past week. Ursuline won the Conference 1 League B title and will play in the team championship starting on 10/24. The second doubles team of junior Emma Gordon and sophomore Mary B. McLoughlin have been dominate this year, finishing the season with a perfect record in nine matches. Attention now turns to the conference and sectional tournaments in which all eyes will be on Laina Campos and Vanessa Ciano in their quest for a state title. Previous ranking: 1

2. Harrison (11-0) – The Huskies defeated Pelham this week to finish the regular season undefeated.  Harrison has now won 23 consecutive matches dating back to last year, and they have won the Conference 2 League C title for the third straight season.  They will next play in the team championship starting on 10/24.  The third doubles team of senior Jess Hart and sophomore Juliana Sica has been a bright spot for the Huskies all season as they have consistently contributed to the team’s success.  Previous ranking: 2

3. Bronxville (10-1) – The Broncos finished the regular season with back-to-back wins over Keio this past week. Those wins clinched Bronxville’s third straight Conference 3 League B title. They will next play in the team championship starting on 10/24. The strong play at third singles and second doubles has been a large part of the Broncos continued success this season. Sophomore Lindsey Cruikshank finished the year with a 9-2 record and has established herself as one of the top third singles players in the section. The second doubles team of senior Olivia Jensen and sophomore Sarah Goodell has also been impressive, having only dropped two matches all season. They will look to continue their winning ways at this weekend’s conference tournament. Previous ranking: 3

4. Edgemont (10-1) – The Panthers defeated Hastings and Blind Brook this past week to clinch a share of the Conference 3 League B title.  Edgemont will next play in the team championship starting on 10/24. The Panthers continue to benefit from the strong play of their singles players. Second singles player Shruti Kanna has now won 8 consecutive matches only to be slightly outdone by third singles player Iris Lin who has won 9 straight.  Both players hope to continue their hot streaks at this weekend’s conference tournament. Previous ranking: 4

5. Mamaroneck (10-2) – The Tigers finished the regular season with convincing wins over eighth-ranked Scarsdale and ninth-ranked Horace Greeley. The win over Scarsdale secured Mamaroneck a second place finish in Conference 1 League B behind top-ranked Ursuline, who is the only team to defeat Mamaroneck this year. Attention now turns to the conference and sectional tournaments where sophomores Alison Zerbib and Katherine Orgielewicz will look to repeat their success from last year and reach states for the second year in a row. Previous ranking: 5

6. Rye (9-2) – The Garnets finished the regular season on a roll with wins over seventh-ranked Byram Hills, ninth-ranked Fox Lane and Nyack. Just like the first time they played, the rematch with Byram Hills was a tightly contested affair that came down to fourth doubles. The pair of junior Ainsley Schulz and senior Olivia Giroux clinched the victory for Rye in straight sets. The win earned the Garnets a second place finish in Conference 2 League C behind second-ranked Harrison, who is the only team to defeat Rye this season. The Garnets will next play in the team championship on 10/24. Previous ranking: 6

7. Byram Hills (7-5) – The Bobcats finished the regular season with two wins over Ardsley and a close loss to Rye. All five of their losses this year have been to ranked teams (2 to Harrison, 2 to Rye and 1 to Fox Lane). Their four league losses were by scores of 4-3 and came down to third set super-tiebreakers. They may have finished in third place in Conference 2 League C, but Byram Hills was just a few points away from the title. Doubles players Olivia Tantleff and Jamie Begleiter have been bright spots this season in what has been a deep doubles contingent.  Both have had success at first and second doubles. Previous ranking: 7

8. Scarsdale (6-7) – The Raiders finished the regular season with a loss to fifth-ranked Mamaroneck. Their record is not indicative of Scarsdale’s ability. All of their losses have come to teams ranked in the top 5, and they were able to clinch a third place finish in Conference 1 League B. The first doubles pair of 9th graders Maggie Akuetey and Luisa Mendes may be the most improved players of the year. After starting the season off with a 2-3 record, Akuetey and Mendes have rattled off 8 straight wins against some of the stiffest competition in the section. They will be a team to watch in this weekend’s conference tournament. Previous ranking: 8

T-9. Horace Greeley (8-3), Yorktown (8-3), Fox Lane (6-3) – The regular season may be over but the Conference 1 League A title is still up for grabs. Greeley defeated Fox Lane two weeks ago by a close 4-3 margin. Fox Lane is currently leading Yorktown by a score of 3-2 in a match from three weeks ago that still has not been completed. Last week, Yorktown was up on Greeley 3-1 in another match that was called for darkness. Until these matches are completed, it is difficult to predict who will be crowned league champion. They may all end up sharing the title at the end of the day. Previous ranking: 9, 10, 10

10. Briarcliff (13-0) – The Bears finished the season undefeated with a win over Dobbs Ferry this past week. Just like all of their previous 12 victories, Briarcliff won by a score of 5-0. Singles players Rebecca Lim and Loren Haukova finished the year unbeaten and will enter this weekend’s conference singles tournament as the early favorites to qualify for states. The first doubles team of junior Abbie Hentel and sophomore Kacey Hamlin, along with the second doubles team of senior Sam Simpson and sophomore Katya Didonato, will look to prove that they too deserve respect for having undefeated seasons at the upcoming conference doubles tournament, which will include doubles teams from top ranked teams like Bronxville and Edgemont.  Previous ranking: 10

On the bubble:  John Jay Cross River (8-4), Suffern (10-3)

Coaches polled: Ted Garber (Bronxville), Mark Canno (Rye Neck), Quan Huynh (Harrison), Katie Feinstein (Edgemont), and Roger Dayer (Yorktown).

Dougherty: Soccer overtime rules not clear - A sectional rule that lets ties stand is not widely known or implemented

North Rockland plays Suffern in girls soccer at Suffern Middle School on Oct. 5, 2016.

It’s been a few years since I’ve spent any time watching soccer.

The game was simpler then.

Seriously, as long as none of the conscientious moms replaced the donut holes and juice boxes with orange slices and bottled water, the kids left the field in a good mood.

Overtime was never part of the game.

So last week I’m watching North Rockland and Suffern go up and down, back and forth under the lights for 80 minutes without scoring a goal. Hey, it’s soccer and that happens. The issue that inspires a fair amount of concern in a season where the schedule is compressed is the extra 20 minutes of wear and tear that followed.

And yes, I forgot to bring a snack.

“I don’t see the point of playing overtime in the regular season,” said Ciara Ostrander, a standout forward at Somers. “It really takes a toll.”

Mahopac's Zina McInerney (left) and Somers' Ciara Ostrander battle for possession of the ball during a Section 1 girls soccer game between Mahopac and Somers at Mahopac High School on Saturday, Oct. 8th, 2016. Somers won 2-0.

The situation deserves scrutiny.

Under guidelines in play across the state, overtime includes two mandatory 10-minute sessions and there is some logic in the process.

“Weather is an issue upstate, especially in the postseason,” longtime Pearl River coach Tim Peabody said. “If you’re playing against the wind, it’s a big disadvantage and the girls do not have the same leg strength as the boys. You don’t want the game decided by a coin flip. This gives both sides an equal chance.”

SECTION 1 SOCCER: Short soccer schedule a health risk

MERCOGLIANO: Five soccer coaches form lifelong bond

DOUGHERTY: Losing on penalty kicks – worst thing ever?

It doesn’t matter how many goals are netted along the way, the girls play to the bitter end. The boys utilize a golden-goal format, which is a retooled label for sudden death.

So what’s the problem with a tie?

We all enjoy the drama that comes with overtime, but there’s really no urgency to determine a winner until we get into sectionals.

“I’ve been coaching for 30 years at every level,” said Pelham coach Massimo Gargiulo. “It’s my first year coaching varsity girls and the overtime makes no sense. There’s nothing wrong with an 80-minute tie, especially with all these games played in a short amount of time. Even the golden goal doesn’t make sense for the boys.”

That seems to be the consensus.

“It’s not a natural part of league play anywhere the game is played professionally,” Sleepy Hollow coach Anthony Patierno said. “Adding extra minutes to an already packed schedule has no real benefit. If the game is a tie, let it be a tie at the end of 80 minutes. A tie is definitely part of team strategy. I might play a powerhouse like Somers and look to end in a 0-0 tie. The point for my team would be well-earned and they would be frustrated not leaving with a win. That is definitely part of team tactics in soccer.”

“Two weeks ago my girls played five games in eight days and three of those games went to overtime,” Clarkstown North coach Bryan Smith said. “That’s nearly another entire game. When you have 16 games in such a short period of time, you are really risking player injury.”

“At this age I think the biggest negative to this rule is the kids’ welfare in that they are already playing far too many games in a short period of time,” John Jay coach Dave Nuttall said. “And then you’re making them play extra time on top of that. At the end of the game when players are already suffering from fatigue is when they are most susceptible to injury, and you are pushing these kids even further for no reason as it’s a league where ties count for points.”

There is an option.

According to Section 1 executive director Jen Simmons, both schools may agree prior to a game to let a tie stand at the end of regulation. Of course, that only applies to regular-season contests.

For some reason, that common sense amendment is not widely known.

The proverbial ball was dropped somewhere along the way and the powers that be need to huddle before next season and get on the same page. And if it helps remind everyone what’s really important, I’m happy to bring donut holes and juice boxes.

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you all enjoyed what will be the final rest period before the end of the season. We’re back in action today, with a loaded slate of matches on tap. I’ll be covering Hen Hud at Yorktown, in what will be a battle between two lohud-ranked Top 10 teams. Before we get to the schedule and predictions, here are some things you might have missed earlier this week:

COLUMN: Liberos a confusing, underrated position

OBITUARY: Longtime East Ramapo coach Dave Sachs dead at 68

What: Not my typical work, I was assigned to write the obituary for Dave Sachs, a longtime coach in the East Ramapo school district, who unexpectedly passed away Tuesday after suffering a heart attack. I never met Sachs, but he sounded like a truly remarkable man. Please spare a few minutes and give it a read.

I’ve embedded my Facebook Live chat from Tuesday night. It’s longer than usual, so you obviously don’t need to watch all of it. As always, I appreciate any time you devote to it. You can add me as a friend or “follow” my account to get notifications when I go live here. Follow me on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat for more coverage at: @Zacchio_LoHud.

Class B playoff standings through Week 6

Ardsley and Valhalla compete in a game won 14-7 by Ardsley at Valhalla High School on Oct. 7, 2016.

There is just one week remaining in Class B’s regular season and the top eight teams appear to have separated themselves from the pack. That’s important because — unlike Class AA and A — only eight teams qualify for the postseason in Class B.

Below are the standings I have calculated for Class B through Week 6. The top eight appear to be quarterfinal bound, so this week will probably just determine which teams are seeded where. Obviously, Pleasantville and Westlake will meet Saturday in the biggest game of the season to date. That will determine the No. 1 seed. Other games to watch closely are Nanuet vs. Blind Brook and Ardsley vs. Albertus Magnus. (Note: Even if Edgemont lost to Putnam Valley this week, it would still qualify for the playoffs.)

CLASS B CALCULATIONS: See Josh’s spreadsheet for calculating the Class B playoff standings

After the seeds are set following Saturday’s games, the Class B quarterfinals will be scheduled for either Oct. 21 or 22 at the higher seeds. Those winners will meet in the semifinals the following weekend.

The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5 at Mahopac High School. Any questions, contact me via e-mail at jthomson@lohud.com or on Twitter.

Class B playoff standings (through Week 6)

1. Pleasantville (6-0), 34.111

2. Westlake (6-0), 32.08

3. Nanuet (4-2), 21.06

4. Ardsley (3-3), 14.885

5. Valhalla (4-2), 8.228

6. Albertus Magnus (4-2), 6.929

7. Edgemont (4-2), 5.686

8. Blind Brook (4-2), 5.158

9. Briarcliff/Hamilton (2-4), -1.96

Yorktown survives scare from short-handed Hen Hud

YORKTOWN – When the dust had finally settled Thursday afternoon, Katy Sherwood sat at her office desk “mentally exhausted,” running her fingers through her blonde hair.

And that was after the Huskers won their match against Hen Hud, 25-14, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16.

Yorktown cheers after winning a point during a varsity volleyball match against Hendrick Hudson at Yorktown High School Oct. 13, 2016.

Yorktown cheers after winning a point during a varsity volleyball match against Hendrick Hudson at Yorktown High School Oct. 13, 2016.

“Obviously Hen Hud, they’re going to come to play no matter what, and if you don’t think that, you’re a fool,” Sherwood said. “They made it very difficult for us.”

Both Yorktown (12-1) and Hen Hud (9-2) entered the match as reigning section finalists, with the Huskers reaching the Class A final last year and the Sailors claiming the Class B crown. The teams are now in Class A together, where they were each ranked among the top five teams in the class by The Journal News/lohud.

After a sluggish start, Hen Hud went on a 12-4 run to close out the second set before falling to Yorktown. The Sailors kept their momentum flowing through a third-set victory and into the fourth, where they led 10-6 before a Huskers timeout recharged the team.

“Our passing was very off today, so that makes it hard,” Sherwood said.

Yorktown had planned to see Sailors standout junior outside hitter Zoe Staats at the match, but not like this.

Staats was sidelined with a stress fracture in her left fibula suffered this past weekend. Instead of spandex and sneakers, the talented southpaw traded in her traditional game-day gear for black leggings, a brown Ugg boot on her right foot, and a black medical boot on her left.

Staats, a Journal News/lohud preseason Super 7 selection, said she will be reevaluated by doctors next week.

“I told my team not to even think about that,” Sherwood said, regarding Staats. “They still have to come out and play just as hard if she were in the game, and clearly, it doesn’t matter who is out on Hen Hud — they’re going to play hard.”

Yorktown libero Michelle Seger, who would’ve been tasked with defending most of Staats’ attacks, had a hard time masking her emotion once she saw Staats would be out of commission.

“Right when I saw her in leggings, I ran over to Sherwood and I was like, ‘Zoe is out? What?!’ ” said Seger, who still had her hands full with the Sailors’ offense, registering 30 digs in the win. “Definitely a relief.”

John Jay is hoping to extend a memorable season

CROSS RIVER – The highlight of a nondescript win came on the John Jay sideline after the handshakes were dispensed.

Each of the graduating players on the John Jay roster was presented a personalized teddy bear on Thursday, a Senior Day tradition. Normally, it’s a sign the end of the season is near.

This is not an ordinary fall, though.

Optimism is running higher than past seasons with the Indians enjoying a run of unexpected success. They have joined the likes of Pearl River, Rye and Byram Hills on the list of Class A playoff contenders.

Brewster's Maggie Depaoli, left, and John Jay's Kayla Brandt battle for ball control during their game at John Jay High School in Cross River on Thursday. John Jay won the game 6-0.

Brewster’s Maggie Depaoli, left, and John Jay’s Kayla Brandt battle for ball control during their game at John Jay High School in Cross River on Thursday. John Jay won the game 6-0.

All of those programs are chasing Somers, the reigning Section 1 champion.

“I think we have an exceptional group of girls,” first-year coach Dave Nuttall said. “We are beginning to jell. We have some good individuals and the important thing was bringing them all together. We need a bit of luck with the draw in the playoffs, but if that happens I think we are going to push the better teams.”

John Jay came out like an experienced team on Thursday, making quick work of a struggling Brewster team on the way to a 6-0 win.

“I think we’ve improved so much and maybe a lot of the other teams we play didn’t expect it,” senior midfielder Caroline Touzeau said. “We’re all excited going into sectionals now.”

Two league games against the Tuskers showed this group’s potential.

Somers won the first meeting by a 3-2 margin, and six days later the longtime rivals played to a scoreless tie.

“Both games were turning points,” Touzeau added.

With a week left in the regular season, the expectations are higher. The Indians know a home playoff game is within reach.

“These are the hardest-working girls I’ve ever been around,” senior defender Georgia Mraz said. “I think we know we have to be ready going into sectionals. We can’t go into any games with the mindset that a team is better than us.”

Player of the game: Touzeau had a goal and two assists.

“That was her 10th goal of the season,” Nuttall said. “She’s also created a lot of chances for us and is a danger to most teams.”

Turning point: It’s been a long season for the Bears, who have five players out with injuries on a roster that is only 17 deep. John Jay was aggressive early and built a 4-0 lead when freshman Charlotte Wilmoth scored with 8:18 to go in the opening half.

Stat line: Mraz, Hannah Dieck, Kayla Brandt and Sophia Flanagan each had a goal for the Indians. …  Avery David, Erin Walsh and Katrina Wittiner each had an assist.

Quotable: “These last two games are so important for us,” Touzeau said of the Indians’ remaining contests against Ossining and Greeley. “If we don’t go in with the right attitude, it’s not going to happen for us this season.”

Clarkstown South takes no one lightly come playoff time

WEST NYACK – Even with a playoff game awaiting them in less than a day’s time, Clarkstown South head coach Mike Scarpelli made sure the team did not deviate Thursday from the “blueprint” that put them in this position.

Clarkstown South takes on North Rockland in football action at North Rockland High School in Thiells on Saturday, September 10, 2016. The second half is postponed due to heat. Clarkstown South is up at the half, 17-0.

Clarkstown South takes on North Rockland in football action at North Rockland High School in Thiells on Saturday, September 10, 2016. The second half is postponed due to heat. Clarkstown South is up at the half, 17-0.

The team watched game film in the library, then met the cheerleaders in the Clarkstown South High School cafeteria for their traditional pregame dinner. Napoli’s pizzeria catered the weekly event, as per usual, with everything from pizza, to penne a la vodka, to chicken francese on the menu.

Vikings alum Frank Tucek was this week’s guest speaker, following in the shoes of past principals, superintendents, and Rockland County executive Ed Day.

Clarkstown South, the 3-seed in this year’s Section 1 Class AA football tournament, was a heavy favorite to take down 14th-seeded Mahopac on Friday, but those seeds mean nothing to Scarpelli.

“This might not be a word, but the first round is always the toughest because there is an unexpectedness of toughness from the teams in this round,” Scarpelli said before the game. “It doesn’t matter what high school you’re at, what state you’re in — it’s elimination.”

From Cinderella double-digit seeds that march through the NCAA men’s basketball tournament every March, to wild-card teams that go on to win the Super Bowl, a one-game playoff format can work to the advantage of underdogs who feel they have nothing to lose.

Scarpelli does his best to make sure his team never forgets that.

“We take our opponents very seriously,” Scarpelli said. “We’ve always been a middle-of-the-road team. If you take 20 ‘AA’ schools in the last 10 years, we’ve always been that 7-, 8-(seed).”

Carmel defeated Mahopac 21-0 in football action at Carmel High School Sept. 16, 2016.

Carmel defeated Mahopac 21-0 in football action at Carmel High School Sept. 16, 2016.

Scarpelli was reminded during last year’s 14-2 win over North Rockland just how nerve-wracking the first round of playoffs can be.

“It didn’t matter what their record was, they’re North Rockland,” he said. “When all is said and done, it’s, ‘Did you win the game?’ We don’t care if win 2-0, 3-0, 30-0.”

To ensure his Vikings were sharp for the game, Scarpelli arranged for a practice at the nearby West Rock indoor complex with rain falling Thursday. The location change was nothing more than a change of scenery for Clarkstown South.

“We practice the same amount of time. It wasn’t any more or any less time than the New Rochelle game, or the Clarkstown North game, (or with) any less intensity,” Scarpelli said.

Bronxville comes on strong late, beats Valhalla 3-1

BRONXVILLE -The Bronxville-Valhalla field hockey game opened with a Valhalla goal being disallowed.

It closed with host Bronxville showing just how it has won a dozen games this season.

The 12-3 Broncos, spreading the field with multiple-touch passes, scored twice in the last 12:34 of the game to pull away for a 3-1 win.

Valhalla's Lauren Kreder, left, tries to keep the ball from Bronxville's Hadley Barr during their game at Bronxville High School on Friday. The Broncos defeated the Vikings 3-1.

Valhalla’s Lauren Kreder, left, tries to keep the ball from Bronxville’s Hadley Barr during their game at Bronxville High School on Friday. The Broncos defeated the Vikings 3-1.

“The one thing they had over us was their passing,” said Vikings goalie Breanna Ciardullo, who had seven saves, several on hard shots through traffic.

Valhalla (9-3-2) played a superb first half, scoring within a minute of Bronxville’s initial score to go into halftime tied at 1-1.

Vikings Brenna Dockett and Angela Vlad had multiple big defensive stops.

But Valhalla couldn’t generate offense in the second half and the Broncos’ offensive pressure was almost relentless, led by Ellie Walsh, whose name didn’t show up on the score sheet but who was dominant.  Walsh had multiple shots on and around the net, some cross-field attempts that narrowly missed connecting with teammates on the back door.

She also had multiple steals, but it was a steal by Mia Bettino that led to the game-winning goal, which Bettino scored with 12:34 left.

Bronxville iced things with 5:17 to play when Andrea Shephard scored off a penalty corner on assists from Ava Austi and Kat Ungvary.

Player of the game: Bettino was the game’s star with the game-winning goal and an assist.

Turning point: Bettino’s goal, breaking the 1-1 tie, came on second effort. She intercepted the ball and dodged a defender. Cirardullo stopped her shot, trapping the ball between her feet. But the ball squirted out and Bettino found it amid multiple feet and scored just inside the left post.

Another key play occurred off Valhalla’s lone corner, which came with 26:41 left in the first half. The Vikings appeared to score but one referee overturned the goal, saying while a Bronxville player had deflected the ball in, no Valhalla player had touched it within the circle.

Stat line: They game’s key stat was penalty corners. Bronxville had nine to Valhalla’s one and scored its first goal with 14:46 left in the first half off a corner. Hadley Barr had the goal off Bettino’s assist.

But just 50 seconds later, Maria Pezzolanti scored to even things.

Quotables: Bettino, who liked her team’s passing, said it did a much better job of going for 50-50 loose balls in the second half, terming that “really the game-changer.”

Ciardullo was happy with her team’s effort, saying, “It was an amazing game – one of our best.”

“This team wants to learn and wants to grow. It has shown me nothing but that all season,” Valhalla coach Jenna Wenk said.

Hen Hud's success years in the making

Hen Hud's Marquan Anderson catches a long pass from Nick Cunningham early in his team's 20-14 win over visiting Tappan Zee on Oct. 14, 2016.

Hen Hud’s Marquan Anderson catches a long pass from Nick Cunningham early in his team’s 20-14 win over visiting Tappan Zee on Oct. 14, 2016.

Six years ago when he became co-head coach, Mike Lynch started to rebuild Hen Hud football from the ground up. His first move was to install a new offense, but it wouldn’t be enough to make that change on the varsity alone. So Lynch and the lower-level coaches integrated a new system on the modified and junior varsity, too.

“I played quarterback in high school and I played in a Wing-T offense. I hated it,” Lynch said. “I always wanted to go to the spread and play uptempo.”

After years of incremental gains, the Sailors have finally seen a significant impact on their results. They entered Friday’s Class A qualifier with Tappan Zee at 4-2. They have beat historically strong programs like Nyack, Somers and Rye in the last calendar year.

All of the players on this year’s team came up playing Lynch’s offense. In fact, the seniors were seventh graders on Hen Hud’s first modified team to run the spread.

“They’ve been in this offense for all six years,” Lynch said. “I think that’s part of the reason for our success today.”

Hen Hud began to gain confidence late last season when it beat Nyack in a playoff qualifier and topped Somers two weeks later in a consolation-round game. Late last year was when now-senior quarterback Nick Cunningham began to establish a rhythm, but he has since taken it to another level. Cunningham has already set 12 new records at Hen Hud and entered Friday having thrown for 1,607 yards and 25 touchdowns in just six games.

The play of Cunningham and his teammates paid its greatest dividends last week when the Sailors overcame a three-touchdown deficit to shock Rye 50-49. Cunningham threw last-minute touchdown and two-point conversion passes to cap a wild rally.

“We’ve always been on that precipice, asking can we win that big game, can we beat a great program like Rye?” said Lynch, who is in his first year as the full-time coach after splitting duties with Paul Natale in 2011. “This does give us the sense that we can do it. We can compete with the best.”

Hen Hud, the No. 7 seed in Class A, can potentially play at No. 2 Brewster next week in what would be a rematch of their 56-49 classic on Sept. 16. It was the highest-scoring game in Section 1 all season.

The rematch could present the Sailors with a rare opportunity. Outside of qualifying round games, they haven’t won a playoff game since they lost to Harrison in the 1999 Class B final.

Ossining goal keeper Luke DeAngelis tumbles after failing to stop a shot by Port Chester’s Francisco Romero for the first goal of the game during a varsity soccer game at Ossining High School Oct. 14, 2016.

OSSINING – Having the reputation as one of the best teams in Section 1 year in and year out, one could say that Port Chester is having a down year this season.

Already guaranteed to not have a winning record in the regular season, the Rams have played with the (in) consistency one would expect from a starting lineup that is mostly new following the graduations from last year’s loaded senior class.

Those problems, however, weren’t too apparent from start to finish in their game Friday. Port Chester’s quick-passing, possession-based attack shined in a 5-2 win over Ossining as the Rams improved to 6-8.

“Each game, I think we’re getting better,” senior midfielder Alex Cayetano said. “Our style of play is getting better, we’re getting to know each other more. We’re getting used to playing with each other.”

Only five minutes in, the Rams established control, with Selvin Estrada setting up Francisco Romero in front to open the scoring.

“We’re passing it way better than we used to,” Cayetano said. “We’re keeping the ball better, and we’re not committing any mistakes that we were committing at the beginning of the year.”

While teams generally feel more comfortable playing on their home field, the rough grass field at Port Chester isn’t anywhere near as conducive to cleaner play as compared to the turf field at Ossining.

That especially played to the Rams’ advantage in this game.

“Most of our games away are on turf fields; the ball rolls smoother,” junior forward Bryan Narvaez said. “It’s a better game than grass. It’s a more confident game.”

After the shock of the early goal, Ossining fought back and stayed within striking distance for most of the game. Senior forward Miguel Marra tied the score 1-1 in the 25th minute, and brought the Pride to within 3-2 in the 63rd minute after finishing off a lead pass from younger brother Mateo.

Having started off the year 5-0-1, including a win over defending Class AA sectional champs Arlington, the Pride have gone 2-6 since.

“We’ve been playing well, we’ve been losing games we shouldn’t lose, to be honest,” said Marra, who has 12 goals on the season. “These last two losses have been really inexcusable. We aren’t running out of gas, but we’re getting really unlucky.”

With sectionals coming up, Port Chester won’t be a high seed, maybe an unusual sight for the program. The Rams, thanks to improving chemistry and help from some recent JV call-ups such as sophomore midfielder Alejandro Llanos, think they can be as dangerous as ever in the postseason.

In the short-term, however, the focus shifts to Saturday: a long afternoon drive up to Dutchess County to take on Arlington.

“We’re ready for it; we’re a good team, so you got to take it day-by-day,” Narvaez said. “Arlington tomorrow, hopefully it goes well.”

Player of the game: Bryan Narvaez, Port Chester. The junior forward buried a shot during a scrum in front of the net to put Port Chester up 2-1 in the 37th minute. In the second half, he finished off a pass from Romero in front, tucking his shot lower right corner, to put the Rams up 3-1 in the 48th minute.

Turning point: With Ossining pressing following Marra’s second goal, the Pride nearly tied it 3-3 in the 68th minute. Mateo Marra flicked a header in the box right to older brother Miguel, who took an awkward-looking right-footed shot from the right side that clanged off the left post.

With 9:44 left, Cayetano hoofed in a shot from inside the box to put Port Chester up 4-2, with Jessi Villa providing the Rams with another insurance goal with 2:17 left.

Quotable: “We’ve really been kind of looking for an identity all year,” Port Chester head coach John Cafaldo said. “We’ll play a good game, and then play a game where you don’t recognize us. I’m hoping things are turning; we need to make a run, I’ve been preaching to the guys that it can happen. Teams have come from 15-, 16-seeds to make deep runs in the playoffs, and from what I’ve seen and what I hear, it’s pretty wide open.”

Hen Hud survives scare, beats Tappan Zee 20-14

MONTROSE – Before winning in last year’s qualifying round at Nyack, Hen Hud hadn’t won a playoff game since 1999. Perhaps the Sailors shouldn’t have expected Friday night to be easy, but they seemed like a solid favorite over Tappan Zee coming off last week’s wild win at Rye.

That proved to be wishful thinking against the feisty Dutchmen, who pushed No. 7 Hen Hud to the very end. The Sailors held on to beat the No. 10 seed 20-14 in a harrowing Class A qualifying round game.

Hen Hud won’t find out where it’s headed next week until later Saturday, but it’s just happy the season will continue.

Quarterback Nick Cunningham and Hen Hud defeated Tappan Zee 20-14 in a Class A qualifying round game at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose on Friday night.

Quarterback Nick Cunningham and Hen Hud defeated Tappan Zee 20-14 in a Class A qualifying round game at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose on Friday night.

“We were definitely a little bit rusty,” coach Mike Lynch said. “I have to tip my cap to coach (Andy) DiDomenico and Tappan Zee. Their game plan was basically to keep our offense off the field and it was smart.”

Hen Hud couldn’t find its offensive rhythm and saw a 12-0 lead turn into a 14-12 deficit after Ryan Holder returned a punt 65 yards for a score in the fourth quarter. The Sailors and quarterback Nick Cunningham responded with their best drive of the night, marching 62 yards in seven plays. Cunningham’s 39-yard pass to Michael Fasolino paved the way for a go-ahead 2-yarder to Jack Attinelly.

Cunningham finished 14 for 23 for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Player of the game: Jack Attinelly, Hen Hud. The senior not only caught the winning touchdown, he produced three key turnovers on defense. Attinelly’s playmaking allowed the Sailors to overcome a sub-par offensive game. He snared a pair of interceptions and recovered a fumble in the first half to help push Hen Hud to a 12-0 lead. The team needed every point.

“Our defense did decent. We usually give up as many as 40 points a game,” Attinelly said. “We had to buckle down because our offense wasn’t clicking. We knew we had to make big plays.”

Turning point: It didn’t come until the very end. After Hen Hud erased a long Tappan Zee completion by forcing a fumble, it then lost the ball back to the Dutchmen on the return. The defense needed one last stop and it delivered. Sophomore Jason Uyaguardi tackled Tappan Zee quarterback Henry Garrison for a loss on third down and then forced an incomplete pass by halfback Matt McGivney on fourth down.

Quotable: “I think that was probably our most mistake-prone half of the season,” Tappan Zee coach Andy DiDomenico said of the first half, which put his team in a 12-0 hole. “We had, I think, one turnover all season and we had three that half. Our kids fought back and were resilient and had a chance to win it in the end.”

Clarkstown South unsatisfied with 24-6 win over Mahopac

WEST NYACK – Looks like Napoli’s Pizza will have at least one more order to fill for the Clarkstown South football team this year.

The Vikings, who have a routine of ordering from the nearby pizzeria the night before a game, will get to extend their tradition an extra week after nearly shutting out Mahopac, 24-6, in the first round of the Section 1 Class AA tournament Friday night.

Even after a convincing win on the scoreboard that extended their season, Vikings senior Kyle Samuels was still not satisfied. Mahopac scored its lone touchdown — a reception by Reahl Allen — with 47 seconds left to end the shutout.

“The score looked like a blowout, but it definitely wasn’t. We let them hang in the game,” said the Vikings’ two-way standout, who scored two touchdowns and had an interception in the win. “We should’ve put them away.”

Under an illuminating full moon that broke up a sky blanketed by darkness, the only visible stars to the crowd of 300-plus spectators Friday were on Orlando Field at Coach Scro Stadium.

Samuels opened the scoring with a 43-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, then grabbed a 35-yard touchdown reception from a leaping Matt Jung in the third quarter. Ryan Thomas rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.

Mahopac's Andrew Ryan is tackled by Clarkstown South's Sean Hagan, left, and Luke Ramundo during their Class AA playoff game at Clarkstown South Oct. 14, 2016.

Clarkstown South head coach Mike Scarpelli stressed the importance of his team keeping with the routine they have established throughout the years — regardless of opponent, or their record, or their seed.

“This might not be a word, but the first round is always the toughest because there is an unexpectedness of toughness from the teams in this round,” Scarpelli said before the game. “It doesn’t matter what high school you’re at, what state you’re in — it’s elimination.”

Soccer player-turned-football kicker Michael Tagaris was perfect for the night, completing all three of his point after touchdown attempts, as well as a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to end the Vikings’ scoring for the night.

It was a rough night for Mahopac (2-5) before the Indians even arrived to field. The Indians’ team buses showed up a mere half-hour before the schedule start time.

Carmel gets emotional in a 27-7 win over Mamaroneck

CARMEL – The raw emotion was on display even before the coin toss.

A loss to Mamaroneck a year ago in a Class AA playoff qualifier was more than enough to motivate Carmel, which came onto the field in a dead sprint and quickly took exception to the visiting Tigers encroaching on the logo at midfield.

Fortunately, there was just enough reserve to prevent a pregame turf war.

The Rams needed some adrenaline after momentarily losing interest a week ago. A hyperactive approach resulted in a 27-7 win on Friday and ran the winning streak to five games.

A big defensive play sparked Carmel.

Mamaroneck chewed up 30 yards on three plays to open the game, but Ian Hubertus recovered a backward pass that was bobbled and dropped. The Rams gave up only 16 yards the rest of the half and had a shutout until the final minute of play.

The Tigers had no room to operate.

“With our defense, it all comes from our will to play and how we practice,” linebacker Matthew Sorbara said. “It was a little rough giving up points at the very end, but I think the scoreboard shows who we are.

Carmel's David Vega drags Mamaroneck's Michael Flatow behind him as he picks up yardage during a qualifying round game at Carmel High School Friday night.

Carmel’s David Vega drags Mamaroneck’s Michael Flatow behind him as he picks up yardage during a qualifying round game at Carmel High School Friday night.

“Getting a turnover early was huge. We always talk about capitalizing at the beginning of the game, making the first big play. And we didn’t let down.”

David Vega was a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball. The senior running back finished with 202 yards on 23 carries.

He landed in the end zone three times.

“That was a career day for me,” Vega said. “That was all my line and my receivers. It’s true. Without them I’m nothing. … I know it’s a playoff game and it means a lot, but I take it as just another game and chip away, chip away.”

Player of the game: The defense was impressive, but Vega had the best day of his varsity life in the biggest game to date.

“I’m sure the first thing David will say is how the offensive line did a great job, but he’s been working hard every single week to get better,” Carmel head coach Todd Cayea said. “He was a little frustrated with his performance over the first couple of weeks. He never complained. He just said, ‘I have to fix it.’ and he came to work every day. Now he’s seeing the fruits of that labor. He runs with a lot of passion.”

Turning point: After the intermission, the Rams went 55 yards on nine plays and were up 20-0 shortly after Vega went around the right side for a 13-yard touchdown.

Stat line: Vega had touchdown runs of 3 and 56 yards in the first half. … Carmel recorded three sacks in the first half. Dylan Seals had two of them. … Tommy Dillon hit Shane Smith with a 4-yard TD pass to get the Tigers on the board with 34 seconds to play.

Quotable: “It was a little rough giving up points at the very end,” Sorbara said. “But I think the scoreboard shows who we are.”
