Here are the 2016 girls tennis regular season all-stars, as selected by a panel of five local high school tennis coaches.

1st singles –

Nathalie Rodilosso (Rye) –

Tennis

Returning to high school tennis for her senior season after a two-year absence, Rodilosso established herself as one of the premier singles players in Section 1 with a 10-0 record.  She helped lead Rye to a 9-2 record and a top 10 ranking.  Her biggest wins came over Harrison, Byram Hills, Fox Lane and John Jay.  Not only did she never lose a match, but she hardly even lost a game.  Rodilosso easily won the Conference 2 singles tournament and will be a favorite to win the upcoming section and state tournaments.

Caitlyn Ferrante (Yorktown) – Ferrante arguably played the toughest schedule of anyone this year and still was dominant on her way to a 9-0 record.  With wins over the top players from Ursuline, Harrison, Mamaroneck, Greeley, Fox Lane and John Jay, Ferrante helped lead Yorktown to an 8-3 record and a top 10 ranking.  Having qualified for the upcoming section tournament, Ferrante will be one to watch to capture a spot in states.

Honorable mention: Olivia Ashton (Pleasantville), Clemence Balzano (Rye Neck), Laina Campos (Ursuline), Jenna Grandville (Tappan Zee), Ashley Granieri (Scarsdale), Rebecca Lim (Briarcliff), Mya Lipscomb (Panas)

2nd singles –

Loren Haukova (Briarcliff) – The Boston College-bound senior won every match this season 6-0 6-0 on her way to a 10-0 record.  Playing behind fellow standout Rebecca Lim in the lineup, Haukova helped Briarcliff achieve a perfect 13-0 record and was a large reason why the Bears were the top team in the 3-singles/2-doubles division.  She may have played second singles, but she is one of the top singles players in Section 1.

Keira Tobia (Ursuline) – Tobia missed the first part of the season due to injury, but was dominant upon her return, achieving a perfect 6-0 record.  Having played first singles last year, the senior was rounding into top form by the end of the season and achieved wins over top teams like Suffern and Mamaroneck.  Tobia continued her success into the postseason, winning the Conference 1 singles title and earning a top seed in the upcoming section tournament.

Honorable mention: Lucy Friedman (Rye Neck), Shruti Kanna (Edgemont), Maya O’Brien (Tappan Zee)

3rd singles –

Leah Tuluca (Fox Lane) – Only a 9th grader, Tuluca had an excellent debut season for Fox Lane, finishing with an unblemished 9-0 record.  Her biggest wins came over Byram Hills, Yorktown, Greeley, John Jay and Rye as she helped the Foxes finish with a 6-3 record and a top 10 ranking.  With their top 2 singles players graduating this year, Fox Lane will look to Tuluca to lead the team next season.

Vanessa Ciano (Ursuline) – Along with Laina Campos and Keira Tobia, sophomore Ciano completes Ursuline’s trio of singles players, which is arguably the top trio of singles players in Section 1.  Ciano finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record, which included four wins at 2nd singles due to Tobia’s injury, and wins over top teams like Mamaroneck, Scarsdale and Suffern.  Her attention now turns to defending her Section 1 doubles title with Laina Campos and a run at the state championship.

Honorable mention: Lindsey Cruikshank (Bronxville), Iris Lin (Edgemont), Maxine Zaretsky (Briarcliff)

1st doubles –

Kaho Nagayo and Ai Iwamoto (Keio) – Keio may have finished with a sub .500 season record, but their top doubles team finished with an undefeated 10-0 mark.  With wins over Bronxville and Edgemont, senior Nagayo and sophomore Iwamoto established themselves as one of the top doubles teams in the area.  They will be a team to watch in the upcoming Section 1 doubles tournament.

Marissa Magliato and Brittany Sedlak (Ursuline) – Ursuline’s top doubles team finished the year with a near-perfect 9-1 record.  Junior Magliato and 9th grader Sedlak proved that Ursuline did not just consist of top singles players.  Establishing themselves as one of the section’s most dominant doubles teams, Magliato and Sedlak had convincing wins over the likes of Mamaroneck, Scarsdale and Suffern.

Honorable mention: Eva Dani and Katharine Forst (Bronxville), Luisa Mendes and Maggie Akuetey (Scarsdale), Nadia Shtohryn and Lily Gengler (John Jay CR)

2nd doubles –

Alexis Chan and Lauren Alexander (Edgemont) – Finishing the year with an 8-1 record, the freshman duo of Chan and Alexander was a large reason why Edgemont finished 10-1 and achieved a top 5 ranking this season.  Their wins over Bronxville and Scarsdale helped the Panthers achieve their two biggest victories of the season.  Chan and Alexander are one of the only second doubles teams to qualify for the Section 1 doubles tournament this postseason.

Emma Gordon and Mary B. McLoughlin (Ursuline) – Yet another team from Ursuline makes the list.  The second doubles pair of junior Gordon and sophomore McLoughlin finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record including wins over Mamaroneck, Suffern and Scarsdale.  Gordon and McLoughlin boost an already talented contingent of doubles players for the top-ranked Koalas.

Honorable mention: Stephanie Rodilosso and Laura Jaramillo (Rye), Olivia Jensen and Sarah Goodell (Bronxville), Abby Owen and Jane Smoltz (Mamaroneck), Callie Sacks and Acadia Thielking (John Jay CR)

3rd doubles –

Katie Formato and Sophia Sheumack (Bronxville) – The 8th grade duo of Formato and Sheumack have been a large part of Bronxville’s success this season.  They finished their debut season with an 8-1 record, helping the Broncos achieve another league title and a top 5 ranking.  Despite their youth, Formato and Sheumack were the only third doubles team to reach the quarterfinals in the conference doubles tournament.

Jocelyn Stone and Isabel Abt (Rye) – As partners, senior Abt and 9th grader Stone were 7-1 and often provided Rye with the match clinching victory.  Nathalie Rodilosso receives much of the attention for the Garnets, but it was the success of Stone and Abt at third doubles that helped Rye achieve a 9-2 record and a top 10 ranking.  Their biggest wins came against John Jay, Byram Hills and Harrison.

Honorable mention: Lily Steckel and Samantha Leichtner (Scarsdale), Kara Regan and Mia Valecce (Ursuline)

4th doubles –

Alexandra Brumbaugh and Maryasa Krivitskaya (Bronxville) – Brumbaugh and Krivitskaya round out a strong doubles corps for Bronxville.  Their perfect 8-0 record was a big reason why the Broncos finished the year 10-1.  In fact, this sophomore and senior pair clinched the deciding point in the Broncos two biggest wins of the season against Edgemont and Scarsdale.

Katie Mulligan and Emily Casas (Ursuline) – Ursuline’s already strong set of doubles teams was further bolstered by the success of junior Mulligan and senior Casas at fourth doubles.  The pair’s perfect 10-0 record this season is further evidence of why Ursuline is viewed as the top team this season.  Their depth is unmatched with arguably the top singles trio and the top doubles contingent in Section 1.

Honorable mention: Julie D’Onofrio and Julia Applebaum (Harrison)

Coaches polled: Ted Garber (Bronxville), Mark Canno (Rye Neck), Quan Huynh (Harrison), Katie Feinstein (Edgemont), and Roger Dayer (Yorktown).

Soccer referee Gino D’Ippolito referees a game between Irvington and Bronxville High School, Thursday, May 1, 2003 at Concordia College.

Name: Gino D’Ippolito

Bio: The 81-year-old was born in Colledimezzo, Italy, on March 4, 1935, and has been a Yonkers resident since 1951. After playing soccer for many years, D’Ippolito began refereeing local games in 1963 and was invited to become a professional official in 1968 in the National Premier Soccer League.

In 1971, he was recommended to FIFA and went onto to officiate 15 World Cup qualifiers. D’Ippolito was chosen to referee the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and officiated in virtually every professional league in the U.S.

He was also an official at Pele’s first and last games with the New York Cosmos. D’Ippolito was a linesman at Pele’s first game, on Randall’s Island in 1975, and the referee for his last game, at Giants Stadium in 1977.

D’Ippolito still occasionally referees youth games and has been a U.S. Soccer national assessor since 1985.

Favorite memory: “My favorite memory was the time when I refereed a friendly match between the All-Stars of Europe vs. the rest of the world All-Stars. This was a match held to benefit UNICEF in a sold-out Giants Stadium and was televised worldwide.”

Biggest moment: “My biggest achievement is becoming an international FIFA referee. From 1975 to 1985, there were only seven FIFA referees in the entire United States.”

What it means to be in the hall of fame: “It is a great honor to be inducted into the Westchester County Hall of Fame. I have lived in Westchester County for 65 years and I still remember my first match at Tibbetts Brook Park in 1963. Since then, I have refereed on every soccer field in Westchester County and I was back at Tibbetts last Sunday refereeing a children’s game.”

Quotable: “As Gino’s son, it is a great honor to have grown up watching my father do what he loves the most. He was always able, willing, and ready to give back to those involved in the great sport of soccer. He has given me the values of humility, perseverance, and generosity.” — Dominic D’Ippolito

The induction banquet is scheduled for Thursday evening, Oct. 20, at the County Center in White Plains. For reservations, contact Kevin Cook at 914-231-4564 or kdc2@westchestergov.com. The Westchester Sports Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Westchester Parks Department. The plaques are on permanent display at the County Center.

Hall-of-fame Q&A with Stepinac's Mike O'Donnell - After 37 years coaching football at Stepinac, Mike O'Donnell is still going. He will be inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame Oct. 20, 2016.

Stepinac football coach Mike O’Donnell is pictured during his team’s win over Cardinal Hayes in the 2015 CHSFL ‘AAA’ championship game at Fordham University.

Name: Mike O’Donnell

Bio: The 56-year old was born and raised in Yonkers. He now lives in White Plains with his wife, Carla, and is a father of three grown kids, Maggie, Conor and Liam. O’Donnell played football and basketball at Blessed Sacrament and attended Iona College before he began coaching football at Stepinac in 1980. O’Donnell became the head football coach in 1988. He also coached freshman basketball for 10 seasons and the varsity “B” for four and even once coached a tennis match.

O’Donnell once owned two popular pubs in White Plains (Dooley Mac’s, Finn McCool’s) and even served as the Grand Marshal of the White Plains St. Patrick’s Day parade in 2005. He joined the school full-time as Stepinac’s director of athletics in 2005.

In his 29 years as the head football coach, O’Donnell has posted a 180-136-1 record, including five CHSFL titles. His coaching career is highlighted by a 24-1 mark and back-to-back CHSFL “AAA” championships in 2014-15. Last year’s team won just the second-ever Catholic state championship game.

O’Donnell has coached three athletes who went on to play professionally: Eric Ogbogu (NFL), Marty Conlon (NBA) and Brian Sweeney (MLB). There are currently over 40 Stepinac football players competing at the college level.

Stepinac coach Mike O'Donnell shouts at his players during the third quarter against Iona Prep in New Rochelle on Sept. 7, 2007.

Stepinac coach Mike O’Donnell shouts at his players during the third quarter against Iona Prep in New Rochelle on Sept. 7, 2007.

Favorite memory: “There have been many great memories,” O’Donnell said. “But in 2001 we beat Iona Prep on a last-minute touchdown when Tyler Nugent picked off a pass from John O’Neill and took it to the end zone. That game was the first Joe Riverso Memorial Game (named in honor of the former assistant who died on 9/11). That night was also our first night game and the place was packed. It went crazy. It was a packed house. That was a moment we will always cherish.”

Biggest moment: “Two things: 1. Winning a state championship last year with a 12-0 record. 2. Being able to help so many young men go on and be successful. Watching these guys grow up and go on to a great college never gets old.”

What it means to be in the hall of fame: “I honestly never thought I would be considered for such an honor. The people who are being honored and past recipients of the award is a star-studded group of coaches, players and people who meant so much to Westchester sports. I am excited to be inducted. My family and Stepinac is excited to be recognized for the work that we do with the young athletes of Westchester County.”

Quotable: “People throw around the term ‘family’ a lot in football, but there is not family like O’D’s Stepinac football family,” said assistant coach Jonathan Demarco, who played for O’Donnell and is in his 11th year as the defensive coordinator. “Twenty-eight years at the same school produces a pretty large family. He has never left Stepinac and never wants to leave Stepinac. He never wants to leave his family.”

Ossining defeated Long Island Lutheran 64-54 in the girls Class A final of the New York State Federation Tournament of Champions at the Times Union Center in Albany March 19, 2016.

Name: Dan Ricci

Bio: Although he has served as a three-sport varsity head coach, Ricci is most notably recognized for his work with the Ossining girls basketball team. Ricci has amassed over 400 victories with the girls basketball team, as well as seven Section 1 titles, four consecutive state championships, and the program’s first Federation championship. Ossining will look to become the first-ever girls basketball program to win five consecutive New York State Public High School Athletic Association titles when it takes the court this season. During his tenure, more than 30 former players have gone on to collegiate careers. Ricci was also the head coach of Ossining’s 2007 regional champion football team.

Biggest moment: “I would probably say winning the first state championship. It was a hump that we couldn’t get over, number one, also I had lost my mom the summer before, so it was kind of a big deal to me.”

Who had the biggest impact on your career? “Tom Caione, the athletic director who hired me when I was 20 years old. I learned a lot from him as far as discipline and work ethic and team-first — all those kinds of things — and just being loyal to your coaches and to your kids.”

What does it mean to be inducted? “I think it’s amazing, and the other three guys all did amazing things. They’re tremendous role models, and I’m honored to be a part of that group.

How do you want to be remembered as a coach? “Just someone that always put the kids first and helped them accomplish things that they think they were capable of on their own.”

Clarkstown South withstands Spring Valley's rally

SPRING VALLEY – A comfortable three-goal cushion quickly evaporated into a very shaky one-goal lead, but Clarkstown South never panicked.

In a win-or-go-home playoff game, the Vikings didn’t expect Rockland County foe Spring Valley to concede victory until the final whistle, so they anticipated an inevitable push from the Tigers.

“We’ve played Spring Valley a couple of times before, and we’ve got to expect that from them,” senior Connor O’Brien said. “They come out with energy if they’re down, so I was honestly expecting that. But we kept it together, put another goal in, and I’m happy with our performance overall.”

Spring Valley’s Joseph Pierre, left, pressures Clarkstown South’s Zach Gloskin during their Class AA boys soccer outbracket game at Spring Valley on Wednesday. The Vikings won 4-2.

The league rivals traded wins in two regular-season meetings, and the winner of Wednesday’s Class AA outbracket game would earn the right to play top-seeded Mamaroneck in the first round on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Clarkstown South, the No. 17 seed, dominated the first half and survived an up-and-down second half for a 4-2 win to keep its season alive.

“I told all of the boys when we came out for the second half that it was going to get pretty chippy,” senior Zach Gloskin said. “We just had to keep our composure and possess the ball to put them away.”

Player of the game: Zach Gloskin, Clarkstown South — The Vikings’ leading scorer refused to let this be his final high school game. He scored twice, on a penalty kick and a breakaway, in the first half, then added an assist in the second half. The forward is up to nine goals and four assists for the season.

Turning point: Trailing 3-0 at halftime, Spring Valley began the second half with a flurry. The 16th-seeded Tigers got two quick goals from Davidson Louis and Makendy Midouin, cutting the deficit to 3-2 in a matter of minutes, but South would respond. Gloskin found Quentin Szeker-Cortes, who buried a goal from the top of the box in the 52nd minute to push the lead back to two goals.

“That was huge,” Gloskin said. “It kind of brought the Spring Valley intensity down and brought our momentum back up.”

Stat line: Clarkstown South (5-9-3) — Gloskin had two goals and an assist while O’Brien and Szeker-Cortes had one goal apiece. Brendan Lynch added an assist and Thomas Zodda made eight saves. The Vikings took 14 shots. Spring Valley (5-9-3) — Louis had a goal and an assist and Midouin also scored. Anderson Italien made six saves and the Tigers took 13 shots.

Quotable: “There are no records going into the playoffs,” O’Brien said. “We’re going into (Mamaroneck) confident. I know they’re a good team, but we can play with anyone.”

Regular-season losses mean very little once the playoffs begin, and Saunders provided yet another example of that on Wednesday.

The 23rd-seeded Blue Devils were matched up against No. 10 Gorton in the Class A outbracket round at Tibbetts Brook Park, and despite losing twice to the Wolves previously this season, Saunders was able to reverse the result with a 2-1 overtime win.

“I told the guys at half that we have 40 minutes to get the equalizer, so stay calm,” coach Mike Denman said of his halftime message. “I’m proud of the composure my young team showed today. It bodes well for our future.”

Jairo Palacios headed in the winning goal after Jonathan Flores tied it at 1-1 early in the second half. Melvin Ponce made nine saves.

Next up, the Blue Devils will travel to play No. 7 Rye in the first round on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Here we go.

There are some intriguing matchups among the outbracket games, namely Ursuline at Mamaroneck and Panas at Hen Hud. If you’re looking for picks, I start those in the opening round. You’ll find at least two posts here daily. The schedule will go up early and the results will go up at the end of the day. I may update the schedule as we go along, too. I’ll keep a file near the top of the blog that has the updated schedule and results for the entire tournament.

I’m off, but you can tag me @hoopsmbd and I’ll look up from the Cubs and Packers games long enough to share the updates. Adrian will be out covering a game on Saturday and I’ll be making the rounds next week.

Kyriakidis nets 3 as Pleasantville beats Albertus Magnus

PLEASANTVILLE – The dam had only a small leak. Then in little more than a three-minute period, it was like the Johnstown Flood – or, more accurately, the Pleasantville Flood.

Leading only by a goal at the half, No. 6 seed Pleasantville routed No. 11 Albertus Magnus 5-1 in the first round of the boys Class B soccer playoffs Thursday at Pleasantville High.

It might have been a different game if not for a 3:21 span in the second half during which the Panthers scored three times.

Panthers senior Jon Kyriakidis had promised his grandfather Paul a goal for his 77th birthday.

Pleasantville’s Anthony Cardona, left, and Albertus Magnus’ Joe Michalak battle for control of the ball during their Class B first-round playoff game at Pleasantville High School Thursday. The Panthers defeated the Falcons 5-1.

But his grandfather had said, “I don’t know if I just want one.”

Kyriakidis responded with a hat trick, scoring Pleasantville’s first, third and fourth goals.

“We definitely stole the momentum after our second goal,” Kyriakidis said. “Our coach (Kyriakidis’ dad, Savvas) told us if we get the second goal it will be much easier for us but if they get a goal and it’s 1-1, it would be a war for us.”

The 9-4-3 Panthers will play at No. 3 Bronxville in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Albertus Magnus’ season ended at 6-11.

The Falcons nearly tied the score with 17:05 left in the first half. But Panthers sophomore goalie Jan Becerra, making his first sectional start, made a great diving save off a header.

His counterpart, Steven Travaglini, was also strong early.

His diving save robbed Liam Perrine with 3:47 left in the first half.

But, by that time, Pleasantville had already been enjoying a 20-minute lead courtesy of Kyriakidis’ first score off an assist from his brother Marc.

Pleasantville’s Jon Kyriakidis celebrates one of his three goals in the Panthers’ 5-1 win over Albertus Magnus on Thursday.

Player of the game: Jon Kyriakidis. It was his assist on a Perrine goal that went in off a defender with Travaglini down that changed the game.

Turning point: That goal, with 33:43 left, gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead and seemed to completely deflate the Falcons.

After that, Jon Kyriakidis scored with 31:55 left and then again with 30:22 left.

Jeremy Stone’s header off a Devin Juros corner kick with 21:30 left made it 5-0.

Stat line: Joe Michalak scored the Falcons’ goal on a free kick with 14:12 to play.

Nolan McAndrew had the assist on Pleasantville’s third goal, Zach Braverman on its fourth and James Grom on its fifth.

Both goalies were officially credited with four saves but snagged multiple loose balls with opposing players on top of them.

Quotables: Albertus Magnus coach Brian Fitzpatrick credited Travaglini with keeping his club in the game in the first half. But he was unhappy with his team’s response to Perrine’s goal.

“The first five minutes (of the second half) we had our chances and showed a little life. But that second goal we didn’t handle it well,” Fitzpatrick said. “You’ve got to be able to get over it.”

Alzuabidi nets both goals in New Ro's win over Mahopac

NEW ROCHELLE – Strikers want the glory. It’s in their DNA.

They’re usually the flashy players who get the goals and subsequent headlines, and Harwan Alzuabidi fits the profile. The senior is New Rochelle’s best offensive weapon, but he’s an unknown commodity to most who follow Section 1 soccer because he doesn’t have the eye-popping stats to match many others.

“This is just how our system works,” Alzuabidi said. “But I’m very happy. As long as we win, that’s all that matters.”

Huguenots coach Jarohan Garcia preaches an unselfish style of play, focused on ball movement and not allowing opponents to hone in on one player. But now that the playoffs are here, he’ll take the goals however he can get them.

In Thursday’s Class AA first-round matchup against ninth-seeded Mahopac, Alzuabidi seized his opportunity. He scored both goals in a 2-0 win, sending No. 8 New Rochelle on a trip to No. 1 Mamaroneck for the quarterfinals on Monday.

New Rochelle’s Harwan Alzuabidi looks for a rebound during the Huguenots’ 2-0 win over Mahopac in the first round of the boys soccer Class AA playoffs at New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle on Thursday. Alzuabidi scored both goals.

The Huguenots lost to the Tigers twice during the regular season, but seemed to close the gap. After losing by three goals in their first meeting, the second game was a much closer 1-0 affair.

“We have a lot of depth on our team,” senior goalkeeper Danny Ayala said. “(Alzuabidi) is not the only one that can score. As the stats prove, we have more than 10 players that have scored on our team, so I believe we can beat them. Anything is possible.”

Player of the game: Harwan Alzuabidi, New Rochelle — After scoring in the 13th minute, the senior stepped up to take a free kick in the 70th and buried it to seal the win. He was active and created chances throughout the game.

“I had to step up, and I did what I did,” Alzuabidi said. “I’m very confident. I might be a little cocky sometimes, but I think I’m one of the best strikers in the section.”

Turning point: Alzuabidi gave the Huguenots some early breathing room and the defense was stout throughout the game. They allowed just two shots on goal and never really surrendered a quality scoring chance to the Indians.

“Communication is key for the defense,” Ayala said. “We moved together, we shifted together and we all played as a team. That’s why they got basically no shots.”

Stat line: New Rochelle (9-4-2) — Alzuabidi scored both goals, the first on an assist from Omar Espinoza. Ayala made two saves and the Huguenots took 21 shots. Mahopac (7-8-2) — Harry O’Shea made eight saves and the Indians took four shots.

Quotable: “We have to pick up our intensity if we want to go further,” Alzuabidi said. “We have to be much better. Our intensity has to be through the roof, because high school soccer is mostly about intensity. Whoever has more will win the game.”

It’s been over a decade since Nanuet last reached the sectional quarterfinals — 12 years, to be exact — but that drought officially ended on Thursday.

The eighth-seeded Golden Knights prevailed over No. 9 Beacon in the Class A first round, with Joe Saxton netting the decisive goal in a 3-2 overtime win. Nanuet advanced to play at No. 1 Pearl River on Monday despite losing a player due to a red card in the first half.

“It’s never easy going down a man 20 minutes in, but we were resilient, controlled the majority of possession, and never stopped battling,” coach Pete Patrikis said. “This year, the boys are doing just that — playing every game as a cohesive unit, and embracing our team motto, ‘Love, baby.’ ”

Nick Iozzo and Sean Ryan also scored and Matt Wain added two assists, including one on Saxton’s winner.

When the Briarcliff and Putnam Valley field hockey teams met during the regular season the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

So while Briarcliff was seeded seventh and the visiting Tigers 10th, Bears coach Lindsay Zekus wasn’t taking anything for granted Saturday during their Class C first-round game.

That was a good thing as the Bears edged the Tigers 2-1 to advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal against No. 2 Croton.

Teresa Marinaccio had a goal and assisted on Devon Litchfield’s goal.

Lauren Turner had a strong game for Putnam Valley with 12 saves.

But she and her team might have caught a break early in the second half when an apparent Briarcliff goal was waved off.

Zekus said video proves one of her players deflected a shot in off a penalty corner but the official didn’t see a Bear deflect it and called it a no-goal, since the ball had come from outside the scoring circle.

“That could have been really bad,” Zekus said, especially after the Tigers’ Cyera Daughtry scored soon after.

But Briarcliff hung on with goalie Jess Garlasco credited with five saves.

Briarcliff lost to Croton 4-1 earlier this season but Zekus believes her team, which was minus players due to illness and injury at that game, will be better Tuesday.

“Hopefully, it’s a totally different game,” she said.

Pearl River 1, Brewster 1 (Pearl River wins 3-1 in shootout): In a Class B first-round game at No. 8 Pearl River, Elizabeth Gilbride, Breanne Dophin and Annie Dolan scored in their 10-second, 1-vs.goalie shootouts that followed a 1-1 regulation tie and two scoreless 10-minute, 7-on-7 overtime periods. Sarah McNamee scored for Pearl River during regulation.  Brianna Sayegh scored in her shootout for No. 9 Brewster and Grace Pastore had the Bears’ regulation goal.

Kerry Gettler had 15 saves for Pearl River and Samantha Anfuso stopped 10 shots for Brewster.

Pearl River will play at No. 1 Lakeland Wednesday in the Class B quarterfinals.

John Jay-Cross River 2, Nanuet 0: In a Class B first-round game played at No. 6 John Jay, Anna Prusko had a goal and an assist and Rosie Ceisler also scored. Jenna Franchino had eight saves for No. 11 Nanuet. Hayley Martinsen had six saves for John Jay, which will play in the Class B quarterfinals Wednesday at No. 3 Somers.

Pelham 3, Harrison 0: In a first-round Class B game played at Pelham, Lindsay McNamara had a 13-save shutout, Samantha Cucciniello had a goal and an assist, and Jenna Letizia and Ashlynn Mustafa also scored. Nellie Fisher had six saves for No. 10 Harrison.

No. 7 Pelham will play in the Class B quarterfinals Wednesday at No. 2 Rye.

Dramatic final drive gives Valhalla last-second victory

As practice closed Thursday night, the Valhalla offense lined up in “NASCAR” and began to simulate its two-minute drive to glory. The Vikings were within the shadow of the goal line — an imaginary Section 1 championship on the line — when coach Steve Boyer called a roll-out pass to Evan Parker.

“I threw a perfect ball to Evan and he dropped it,” quarterback Ralph Gonzalez said. “Our team had to run extra sprints.”

With a chance to make amends Saturday, the only sprinting for Parker and his teammates came when they joined one another in celebration. The sophomore fullback scored the winning two-point conversion when he caught the pass from Gonzalez and dragged himself over the goal line to finish No. 6 Valhalla’s wild 22-21 victory at No. 3 Nanuet in the Class B quarterfinals.

The Vikings put themselves in position to win on a Gonzalez-led 15-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Williams on fourth down with 24 seconds remaining.

“It was just a storied moment,” said Gonzalez, who went 6 for 14 for 65 yards on the winning march. “It was one of those things that in 10, 20 years, you’re going to be telling everyone about it.”

The Vikings’ memory nearly became a nightmare. They had led 14-7 at halftime behind the brilliance of junior Mike Ferrara. The defense held that lead until Nanuet took advantage of two short fields.

On fourth down with 7:16 left, Thomas Fay connected with Michael O’Meara to tie it. Jake Stein then put the Golden Knights ahead 21-14 less than four minutes later.

Forced to respond, Valhalla did, slicing down the muddy field a chunk at a time. On the final fourth-down pass,  Boyer improvised and drew a corner route for Williams during a timeout. He then boldly went for two the next play, saying, “We’re not coming all this way to play for a tie.”

“I was thinking about that the whole way down the field,” said Parker, still shaking the nerves. “But that’s the way we play.”

Player of the game: Mike Ferrara, Valhalla. Before the Gonzalez/Williams/Parker heroics, Ferrara had rushed 12 times for 154 yards — including a go-ahead 80-yard touchdown — and intercepted a pass in the end zone to thwart a promising Nanuet drive.

Stat line: Valhalla (6-2) — Gonzalez finished 11 for 26 for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Parker had four catches for 48 yards and a score. Nanuet (5-3) — Stein had 18 carries for 65 yards and Connor Breit added 39 yards and a score.

Quotable: “It’s about taking that next step. Today we took another step,” Boyer said. “Hopefully next week we’ll see if we can take another step against one of the powerhouses in Class B.”

Valhalla will visit defending champ Westlake in Saturday’s semifinals, likely at 1:30 p.m.

With its playoffs over, Nanuet will travel to Pearl River at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and play the Pirates for the Little Brown Jug.
