Depleted Edgemont pulls out of playoff football game

Edgemont coach Brian Connolly talks to his players during practice in 2015. The Panthers have withdrawn from their Class B quarterfinal against Pleasantville due to safety concerns.

With just 15 healthy players and only a couple others expected to be game-ready this weekend, the Edgemont football team met Monday afternoon and decided to pull out of its Class B quarterfinal against No. 1-seeded Pleasantville.

Edgemont, which is 4-3, had earned the No. 8 seed in the opening round of Section 1’s playoffs, but attrition has depleted the roster and left the team less competitive than it was earlier this season. According to coach Brian Connolly, several second-string players and inexperienced underclassmen are among the healthy bodies.

“The bottom line is, we could’ve had 16 kids,” said Connolly, citing the minimum number of players required for a varsity game. “But we would’ve had kids that should never even be put in that position. I think we should play and go, but the kids who were there felt that it wouldn’t be right to play.”

FOOTBALL: The Week 8 high school football schedule

Connolly had feared his team wouldn’t be ready for Pleasantville after it lost a physical game 35-15 to Putnam Valley on Friday. Athletic director Anthony De Rosa contacted Section 1 on Saturday at Connolly’s request. He asked that Putnam Valley — the ninth-place team in Class B — be put in the playoffs instead. The request was denied and made official when Section 1 released its playoff matchups Saturday night.

“I knew this was a possibility,” Connolly said. “It doesn’t make anyone look good. I don’t know what we would benefit by going up to play Pleasantville.”

Pleasantville, which is 7-0 after beating No. 2 Westlake 38-35 on Saturday, will advance to the semifinals on Oct. 28 or 29. The Panthers will meet the winner of No. 4 Ardsley and No. 5 Albertus Magnus.

Athletic director John Bauerlein said Pleasantville would not play an opponent other than the one it was assigned to play — Edgemont.

“That’s how it works,” Bauerlein said. “It stinks that we’re not playing, but why would we play a game that shouldn’t be played an risk injury to our kids? If it’s not the eighth seed, we’re not going to play another team.”

Connolly said he doesn’t expect Edgemont to play again this season.

“I told them that I was worried about the safety of my kids,” Connolly said. “If they would allow us to play and we were healthy, we’d like to play in Week 9, but I don’t think (Section 1) will let us play again.”

Byram Hills' Ryan Noel wins on skill, not size

Ryan Noel (9) of Byram Hills and Harrison’s Gabe Ferrierra (25) battle for control of the ball during boys soccer game at Byram Hills High School in Armonk Oct. 17, 2016. Byram Hills defeats Harrison 3-1.

ARMONK – Skill is more important than size.

That’s been a motto of sorts for junior Ryan Noel, who stands at just 5-foot-3 but has an undeniable presence on the soccer pitch for Byram Hills.

“That’s my attitude towards soccer,” he said. “I just try to be as technical as I can, and play as fast and simple as I can. Since I’m smaller, I know that I have to go harder into tackles, which is what I aim to do. It’s very effective.”

As he has been all season, Noel was one of the most active players for the Bobcats on Monday. He scored the third and final goal in a 3-1 win over Harrison, which gave Byram its 11th league title in 16 years under coach Matty Allen. The win finished off a 12-2-2 regular season and will likely result in a top-three seed in the Class A bracket.

In their previous meeting with the Huskies, who have had a strong season in their own right at 11-4-1, the Bobcats trailed at halftime before rallying for a 3-2 win. Ryan’s older brother David Noel scored twice in that one, but it looks like he could miss the playoffs with a knee injury.

Even without its second-leading scorer on Monday, Byram won in more convincing fashion, allowing Harrison just one shot on goal in the second half.

“This was an extremely important game for us,” Ryan Noel said. “I think our team has definitely improved since the last time that we played them. Losing my brother was obviously hard since he scored two in the last 10 minutes of the game last time, but it shows that we’re a very good squad with a lot of depth.”

Player of the game: Jack Beer, Byram Hills— Noel had the final goal to clinch it, but it was Beer who initially put the Bobcats ahead. He placed his first goal into the top right corner of the net in the 20th minute and added a second on a penalty kick in the 38th.

“It’s awesome watching him play, and it’s really fun playing with him,” Noel said of Beer. “He’s just exceptional and really easy to play with. You know he’s always going to put one in the back of the net when you need one.”

Turning point: Harrison had a few chances in the opening 10 minutes, but from there, it was all Byram. By the time freshman Spencer Weinhoff found Beer for the first goal, the Bobcats were clearly in control.

Stat line: Byram Hills (12-2-2) — Beer scored twice and Noel had one goal. Weinhoff had an assist and Matt Groll made four saves. The Bobcats took 21 shots. Harrison (11-4-1) — Gabe Ferreira scored on an assist from Kevin Aguirre in the 78th minute. Noah Bender made nine saves and the Huskies took six shots.

Quotable: “This is definitely one of the deepest years for Class A that we’ve seen,” Beer said. “I just have to say that we’re ready for the challenge. We know that if we play our best and surpass the intensity of any team that we can come out victorious.”

Molly Banks' goal after time expires lifts Mamaroneck over Scarsdale

MAMARONECK – How evenly matched were the Mamaroneck and Scarsdale field hockey teams that played Monday for the second time this season?

Consider that after a scoreless first half, Scarsdale scored, only to have Mamaroneck answer 64 seconds later.

And then just 2:24 after Mamaroneck took a 2-1 lead, Scarsdale answered back.

That was with just 1:59 on the clock and the game had “tie” written all over it.

But Mamaroneck, whose only loss this season was a 4-0 shutout against Scarsdale in early September, wasn’t going to be satisfied with a tie.

And on a penalty corner called with 18 seconds left and played after time expired, junior Molly Banks nudged in a rebound inside the left post to give host Mamaroneck a memorable 3-2 win.

“We ran our six, which is one of our stronger plays,” Banks said. “We move the ball across the circle to throw off the ‘D’. My job is to be on the post, ready for anything.

“Knowing we were either going to win or tie was very motivating,” Banks added. “I really think everyone put in extra effort during that play.”

The win boosted Mamaroneck to 13-1-2 on the season.

Scarsdale fell to 13-2-1.

“They cut to the ball much better,” Scarsdale coach Sharon Rosenthal said of the Tigers. “Mental mistakes cost us that game and Mamaroneck plays to the end.”

Scarsdale’s Emma Schwartz opened the scoring with 25:17 left off an Erin Nicholas assist.

Elizabeth Brissette tied the score off a penalty corner with 24:21 left. Paige Danehy had the assist.

Two minutes after Scarsdale just missed scoring, shooting just wide off the left post, Brissette scored with 4:23 to play off a penalty corner and another Danehy feed.

But then Jilly Mehlman tied the game 2-2, with Nicholas assisting.

Player of the game: Nicholas had multiple interceptions to go with her two assists and Brissette not only had the first two Tiger goals but started multiple rushes down the sidelines. Still, Banks gets the nod with her winning score.

Turning point: Banks’ goal after time expired was clearly the turning point.

Stat line: Scarsdale goalie Lila Horwood had five saves. Tiger keeper Charlotte Mackie stopped four shots.

Mamaroneck dominated in corners, 9-2.

Quotables: “These girls never say die. They just play the game and never give up,” said Mamaroneck coach John Savage, who was particularly pleased all three Tiger goals came off corners.

“Scarsdale is a great team and I think we’re a great team,” he said, noting the two could face each other again in sectional play.

Banks said her team’s passing was better than it had been the first time it played Scarsdale. But she added there was more to it than that.

“We had more heart and energy and were ready to get revenge,” she said.

Somers feels the sting of a rare loss

SOMERS – The emotions on the sideline were not completely unexpected.

The losses have been few and far between for Somers over the last three years, so there were some tears Monday following a 2-1 overtime loss to Arlington on Senior Day.

It was only the second loss for the Class A power in three seasons.

“We went into this game knowing we had to perform, knowing it was going to be a really big test,” senior defender Mary Murphy said. “We have to do better. We need to go into the next game and play with a lot of heart, too.”

The Admirals were a step behind for most of the mandatory overtime periods, but won a critical 50-50 ball and took full advantage.

Molly Feighan netted the winner.

She came upon the ball in a crowd and fired a shot from the left corner, placing the ball perfectly in the far top corner with a minute to go in the second OT.

“To be honest, I didn’t even see what happened,” Feighan said. “I kicked the ball and in it went, then I was on the ground. It was a really, really good team effort. I’m so excited about what I think we have going on moving forward.”

With good reason.

Arlington (13-2) will go into sectionals this weekend as a Class AA favorite. Michaela Fasolino had the Admirals up 1-0 when she got behind the defense with 27 minutes to play in regulation.

That goal seemed to inspire the Tuskers (12-1-1), who picked up the intensity and began to manufacture scoring chances. Jenna Menta tucked a corner kick from Ciara Ostrander just inside the post with two minutes to go in regulation.

Somers was a different team after the goal.

“They’re a great team and I thought they outplayed us,” Tuskers coach Paul Saia said. “We outplayed them in the overtime, but things didn’t go our way. For the first 80 minutes, they were the better team and deserved to win.

“You know, hopefully it’s a wake-up call.”

Player of the game: Only a handful of the 21 saves Arlington goalie Becky Gold came up were routine.

“It was a big team effort,” Feighan said. “It started on the back with Becky. … They are a really, really strong team. We’ve played them in the past and haven’t gotten the result, but we got it this time.”

Turning point: Gold and Co. were under pressure most of the overtime, but did not flinch. Somers went into scramble mode, hoping to make something happen as time grew short and was eventually caught out of position.

Stat line: Kendall Feighan assisted the first Admirals goal. … Lauren Chiriboga made six saves for the Tuskers and Lauren Jockimo made 13 saves.

Quotable: “I take full responsibility for that last goal,” Murphy said. “It’s the sweeper’s job to make sure that ball doesn’t trickle through and I just couldn’t hang with her on that one. She is a great player and showed it there.”

Tappan Zee defeats Pearl River 3-2 in overtime in boys soccer action at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

The official Section 1 playoff seeds will be determined tomorrow, but who likes waiting? I sure as heck don’t.

Since we’ve been tracking records for every team in Section 1 all season, we have the information to figure out the seeds. And that’s exactly what we’ve done. Along with the help of dedicated coaches Tim Hourahan of Lakeland and Sandro Prosperino of Valhalla, we’ve crunched the numbers and come up with seeding projections for the 2016 sectional tournament.

I want to stress that these are not official, so please don’t go making any plans just yet. I do feel confident, though, that these are what they’ll look like when all is said and done, barring a minor change or two.

Now that we’ve gone over that important disclaimer, here are the projections…

All right, folks. I’ve had some time to process the Section 1 boys soccer playoff brackets for each class and I’m ready to make my annual predictions. I can guarantee some will be wrong, and if so, I encourage you to give me grief about it. That’s part of what makes this time of year so much fun.

You can watch me write out my picks on the whiteboard and explain them in the video above, but I’ve also typed them up for your reading pleasure. Think you can do better? Let me know who you like in each class.

Mamaroneck and Yorktown are shown doing battle on Sept. 12. Vin Mercogliano has the Tigers capturing the Section 1 Class AA title.

Breaking it down  — There were a few different ways I could have gone with this, but I came to the conclusion in the last week or so that this is Mamaroneck’s year. The Tigers are loaded with senior talent and experience, and I like their path to the title game. They entered the season with high expectations and didn’t let it deter them, cruising to a 14-1-1 regular season. If you break down every position, it’s hard to find a glaring weakness for Mamaroneck, which explains why it’s the No. 1 team in our rankings and in the state. … I do like a couple of first-round upsets. Every year there is a 12-seed that makes some noise, and I think it could be Port Chester this year, which is why I’m picking the Rams over Scarsdale. I also like John Jay-EF over Suffern, mainly because JJ-EF beat the Mounties 4-1 already this season. … As for who will play Mamaroneck in the final, I’m taking Horace Greeley. The Quakers always seem to step up come playoff time, and the fact that they swept Yorktown this year — most recently with a 4-0 win — bodes well for their chances if that turns out to be the semifinal matchup.

Final

No. 2 Byram Hills over No. 1 Pearl River

Breaking it down  — This was the only class where, when I started filling in my bracket, I had no idea who I was going to take. I’ve written about the improved depth that we’re seeing in Class A this season, and I think there are a handful of teams with a legitimate shot at the crown. I let the matchups dictate my picks, and after I was done, I was left with Byram as my champ. Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at last year’s picks, and it turns out I picked the same final — Byram vs. Pearl River. I wasn’t right then, so maybe I’m just being stubborn. But I do believe that the Bobcats have all of the pieces to win their second title in three years because of an exceptional defense, an experienced goalkeeper in Matt Groll and the most dynamic player in the section in Jack Beer. … I took the boring route by choosing all home teams in the first round and quarterfinals — who wants to bet I’ll be wrong on that one? — with the toughest game to pick probably being Lakeland and Tappan Zee. I love the way the Hornets have been playing with eight straight wins and five straight shutouts, but it would difficult to pick them over Pearl River in the semis considering their recent history.

First round

No. 1 Rye Neck (bye)

No. 2 Hastings (bye)

No. 3 Bronxville over No. 14 Westlake

No. 4 Blind Brook over No. 13 Putnam Valley

No. 5 Valhalla over No. 12 Dobbs Ferry

No. 11 Albertus Magnus over No. 6 Pleasantville

No. 10 Edgemont over No. 7 Briarcliff

No. 8 Croton-Harmon over No. 9 Irvington

Quarterfinals

No. 1 Rye Neck over No. 8 Croton-Harmon

No. 3 Bronxville over No. 11 Albertus Magnus

No. 5 Valhalla over No. 4 Blind Brook

Semis

No. 1 Rye Neck over No. 5 Valhalla

No. 2 Hastings over No. 3 Bronxville

Final

No. 2 Hastings over No. 1 Rye Neck

Breaking it down  — If we’re being honest, anything other than a Hastings vs. Rye Neck rematch in the final would be somewhat of a surprise. Each team won 14 games this season, while no other Class B team has more than 10. The Yellow Jackets and the Panthers have been dominant, and from a talent standpoint, I think they have distinct advantages. Does that mean an upset is out of the question? Of course not. But I think this is the matchup that most people expect to — and want to — see. … Although it’s been a year since Rye Neck and Hastings last played, I do think the Yellow Jackets’ 4-0 win in the 2015 section final carries some weight. That game wasn’t even close, and in my opinion, Hastings is even better this year. The Jackets have added five former U.S. Academy players to their roster this season, which has elevated the play of the entire team. They’re more dangerous offensively and more skilled when it comes to possessing the ball for extended periods. I like Hastings for the repeat.

Class C

Outbracket

No. 4 Hamilton over No. 5 Tuckahoe

Semis

No. 1 North Salem over No. 4 Hamilton

No. 2 Solomon Schechter over No. 3 Haldane

Final

No. 2 Solomon Schechter over No. 1 North Salem

Breaking it down  — Even though there are only five teams in Class C, I believe it will be very competitive. Haldane, which is the 3-seed, beat North Salem twice this season, which tells me there is no runaway favorite. I’ve heard good things about North Salem, and the Tigers have picked up some quality wins in recent weeks, but I’m having trouble picking any team other than Schechter. The Lions went all the way to the state final last season and have several key players back, most notably Jonathan Rand, Miles Ogihara and goalkeeper Noah Dunn. The program has been elevated in recent years, and these players are battle-tested. That’s why I’m taking Schechter to win it again.

Player of the week (Oct. 16): Yvette Burcescu, Panas

You know you’re good when you can miss pool play at a tournament and still take home MVP honors.

Panas junior Yvette Burcescu continued her domination of the section with a sensational showing at the annual Panther Invitational, leading the Panthers to their second consecutive tournament title. Burcescu, the reigning Journal News/lohud Westchester/Putnam player of the year, has developed a wicked jump serve that she was working on last year.

When your jump serve is so lethal it freezes your opponent…

Panas is currently the top-ranked Class A team and second-ranked team overall in the state.

Honor Roll:

– Julianna Bottarini, Panas: The senior setter broke the program’s all-time assists mark this week, surpassing Allie Patriciello. Bottarini went on to be named all-tournament at the Panther Invitational, where the Panthers took home top honors for the second consecutive season.

– Hailie Festa, Tappan Zee: Even without starting setter Hayley McCloskey, the Dutchies managed to pull off the upset against undefeated Nyack. Festa registered 17 kills in the thrilling four-set win.

– Maura McGlynn, Ursuline: A talented sophomore on the rise in the Koalas program, McGlynn tallied 20 kills in a loss to Pelham and had a 15-kill, 12-dig performance in a win over Scarsdale.

Laine Peterson, Westlake: The powerful hitter had 20 kills in a five-set win over Ardsley, which could end up being a preview of the Class B section final.

– Sydney Shotkoski, Pelham: The talented setter has really been coming into her own as the season has progressed, which is a direct correlation of the Pelicans’ surge of success. Shotkoski had 28 assists and 12 digs in a sweep of Ursuline and 27 assists in a five-set win over Rye.

Journal News/lohud.com volleyball beat reporter Mike Zacchio will pick a player of the week to be announced every Sunday. This year will also include a five-player “Honor Roll,” which highlights other outstanding weeks that deserved recognition. Announcements will usually be posted at noon. Please try to submit all nominations by Saturday night (or sooner, if the team does not have a tournament/match over the weekend).

Past winners

Sept. 11: Madison Monahan, North Rockland (Read)

Sept. 18: Katie McLoughlin, Ursuline (Read)

Sept. 25: Rachel Darius, New Rochelle (Read)

Oct. 2: Jade Iadarola, Rye (Read)

Oct. 9: Mychael Vernon, Ossining (Read)

How to nominate a player for #POTW

Fans, coaches, players, etc. can nominate players via Twitter (@Zacchio_LoHud), email (mzacchio@lohud.com), or text (if you have my number). I will also select an Honor Roll consisting of upwards of five honorable mentions, so that they’re accomplishments will also be recognized. The final #POTW of the season will be announced Oct. 23.

Please include the players’ name, school, grade, position and stats for the week (all games from Monday through Saturday). Tournament performances (all-tournament team, tournament MVP, team win, etc.) count towards this award, even if you don’t have exact stats.

Example: Brooke Davis, Tree Hill H.S., Sr., OH: Brooke had 48 kills, 20 aces, 60 assists and 62 digs in the Ravens’ wins this week over Catalano, Keller, and McFadden High. She was also MVP of the Whitey Durham Invitational on Saturday.

Disclaimer

There is no science or exact formula to picking a winner, but everything counts — including team’s performance and strength of schedule. It’s not just a numbers game. A girl having a great week against tough competition will probably win over a girl who had an unconscious week against week competition.

There is no limit to how many times a player can win during the season. I will do my best to pick the best candidate. Sometimes that will be a repeat winner. I’ll try to spread the love as much as I can, but as the saying goes, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.”

Girls soccer: Vikings, Pirates happy with 0-0 tie

Clarkstown South and Pearl River had each played three games in the last four days, so when regulation ended in Tuesday’s game, both sides were happy to accept a 0-0 draw.

“Any time we play Pearl River it’s going to be a tough game. We were fortunate that they didn’t score off one of our mistakes,” Vikings coach Christopher Kelly said. “Our goalkeeper (Elianna Murphy) made a few big saves for us today to keep the game scoreless.”

Pearl River was equally happy to leave with the tie.

“I’m really proud of my girls, we just had a really tough loss (Monday) to Rye. They gave a really full effort today,” Pirates coach Tim Peabody said. “We had good opportunities to score, and our touches on the ball were really good today.”

The game marked the final one in the regular season for both teams. Despite having a young squad Peabody viewed this season as a success.

“Our year was up and down. We have a very young team, so there were a lot of bumps,” Peabody said. “We had a tough schedule so fatigue was a factor for us. We play in a really tough league. Every day you have to be good and come to play. Look at today: you had two good teams playing a tough game. That’s what it’s like every day.”

Pirates keeper Katherine Carstenson makes a save during Tuesday's game. Clarkstown South and Pearl River played to a 0-0 tie at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack.

The Vikings had a rough start to the season but were able to get it together to have a strong regular season.

“We had a really tough schedule to open the season, but we played really well most of the year. I’m really proud of my team. They played with great effort all season,’’ Kelly said. “Going into the postseason we have to stay connected better on the field. Most importantly we just have to keep playing hard.”

Player of the game: The goalie for each side can split player of the game honors: Pirates keeper Katherine Carstenson and Vikings goalie Elianna Murphy.

Turning point: With four minutes left in the first half Pearl River’s Kate McNally had a breakaway opportunity. She likely would have scored if Carstenson had not come off her line to apply pressure. McNally shot the ball from the top of the box with Carstenson sliding at her, but the ball hit the cross bar and went out of bounds.

Stat Line: Carstenson had 10 saves while Murphy made 11.

Quotable: “ We agreed to end the game in a tie and not play overtime,” Kelly said. “ We both had played a lot of games this week.”

Ursuline ends Suffern surge and Govaert leads Rye over Nyack as teams scramble for sectional placement

$

The clock is ticking on the regular field hockey season with games having to be played by Wednesday, and Thursday slated as the day sectional seedings are determined.

That means by Thursday afternoon or night, Section 1 fans, coaches and players will know whether their team has qualified and, if so, who they will play, when and where to begin the playoffs.

Some teams are scrambling to get enough qualifying points and others are aiming for additional points to lift them into more favorable seeds, so Tuesday and Wednesday gain added importance.

Below is a recap of Tuesday’s action.

Imagine 40 years gone by, but respect and, moreover, love remain undiminished.

Imagine kids, always willing to go the extra mile on the playing field, now, firmly planted in middle age, going many hundreds of miles to embrace the warmth of a sweet memory.

To embrace a woman who brought them smiles and laughter well before she delivered them a Section 1 championship and an undefeated season.

Nine players from Fox Lane’s 1976 field hockey team returned last weekend to be with their coach.

Joanne St. George is 82. But, going strong, she joked and reminisced Saturday night during a dinner for her at Mardino’s restaurant in Mount Kisco. That followed breakfast at the Mount Kisco Diner with her former players, former Fox Lane athletic director Rod Mergardt and good friend and former John Jay volleyball coach Missi Larzelere. Those events sandwiched an afternoon watching the current Fox Lane team, coached by former St. George player Kim Gigante, shut out Carmel.

That is, after St. George delivered a pep talk.

Leslie Costa, who played field hockey on scholarship at the University of Bridgeport after playing for Fox Lane coach Joanne St. George, laughs with St. George during the dinner at which she was honored. St. George is holding a memory book put together by Costa and other members of St. George's 1976 champion team.

Leslie Costa, who played field hockey on scholarship at the University of Bridgeport after playing for Fox Lane coach Joanne St. George, laughs with St. George during the dinner at which she was honored. St. George is holding a memory book put together by Costa and other members of St. George’s 1976 champion team.

St. George, whose fans at the field included former players/former Fox Lane coaches Heather Miller and Beth Staropoli (the current Fox Lane AD), wore a silver field hockey necklace.

Her former players unabashedly wore their hearts on their sleeves.

St. George was born in Mount Kisco and still lives there. But her players joined her from homes as far away as Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Emily Kohnstamm Beal, who lives in Massachusetts, wanted to honor the woman who inspired her and the others.

In a sense, it was her late brother Ken’s idea.

Ken, a 1964 Fox Lane graduate, died in 2013 of pancreatic cancer. Beforehand, he gave his sister a gift – a few words of perspective.

If there’s someone you’ve ever loved, he said, you need to stay in touch.

That thought pushed Kohnstamm Beal to the phone and to the coach she said she probably thinks of every day.

“There was lots of love and teamwork and lots of great memories,” she said of that time.

Now there are even more.

The Kelly triplets – Katherine, now of South Carolina, and Holly and Tara of Tennessee – came up.

Holly teaches and also coaches lacrosse at Farragut High in Knoxville.

“I only dream to have the impact and influence she had on her students and players,” she said.

The group compiled a memory book for St. George with a photo of her from 40 years ago on its cover. Inside, all nine players, including Anne Gilson of Virginia, Suzanne “Suzy” Behr of Oklahoma, Kate Fissell of Pennsylvania, Leslie Costa of Connecticut and Claire Pulise Birney of Pennsylvania, have a page of 1976 photos of themselves and another for photos from today with their families and friends. Each also penned a personal note to St. George.

“It set me back a little bit,” St. George admitted.

They also gave her a plaque that speaks of her instilling values in them to “become champions in life.”

“Your love, inspiration and coaching live on in each of us,” the plaque reads.

“She had a kindness. She really was different. You really felt she wanted the best for all her kids,” Fissell said.

Behr remembered St. George’s “fairness” – her working to get everyone playing time.

“She won with great grace,” said Holly Kelly, one of four players from the team to play college field hockey, no minor feat in 1976 or, for that matter, any time.

But St. George, who retired from teaching physical education in 1993 but continued coaching until 2005, also had fun then, singing those goofy songs bus rides ignite in teenage girls.

Saturday night, before attending church the next morning with six players and then going to brunch, where 1976 teammate Marilyn Salvati and Staropoli joined the group, St. George grinned as a waiter, bearing a cake, serenaded and kissed her.

Her players said they loved her. She said she loved them, too, and they had made her life fun.

“You don’t realize what you do when you’re doing it,” St. George said. “I’m just happy they feel the way they do.”

And the way they do was made very clear.

“She’s everything that’s good in sports,” Behr said.
