John Jay stumbles, but refuses to fall against Harrison

CROSS RIVER – One thought stuck with a startled Thor Adamec when John Jay stumbled in the opening minutes.

And it proved to be motivational.

“The only thing going through my mind was the fact that if we lose the game were out of the playoffs,” Adamec said. “Everyone had to step up. Nobody wanted to be done. We’re looking to go all the way.”

Harrison came looking for an upset in the Class A playoff qualifier, but momentum was quickly taken away. The Indians stormed back, posting a 31-12 win and setting up a quarterfinal showdown against Rye.

“Coming out of the gate, I don’t know, we seemed a little flat,” John Jay safety Jackson Rieger said. “They kind of caught us by surprise, running some power football. We weren’t ready for that.

“Not only were we down 12-0, it seemed like everything was going against us.”

Austin Evans ran straight up the middle for a pair of Huskies touchdowns in the first seven minutes, but the highlight reel ended there.

Jaelen Ferrebee capped an 80-yard Indians drive with a 16-yard spring into the end zone with 2:04 to go in the opening quarter. Shahe Katchadurian nosed across the goal line from the 3 with 10:21 to go in the half one play after Harrison failed to recover a bad snap.

In an instant, the Indians were in control and holding a 14-12 lead

Bryce Ford squeezed into the end zone before the intermission to extend the lead and Katchadurian bulled in again in the opening minutes of the second half.

It’s the first time John Jay’s left tackle has scored multiple touchdowns in a game.

“That helps keep things really interesting,” said Katchadurian, who plays fullback in short-yardage formations. “I like it. Ever since I was little, I was too big to be a skill guy so it’s fun to get my hands on the ball.”

Player of the game: Nobody had more of an impact on both sides of the ball than Katchadurian, a 6-foot-2 junior who is carrying 250 pounds. He scored twice and helped Adamec have a big day running the ball.

Turning point: Harrison had an opportunity to cut into a 21-12 deficit and was 15 yards from the end zone in the final minutes of the first half, but the Huskies were thrown for a loss on three straight plays and Rieger broke up a fourth-down pass.

Stat line: Adamec ran for 161 yards on 24 carries. … Evans had 80 yard on 15 carries for the Huskies. … The Indians made a dozen tackles for a loss.

Quotable: “Rye is a good team, a good program,” Rieger said. “You hear about them every year so it’ll be a hard week of practice.”

Lopez leads Horsemen past Eastchester, 28-0

EASTCHESTER – Both Sleepy Hollow and Eastchester entered Saturday’s game with identical records. What looked like an even matchup on paper became a blowout in favor of the visitors, as the Horseman rolled to a 28-0 victory in a Class A qualifying round game.

Sleepy Hollow, led by running back Mike Lopez, dominated on the ground the entire game. Lopez ended the game with 125 yards rushing, as well as a rushing touchdown. Lopez finished with 146 total yards and helped his team control the ball on offense.

“Lopez is a warrior, he kept us going all game. We just attached the wagon to him and said get us there,” Horsemen coach Steven Borys said. “ He’s one of the hardest-working players we’ve ever had in this program.”

Sleepy Hollow’s Issac Newland stiff-arms an Eastchester defender during the Horsemen’s 28-0 win over the Eagles in a Class A qualifying round game at Eastchester High School on Saturday.

Lopez didn’t want any of the credit for his performance.

“Our offensive line does all the work for me,” Lopez said. “During one of my big runs our right guard blocked a guy who was right behind me, who I didn’t see. He just yelled at me to keep going. My linemen are awesome.”

While the offense for Sleepy Hollow was great, their defensive performance should not be overlooked. They kept Eastchester off the scoreboard, and stopped them on fourth-and-short twice.

“They run a great option game, which our guys were able to completely shut down,” Borys said. “ We just made a ton of big plays. We made tackles that we needed to make, and we looked really athletic out there.”

Eastchester coach Fred DiCarlo wasn’t happy with the play of his defense.

“It’s not really about our ability, we just didn’t come to play,” DiCarlo said. “They made some big plays, and our guys missed a lot of tackles. We’ll have to play with a lot more effort in our next game.”

Player of the game: Mike Lopez ripped off big run after big run. Whenever the Horsemen needed to convert on third down Lopez came through.

Turning point: Two minutes into the fourth quarter the Horsemen had a fourth-and-17 on Eastchester’s 30-yard line. Sleepy Hollow quarterback Sean McCarthy handed the ball to Issac Newland, who passed it back to McCarthy, who caught it for the first down.

Stat line: McCarthy threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns, to Malik Jones and Jahmaali James. Travis Cowels and Mike Lopez had one rushing touchdown each.

Quotable: “We’ve been doing that play since Pop Warner,” McCarthy said. “ Issac to me, I was happy coach let us do that.”

Spring Valley takes advantage of call to win thriller

HILLBURN – In a game where nothing came easy, Spring Valley probably needed a fortuitous bounce or two. The Tigers got one to tie Fox Lane, then took advantage of what appeared to be a blown call in the final minutes.

It resulted into a wild closing sequence that allowed No. 6 Spring Valley to survive and win a controversial 17-14 Class AA qualifying round game over No. 11 Fox Lane at Torne Valley Field Saturday.

For the second time this year, kicker Estive Bustos-Cevallos drilled the winning field goal. This came from 25 yards out on the final play of the game — just three weeks to the day of his winning kick that beat Port Chester.

Spring Valley's Michael Maynes stiff-arms Fox Lane's Nathan Lee in the Tigers' 17-14 win in a Class AA qualifying round game at Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn on Saturday.

Spring Valley’s Michael Maynes stiff-arms Fox Lane’s Nathan Lee in the Tigers’ 17-14 win in a Class AA qualifying round game at Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn on Saturday.

“The kid has ice water in his veins,” said Spring Valley coach Andrew Delva, whose team will travel to Clarkstown South in next week’s quarterfinals. “He dreams about this moment. He talks about it all the time with the little English he knows. He wanted this and he got it.”

FOOTBALL: Bustos-Cevallos lifts Spring Valley to a 3-0 win

The kick came during an emotional final 90 seconds. Fox Lane was incensed after its punt appeared to hit the leg of a Spring Valley player but was awarded to the Tigers by officials. The Foxes would’ve had possession inside Spring Valley territory. Instead, after a long conference among the officials, it was awarded to the Tigers at the 37.

“The referees blew it,” Fox Lane coach Bill Broggy said. “It was so easy to see. You can see I’m a little upset about that. It’s ridiculous. It was so obvious. And those officials didn’t see it?”

Spring Valley’s Michael Maynes broke loose for a 49-yard run on the next play. The Tigers ran up the middle on the next three plays to burn clock and set up the Bustos-Cevallos kick.

Player of the game: Isaiah Dean, Spring Valley. Before the final sequence, the senior delivered the biggest play of the game. He sparked the struggling Tigers by returning a fumble 85 yards for the game-tying touchdown on the final play of the third quarter.

“My father once told me that offense sells tickets, but defense wins game,” said Dean, a defensive back. “That’s exactly what happened today. Our defense came through and picked up the offense and we executed from there.”

Stat line:Spring Valley (6-1) — Dean had nine carries for 99 yards and a touchdown. Maynes also finished with 99 yards on the ground. Fox Lane (3-4) — Tanner More had 25 carries for 96 yards. He scored two touchdowns in the opening 3:42. Spring Valley fumbled the opening kickoff at its 5 and had a punt from deep in its territory travel backward to end its first possession.

Quotable: “They never give up,” Delva said. “All the adversity we’ve dealt with, our star player down, they just keep playing no matter what. Our guys keep fighting.”

Football roundup: Pleasantville upends Westlake in final seconds

Pleasantville needed only a punt return for a touchdown, a blocked field goal, two blocked punts, three critical stops in the final minutes and then a field goal with 2.5 seconds remaining to post a 38-35 win over Westlake.

No big deal.

The undefeated Panthers locked up the top seed in Class B going into the playoffs. A rematch with the Wildcats is possible if not likely.

“I don’t know who’s going to stop them,” Pleasantville coach Tony Becerra said. “I’m not looking past anyone. If we’re fortunate to get into a sectional championship game, I’ll worry about Westlake then.”

Jack Howe kicked a 25-yard field in the final seconds.

Pleasantville’s quarterback threw for 108 yards and one touchdown, ran for another touchdown and was also 5 for 5 on PATS.

Charlie McPhee got the Panthers on top 35-28 when he scored on an 8-yard run with 8:58 to play, but Joseph Ferri got Westlake even when he got loose for a 25-yard touchdown run.

There were some decisions to make on fourth down after Howe absorbed a nasty hit and had to leave momentarily.

“We thought about running a fake punt, but Jack is our punter so that wasn’t really an option,” Becerra said. “We decided to go with a pooch punt from an offensive formation and pinned them around the 10-yard line.”

Pleasantville’s defense came up big, forced a punt and Howe came back to guide the offense, which picked up a few yards before the Panthers set up for the field goal.

Dey with hat trick as Fox Lane wins big on special day; Corace nets three in Mahopac win

The top of the field hockey rankings got a bit tighter and juggled Saturday with Mamaroneck’s 1-1 tie with Lakeland. (See Deb Schechter story: http://www.lohud.com/story/sports/high-school/lohud-field-hockey/2016/10/15/field-hockey-mamaroneck-snaps-lakeland-streak-1-1-tie/91965942/)

The tie was headline-worthy since every Lakeland’s games against a New York opponent had ended in a win since at tie against Putnam Valley back in 2010.

But there were, of course, other noteworthy games played Saturday.

Consider that Fox Lane convincingly beat Carmel on the day it and nine players from the 1976 undefeated Fox team honored longtime coach Joanne St. George, who retired from coaching in 2005.

Joanne St. George (r), whose 1976 Fox Lane team went undefeated, with nine of those players and the current Fox Lane team.

Joanne St. George (r), whose 1976 Fox Lane team went undefeated, with nine of those players and the current Fox Lane team.

The group on hand also included three other Fox Lane field hockey coaches, who played for Fox Lane, then coached there. They were Heather Miller, coached by St. George and by current athletic director Beth Staropoli; Starapoli, who was coached by St. George; and current varsity coach Kim Gigante, who was coached by all three women.

St. George, 82, a Mount Kisco native, was taken to breakfast before the game and to dinner afterward. (My column this Wednesday will be about her day and the nine women from her 1976 team who returned to New York to honor her.)

Current Fox Lane coach Kim Gigante and former coaches Heather Miller, Joanne St. George and Beth Staropoli, Fox Lane's current athletic director.

The contest was also Fox Lane’s Pink Game, meaning the team raised money to fight breast cancer — $546 in all, although Gigante said the kids aren’t through and plan to increase that amount this week through an in-school bake sale.

Below are recaps of Saturday’s action, beginning with the Fox Lane game.

Fox Lane 8, Carmel 0: Olivia Dey had a hat trick and two assists and Bridgit Connors scored twice and had an assist.

Tigers' tie with Lakeland vaults them into tie at No. 2

$

In the past week, Lakeland took the field and didn’t win – twice.

The world didn’t explode, but the field hockey world, anyway, took notice.

One game was a 0-0 tie with a Darien, Connecticut. But the one that really drew attention was Saturday’s 1-1 tie with Mamaroneck.

Lakeland remains undefeated and remains The Journal News’ top-ranked team.

Lakeland's Emily Kness, left, and Mamaroneck's Paige Danehy chase down a ball during their game in Mamaroneck Saturday.

Lakeland’s Emily Kness, left, and Mamaroneck’s Paige Danehy chase down a ball during their game in Mamaroneck Saturday.

But Mamaroneck’s effort lifted the Tigers into a tie at the No. 2 spot.

Valhalla slipped a hair from a tie for the No. 10 spot after losing to Bronxville in a game the Broncos largely dominated in the second half.

The Vikings may be on the outside looking in but they’re right at the door. And 8-4-2 Suffern, which is starting to come on strong, also isn’t far back.

Rankings:

1. Lakeland: A team that’s 12-0-2 remains the top team. Deservedly so. But the impact of the loss of five All-State players from last year’s undefeated/untied team is finally becoming more apparent, particularly on offensive penalty corners, a previous strength. The Hornets have had multiple chances to cash in and haven’t. Maybe it’s a little slump. Maybe it’s a problem. Regardless, while its fans may be in shock, Lakeland, the winner of seven straight state titles, remains the area’s best team.

2. (Tie) Scarsdale and Mamaroneck: In all likelihood, one of these teams will find itself in the No. 3 spot Monday night. That’s because 13-1-1 Scarsdale, which stunned Mamaroneck 4-0 early in the season, travels to the Tigers for a must-see rematch Monday at 5 p.m. Both teams have done nothing but improve during the season. Mamaroneck is 12-1-2 with ties against Wilton, Connecticut, and Lakeland. (Scarsdale: PR 2; Mamaroneck: PR 3)

4. Rye: The Garnets didn’t look like much on paper in August, not with so many losses to graduation. But they’re now a force, and with Lakeland’s minor stumbles last week, they have to be thinking the sectional upset they didn’t get last year just might be possible this time around. (PR 4)

5. Bronxville: The Broncos have speed, stick-handling and strong game sense throughout their lineup. That was evident when they pulled away in the second half against a very good Valhalla team last week. (PR 5)

6. Horace Greeley: The 11-4 Quakers have lost mostly to the very top teams. Scoring is still a problem. Greeley should net more than two or three goals against so-so teams but isn’t doing that. Still its defense and record are strong. (PR 7)

7. Clarkstown South: With a tie against a solid but not-yet-top-10 Suffern team, the Vikings slip one notch. Still, at 11-2-1, this is a team that can do damage in sectionals. (PR 6)

8. Somers: In a perfect world, the Tuskers would face Clarkstown South, Horace Greeley and Croton so it would be much more obvious which teams belong ranked where. But Somers did as expected last week, routing Lourdes, and, with a 12-2-1 record, it’s deserving of the No. 8 spot. (PR 8)

9. Croton: The 13-1 Tigers may be the one team that isn’t getting the respect it’s due. Its only loss was to No. 5 Bronxville. But, as noted before, deserving or not of a higher ranking, strength of schedule plays against them. (PR 9)

10. Nyack: The Indians are 9-3-2. They hang on in the top 10 despite a tie last week vs. Suffern, in part because Suffern is proving it’s no pushover, also tying Clarkstown South. (PR 10T)

Lohud boys soccer rankings

Records as of Sunday, Oct. 16

1. Mamaroneck (13-1-1) — The Tigers have locked up the No. 1 seed in Class AA and they’ll finish the regular season as the top team in our rankings. It was a rough final week for former No. 1 Yorktown, but Mamaroneck keeps chugging along. The Tigers have gone 10-0-1 in their last 11 and will enter the playoffs as the favorite. Previous ranking: 2

2. Somers (13-1-1) — The Tuskers only played once last week, a 2-0 win over Panas, but Monday’s season-finale against Lakeland will have major implications. If Somers wins, it’ll lock up the No. 1 seed in Class A and a share of a league title. A loss would be costly. PR: 3

3. Pearl River (12-2-2) — With their regular season completed, it’s just a matter of patience for the Pirates. If Somers loses to Lakeland on Monday, Pearl River would be the beneficiary and likely get the top seed in Class A. Either way, Friday’s win over Tappan Zee gave the Pirates their fourth straight league title. PR: 5

4. Tappan Zee (11-3-1) — Friday’s loss to Pearl River cost the Dutchmen a league title, but that doesn’t make them any less dangerous for the playoffs. Sophomore Jorge Umana (14 goals, six assists) and senior Thomas Shalvey (seven goals, nine assists) have led a balanced and diverse attack. PR: 4

5. Byram Hills (11-2-2) — A league title will be decided when the Bobcats host Harrison on Monday, but there are loftier goals at the Hills. They’ve been behind the likes of Somers, Pearl River and TZ in the rankings for most of the season, but does anyone doubt that Byram has the goods to make a run in Class A? PR: 6

6. Arlington (10-5) — Who wants to see the Admirals in the playoffs? The answer is probably no one. It’s now seven wins in a row against Section 1 opponents, a stern reminder of why they’ve won three of the last four Class AA titles and should never be taken lightly. PR: 7

7. Hastings (13-1-1) — Last week was viewed as a chance for the Yellow Jackets to prove themselves against quality competition, and they sent a resounding message. Hastings beat Blind Brook, Yorktown and Bronxville by a combined score of 8-0, leaving no doubt that they’re among the best in Section 1, regardless of school size. PR: 10

8. Suffern (10-2-2) — The Mounties dominated their league this season, going 8-0-1 with one game to play. They’ve positioned themselves for a top-three seed in Class AA, led by a breakout season from Myles Solan (10 goals, 11 assists). PR: 8

9. Horace Greeley (11-4) — A season-sweep of Yorktown has earned the Quakers a league title and respect around the section. Their most recent win over the Huskers on Friday came in an eye-opening 4-0 rout, making it impossible not to move Greeley ahead of Yorktown. PR: Not ranked

10. Yorktown (10-4-1) — The Huskers are licking their wounds after going 0-2-1 in their last three games, which cost them the No. 1 ranking and a chance at the top seed in Class AA. The good news is that they’ll get a fresh start this week when the postseason begins, and Yorktown has made a habit of deep playoff runs. PR: 1

Week 6

1. Panas (11-0, last week: 1) — Panas won its host tournament, the Panther Invitational, for the second consecutive year Saturday. The Panthers beat a field that included four other lohud-ranked teams, going undefeated in the process.

2. Pawling (11-0, last week: 4) — A volleyball scout said a few weeks back that Pawling was the second-best overall team in the section. It appears he was right. The state-ranked Tigers are the only other undefeated team in the section and reached the semifinals Saturday.

3. Yorktown (13-1, last week: 2) — The Huskers topped a Zoe Staats-less Hen Hud team Thursday, then lost to the Sailors in a one-game playoff Saturday. I’ll take the four-set win over a one-game playoff. Yorktown has been spectacular all season, so having it plummet from that loss would be foolish.

4. Ossining (11-1, last week: 6) — The Pride have not won a section title since 2004, but that could change this year. Ossining spent most of its time in Class A over the last decade, but being back in Class AA — where it won 12 years ago — could be just what the team needed to break the streak. Ossining won the Pelham tournament Saturday, adding to its already impressive resume for the season.

5. Ursuline (10-2, last week: 3) — The Koalas’ two losses this year (New Rochelle, Pelham) have both come via a sweep, but they only lost by a total of 14 points over the course of those six sets. There is no clear-cut front-runner in Class AA this year, so Ursuline is very much in contention to win it all.

RANKINGS: Unbeaten Tappan Zee makes its debut in Top 10 (Week 4)

RANKINGS: League foes Rye, Ardsley debut in Top 10

6. Hen Hud (9-3, last week: 7) — An injury to one of the Sailors’ best players (Staats) could have been an irreparable blow to the team. Instead, Hen Hud battled for four sets with Yorktown on Thursday, reached the Panther Invitational quarterfinals Saturday (after beating Yorktown to get there), and nearly knocked off eventual finalist Smithtown East as a 7-seed. That grit is a testament to the culture Hall of Fame coach Diane Swertfager has created during her time in Montrose.

7. Nyack (12-1, last week: 5) — The Indians suffered their first loss of the season Thursday, falling to Tappan Zee in four grueling sets, 24-26, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23. Nyack had handed the Dutchies their first loss just one week prior. Nyack failed to qualify for the championship bracket Saturday, posting a 3-3 record in pool play after splitting with Minisink and getting swept by Yorktown.

8. Pelham (10-3, last week: 9) — The Pelicans are on a rampage right now, beating Eastchester, New Rochelle, Ursuline, and Rye over their last four matches.

9. Rye (8-4, last week: 8) — Weeks after beating Pelham in five sets, the Pelicans returned the favor to the Garnets. The loss snapped an eight-match winning streak by Rye, but is hardly enough to drop the Garnets out of the Top 10.

10. New Rochelle (9-4, last week: N/R) — The Huguenots make their Top 10 debut after a solid showing through the six weeks of the season that included wins over Ursuline and defending Class AA section champ Scarsdale. Three of New Rochelle’s losses have come at the hands of ranked teams (Ossining, Nyack, Pelham), and its fourth was against a team (Scarsdale) that was ranked at the time of the loss.

Dropped out: Ardsley (8-5, last week: 10)

On the bubble: Ardsley, Eastchester, North Rockland, Scarsdale, Tappan Zee

Yorktown forward Alyssa Francese gets a shot off against Haley Nemsick in the first half of a 3-2 win over Rye on Sunday at Yorktown High School.

YORKTOWN – Alyssa Francese rarely gets to experience the luxury of time and space.

And for good reason.

The senior forward had an opportunity to get creative in the closing minutes on Sunday night and promptly lifted Yorktown to a 3-2 win over Rye with her 31st goal of the season.

A little room to maneuver was the difference.

“I turned and got past the defender, looked up and shot the ball,” said Francese, who’s heading to Stony Brook next fall. “I like having time and space to do something facing the goal. It’s a lot easier to score.”

Garnets defender Haley Nemsick did a nice job of keeping Francese company, but was on the sideline with an injury when the winning goal was scored.

“I thought we were in a good spot after we scored to make it a 2-2 game,” Rye coach Rich Savage said. “We let our guard down there for just a minute and Francese is dangerous.”

Remi White had scored four minutes earlier to knot the score for the Garnets.

The Huskers spent more time on the ball from the beginning, but were in a 1-0 hole when Sarah DeGraw got loose for a breakaway goal three minutes in.

“After that one, everybody was like, ‘Wow. We need to step it up,’ ” Ivana Pjetri said. “I think it made us play harder.”

Francese got a shot off in traffic and made it a 1-1 game 20 minutes before halftime. Pjetri scored on a 25-yard blast that went off the hand of Rye goalie Hannah Friedrich eight minutes into the second half.

Player of the game: Francese kept the defense busy, finishing with two goals and one assist.

Turning point: After getting beat down the field and giving up the early goal, the Huskers picked up the pace and began to play more aggressively on the defensive end of the field.

Stat line: Ariana Pjetri got the assist on the first goal by Francese and Ivana Pjetri got the assist on the second goal by Francese. … Caroline Nachman made 10 saves for Yorktown. … Anna O’Keefe and DeGraw each had one assist for the Garnets. … Friedrich made seven saves.

Quotable: “I think we look really good,” said Francese, whose team closes out the regular season against Scarsdale and Somers. “We play well together once we get it going. It’ll be good to play competitive teams going into sectionals. It’ll get us ready for what we’re going to face next.”

Varsity Insider Week 7 Coach of the Week —

Tom Lynch, North Rockland: Of all the teams that advanced from last weekend’s qualifying round of the Section 1 playoffs, Lynch’s almost certainly faced the toughest opponent. Clarkstown North was one two-point conversion from entering the postseason 5-1 and on the strength of a five-game winning streak. Not only that, but it had been North Rockland that snapped that streak when it stopped the Rams short of the goal line to win in overtime, 35-34, the previous week.

As they had been most of the season, the Red Raiders were gashed on the ground that game, but Lynch’s defense provided a lot more resistance in the rematch. North Rockland forced three turnovers and proved to be especially strong in the shadow of its end zone. Afterward, Lynch said it was the best defensive performance by his team all season.

FOOTBALL: The Week 8 high school football schedule

Lynch also made a difficult decision prior to the game when he elevated sophomore Jeff Abrams to starting quarterback. That moved starter Dylan Senatore to wide receiver. Both players had a positive impact at their new positions and still have plenty of room to grow.

It’s been a transitional year for Lynch and his staff. The team is just 4-3, but it has integrated a four-receiver offense after so many years of being based primarily on a power running game. The Red Raiders have found some playmakers in Jayden Cook, Bradley Garland, Lamar Seward and others and could be poised to challenge top-seeded Arlington in Friday night’s quarterfinals.

Stepinac defeated Iona 42-34 in football action at Iona Prep in New Rochelle Sept. 17, 2016.

Varsity Insider Week 7 Player of the Week —

Mike Apostolopoulos, Iona Prep: On Saturday at Iona Prep, the Gaels dismantled a Fordham Prep team that entered the game at 4-1. Apostolopoulos was a major reason why. He was nearly flawless en route to a 70-20 home win. The senior quarterback went 19 for 22 for 357 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed for a score and helped the Gaels roll up 49 points by halftime.

The game was the highlight of what’s been a terrific senior season for the second-year starter. He has been one of the area’s most improved players and has thrived in new coach Joe Spagnolo’s offense.

After his big day on Saturday, Apostolopoulos is now 115 for 192 (59.9 percent) for 1,544 yards and 17 touchdowns in just six games.
